Preparing for Xmas
IT’S STARTING to look a
bit like Christmas
It was a busy weekend at
our place over the weekend,
ushering in Christmas
month.
This time of year is also
the start of kids’ birthday
season for us, thanks to
Vittoria being a January
baby.
Our first was on Saturday
and Vittoria was her
typical vivacious self, running
about and munching
on birthday treats.
She even managed to
borrow another friend’s
wooden bike as we were
leaving – I mean convincing
a toddler to give up a
toy when you have your
arms full is a tall order.
Later that night, Vittoria’s
godfather Codey
arrived from Australia for
a lightning fast whānau
visit and stayed with us for
the night.
Vittoria was fast asleep
by the time he arrived so
I waited until later in the
morning to take her into
the room and see him/
shock him awake in petty
retaliation for not doing
the dishes when we were
flatmates.
I had thought finding a
grown man asleep in her
room might have surprised
her at least a little, but
as soon as she saw it was

Codey she just lit up and
was happy to giggle and
babble away to him.
Watching the two of them
together while he was at
our place was awesome. She
hasn’t seen her godfather
since her first birthday, but
she was straight back into
playing with him like it had
only been a day or two.
The top game of the
morning? Riding the
borrowed bike through
Codey’s legs, hunting him
down if he wanted to stop
playing and eat.

With the fairly minimum
cost of the destruction
of the majority of our
collection of little drum
ornaments, we managed
to get it together in just
over an hour. It’s now sat
tantalisingly out of tackle
range, but not entirely
out of reach, on a set of
drawers.
The fact that I can’t see
Laura through it if we’re
watching TV is more likely
to see it moved than any
Vittoria-based issues.
Which is way better than
I expected.
Having said that, there’s
still plenty of month to go
until it’ll come down, so,
wish me luck.

Award for enterprising students
AN IDEA born on a sports
field sideline has won two
budding entrepreneurs a
top national award.
Wayo Whyte, of Lyttelton,
and Riley Flanagan,
of Governors Bay, are
two of four Cashmere
High School students to
bag Company of the Year
at the Young Enterprise
Scheme national competition.
The group of year 13 students,
which also includes
Josh Dalley and Luisa
Birkenhake, invented Pivot,
the world’s first instant
ice strapping tape.
By combining two sporting
necessities – strapping
tape and ice packs, the
students have developed
an instant ice-cold sports
strapping tape which will
enable athletes to ‘rest,
recover and return faster
than ever before’.
Their company was
awarded $3000, as well as a
$5000 scholarship for each
student to put towards
study through Massey
University Business
School.

secondary school students
first wowed judges in
October, coming second in

Last Wednesday they attended
the national finals
in Wellington and once
again impressed with their
innovation and entrepreneurship,
beating 20 other
regional champions.
Said Pivot marketing
manager Wayo: “Our idea
stemmed from a problem
we had all faced.
“United by our love of
sport we recognised an
inconvenience that had
plagued all of us at different
times – ice packs and
strapping tape just don’t
mix well and no one likes
sitting on the sidelines
watching their team play
while they’re waiting on an
ice pack to make a difference.”
With this idea in mind,
the students approached
their school’s chemistry
department.
“We wanted to create
a strapping tape with
a chemical embedded
within that goes cold with
the application of water.
We wanted our product to
be something you chose to
activate, and water was a
no brainer.”
Their product combines
the support of strapping
tape with the cooling of
an ice pack, allowing the
user to recover faster while
avoiding the immobility
caused by an ice pack.
