during holidays<br />

It might seem a quiet time of the year when everything grinds to a halt yet<br />

properties do sell over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.<br />

“Sales in the holiday period can be good,” says<br />

Ross Mitchell, manager of Harcourts Four Seasons in<br />

Lincoln.<br />

Property sales for December and January are always<br />

very good and just slightly behind other months.<br />

For the eight Harcourts Four Seasons offices across<br />

Canterbury, sales written up in January have been<br />

trending upwards over recent years with January <strong>2019</strong><br />

registering a slightly higher figure than for January<br />

2018, which was also above the figures for January<br />

2017.<br />

At this time of year most properties are looking<br />

their best making it a great time to sell. Ross also<br />

says there are always people looking to buy and the<br />

holiday period gives them time to research and view<br />

properties.<br />

“People go away on holiday and sit around and<br />

discuss their future plans. Mums and dads have more<br />

time to sit down and chat about what they want to<br />

do. It is not uncommon for them to come back from<br />

holiday and immediately put their plans into action.<br />

They start looking or put their house on the market,”<br />

explains Ross.<br />

With daylight saving there can be more time and<br />

energy both for looking at properties and keeping the<br />

one you are selling tidy.<br />

“I’ve personally written up contracts in the days<br />

between Christmas and New Year and all the agents<br />

at our branch have made a sale in the first week in<br />

January,” says Ross.<br />

Unlike other businesses, there are always real<br />

estate agents available over the Christmas and New<br />

Year period to help people looking to buy or sell a<br />

property. With cell phones and portable laptops,<br />

agents are accessible even when on holiday. Most<br />

check their phones and emails daily and respond<br />

promptly.<br />

If thinking of selling your property, why put it off<br />

at this time of year because you have the idea no one<br />

will be looking over Christmas and New Year. Ross<br />

says, many of their agents do not take an official<br />

holiday at this time of year, and there is still plenty of<br />

activity in the market.<br />

Serious buyers may be people wanting to get their<br />

children into a certain school zone or on transfer<br />

with their job. Lincoln University personnel on<br />

secondment may be looking for a home or people<br />

who have children who will be attending Lincoln<br />

University in the coming year might be aiming to<br />

relocate closer to the institution.<br />
