Students win enterprise awards
• By Matt Slaughter
CASHMERE HIGH School
students have won three regional
titles for their business as part of
the Young Enterprise Scheme.
The group made up of year 13
students Josh Dalley, Luisa Birkenhake,
Wayo Whyte and Riley
Flanagan have invented and
brought to market their product
called Pivot.
This is the world’s first instant
ice strapping tape. It is strapping
tape that goes ice-cold with the
addition of water.
The team have been recently
recognised by winning one of
two regional spots to compete
for Young Enterprise Scheme’s
Company of the Year award
in Wellington on December 4.
Winning this award would mean
Pivot would gain great exposure,
said its chief executive Josh Dalley.
Pivot also won the regional
excellence award for innovation
and the regional award for enterprising
technology.
Josh said winning these awards
made all of the hard work that
went into designing the product
pay off.
“It was absolutely fantastic, a
real honour, to be honest. I suppose
it’s when you work really
hard at something for a whole
year and it’s in a big group of
people, every once in a while a
fire sort of gets lit and we feed off
each other and we managed to
do something really amazing.”
He said the team hopes to
keep growing the Pivot brand
and some of its members are
planning to study business at
university, while others will
study engineering.
“We’re looking to move on and
expand and get a real manufacturer
on board hopefully and
we’ve got some big sales channels
and opportunities with some
celebrities actually for endorsement,
said Josh.
“We’re looking to go into the
medical industry, not just the
sporting industry.”
In 2018 there were over
250,000 sports-related ACC injury
claims. The top five injuries
were different types of sprains
which could have been treated
with the Pivot tape, said Josh.
Hillmorton’s
surprise
second
placing
• By Matt Slaughter
A TEAM of Hillmorton High
School students have come
second at Christchurch’s
Middle School Ethics
Olympiad competition.
Two teams of five Year 7, 8
and 9 students competed at the
event, which saw 18 teams from
12 schools go head to head to
present arguments and answer
questions on contentious ethical
cases on November 13.
They had to answer questions
about an ethical case involving
giving to charities and the effectiveness
of charities. They then
respond to arguments about
parents using tracking apps to
monitor children.
Hillmorton High School head
of English Andrea Hotter said
the students had been preparing
for the competition for about
three months and were not
expecting to come second.
“I think, to be honest, they
were quite surprised at how well
they obviously did and I think
the points were quite close across
a number of the teams, she said.
“We’re very proud of them.”
