A big shout out to volunteers
Port Hills
MP Ruth
Dyson writes
about the
hard work of
volunteers
in the
community
THE SURF patrols have started
on our beaches, the visits to
people living alone in their
homes continue, the hot, cooked
lunches are served in our local
churches, our fire brigade members
are alert – and hundreds
of other actions and activities
happen which keep our communities
and our residents safe
and happy.
Sometimes we take their presence
for granted. They are there
when we need them. But we
shouldn’t take them for granted.
They are volunteers who add
their service on top of their daily
lives. So to all those people –
patrolling our beaches watching
out for swimmers who get into
bother, our Lyttelton Community
House team, St Johns and
Linwood Ave Union church who
provide meals for so many people,
Lyttelton and Sumner Fire
Brigades, Age Concern visitors,
Sumner Bays volunteers and so
many others – thank you.
Some countries don’t have the
culture and spirit of volunteering
that we have in New Zealand.
It’s part of our DNA and
one that we should appreciate
and nurture. These volunteers
give up a lot of their leisure and
family time so that our residents
have a better life. That’s pretty
special.
So heading into the Christmas
and New Year period which is
often a time of reflection on the
year past and the year ahead,
let’s all take a moment
to acknowledge and thank
those who make our place a
great one to live and play in –
people who go the extra mile for
others. They give us a gift that
tops most Christmas presents
BRAVE:
Volunteer fire
brigades deal
with all types
of callouts,
including
motor vehicle
accidents, fires
and medical
rescues.
and they don’t do it for thanks
or glory. But they deserve
both.
These volunteers are a big part
of why we have such special and
strong communities. I hope that
their summer is not all work
and that they also get some time
to spend in the sun with their
families.
