ANOTHER ATTEMPT is being
made make Lyttelton safer.
Vicki Tahau-Paton is trying
to expand the harbour’s
Neighbourhood Support group
to help ward off boy racers and
other offenders, which have been
of ongoing
concern for
residents.
The policealigned
organisation
aims
to create a
well-connected
community
which helps to
improve the
safety, resilience and well-being
of residents.
There are currently 14 out of
59 streets involved in Neighbourhood
Support in the harbour,
and 27 individuals.
To compare, in Parklands
there are 49 streets, consisting of
299 individuals and the Kirsten
Pl group has 78 households.
Ms Tahau-Paton said she
wants to get at least one person
from each street in Lyttelton on
board with the group.
It is one of several efforts
which residents have taken in
response to claims of a lack of
policing in and around Lyttelton.
SECURITY: An attempt is being made to lower crime in
Lyttelton.
Private security company
Tactical Response Team was
running free night patrols in
and around the harbour until
November 19.
However, director Shannon
Mudge shut them down as he
felt their resources were no
longer required.
Part of the reason was that
one of Community Patrols
of New Zealand’s vehicles
would soon be stationed in
Lyttelton – another attempt to
lower crime.
The patrol is currently seeking
volunteers.
People who join Neighbourhood
Support would receive
emails and alerts with news
from community partners,
including CPNZ and police.
They would also gain tips
and resources to improve their
household and neighbourhood
safety and learn how to be better
prepared for emergencies.
A “contact tree” would be
set up on participating streets,
which provides residents with a
‘Rest assured if a criminal
wants to go down a street
that’s got a neighbourhood
support sign and stickers
they better think again’
– Vicki Tahau-Paton
list of nearby occupants to call
or text during an event to notify
them it is happening.
“Rest assured if a criminal
wants to go down a street that’s
got a neighbourhood support
sign and stickers, they better
think again,” said Ms Tahau-
Paton.
Neighbourhood Support
regional manager Murray Mc-
Gusty said statistics show that in
areas with “effective neighbourhood
support groups, reported
crime rates were shown to be
substantially lower.”
Senior Sergeant Roy Appley
said police were supportive of
the action.
“It’s communities getting
involved in their own safety and
that’s always a good thing.”
Senior Sergeant Appley does
not think crime is any worse in
Lyttelton.
He said while there are issues
which happen from time to
time, particularly damage or
theft involving cars parked on
the road, incidents have not
increased.
Call for surfers
to wear
board leashes
endorsed
ENVIRONMENT Canterbury’s
deputy harbourmaster Guy Harris
has endorsed a call for surfers to
wear leashes on their boards this
summer.
It comes after a Bay Harbour
News article on November 20
about a head injury nine-year-old
Ryder Townshend received when
a surfer’s board came loose and
crashed down on him.
“It is part of the global ‘Surfers’
code’ and is mandatory in many
parts of the world. Whilst it is a
requirement of the Canterbury
Navigation and Safety Bylaw that
stand-up paddleboards wear a
leash whilst surfing, it currently
is not for surfers, as it is generally
felt that it’s so obviously a good
idea that it doesn’t need to be
explicitly stated.”
After nearly 40 years of surfing,
some of the most serious incidents
he has come across have been due
to surfboards hitting people.
“Leashes are cheap, hardly
noticeable when worn and have
practically zero effect on your
surfing – perhaps other than to
give you some confidence that
you won’t lose your board and
potentially ruin someone’s day –
or even their life.”
