Eco-friendly transport use on the rise
PEOPLE ARE using their cars less
and walking, biking or scooting
more, a survey has found.
The life in Christchurch
transport survey findings show
while travel by car is still the
most popular mode of transport
in the city, there has been an
increase in the use of alternative
ways to get around.
The survey questioned about
3500 Christchurch residents
about their travel habits and the
city’s transport network.
Said city council monitoring
and research team leader Kath
Jamieson: “The proportion of
people who say they are using
their car less now compared to
12 months ago is 27 per cent –
up from 19 per cent in 2018.”
More than 40 per cent of
respondents said they cycle more
often now than they did a year
ago while 21 per cent say they
walk more often.
Ms Jamieson said the arrival
of electric scooters in Christchurch
has also impacted the way
people move around the city.
“Nineteen per cent of
survey participants reported
that they have used a rental e-
scooter more than once a month
in the past 12 months, while
two per cent of those surveyed
said they own their own e-scooter
so it has become a popular
alternative form of transport,’’
ECO-FRIENDLY: The life in Christchurch transport survey has found more people are opting to
cycle, walk and scooter around the city.
Ms Jamieson said.
The number of people using
public transport has risen from
29 per cent in 2018, to 32 per
cent this year.
Ms Jamieson said the survey
showed the condition of roads
and footpaths are continuing to
trouble people.
“Fifty-one per cent of the people
surveyed said they were dissatisfied
or very dissatisfied with
the condition of Christchurch’s
roads. Ongoing patch repairs to
road, potholes and uneven road
surfaces are the main reasons
people gave for their dissatisfaction,’’
Ms Jamieson said.
The city council recently
revealed an investment case that
seeks $25-30 million funding to
improve the safety and condition
on more than 100 roads in
suburban areas of the city.
The areas proposed for
roading upgrades are New
Brighton, Richmond, Linwood,
Woolston, Spreydon, Somerfield,
Waltham, Beckenham and
Riccarton.
Estuary shellfish
collection signs
soon to go up
SIGNS STATING the daily limit
for shellfish collection in the Avon
Heathcote Estuary will soon be in
place.
Residents have been concerned
about groups or individuals taking
more than the recreational
limit of 150 per person as there are
currently no signs indicating the
rules.
However, Ministry for Primary
Industries director of fisheries
management Stuart Anderson said
signs will be put up in the estuary
in the next couple of months.
The impact of shellfish gathering
in the estuary on shellfish numbers,
birdlife, and human health
has been of growing concern for
its surrounding communities.
Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai
Trust chairman Kit Doudney
said a reduction to shellfish collection
limits in the estuary may
be the next step to improving its
health.
He will write to the Ministry for
Primary Industries to request the
daily recreational limit be lowered
from 150 to 25 per person.
It would take a minimum of one
year to lower the recreational daily
limits in the estuary, as the process
would include formal consultation
and the Government’s approval of
any changes.
