Playhouse winner ecstatic<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> Lions have delivered their annual playhouseraffle<br />

prize and the winner couldn’t be happier.<br />

The giant playhouse was won by <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

resident Judy Mitchell and is an early Christmas<br />

present for her extended family.<br />

Mrs Mitchell said she had bought playhouse raffle<br />

tickets for many years, always hoping she might win.<br />

‘‘I was over the moon when they told methe news<br />

I’d won and Iknew straight away where I’d put it.<br />

‘‘It will get plenty of use, including from my<br />

granddaughter who is special needs and will use it for<br />

abit of ‘time out’,’’<br />

The playhouse was built by Lions president Roger<br />

Paterson and has been afundraiser for 18 years.<br />

Netball stalwarts honoured<br />

Two Mid Canterbury<br />

women who have encouraged<br />

hundreds of netball<br />

players and umpires were<br />

made life members of<br />

Mid Canterbury Netball<br />

last week.<br />

Volunteers Natalie<br />

Bateman and Jan Lee<br />

were both made life<br />

members at the organisation’s<br />

AGM. Mrs Bateman<br />

has given 20 years to<br />

the sport while Mrs Lee<br />

has been umpiring since<br />

2004.<br />

Both women were presented<br />

with their awards<br />

by Mid Canterbury Netball<br />

president Audrey<br />

Leath.<br />

Mrs Bateman has coached<br />

club and representative<br />

teams and<br />

taken netball into<br />

schools.<br />

She was on the Mid<br />

Canterbury Netball junior<br />

committee, coaching<br />

committee, competition<br />

committee and was coaching<br />

convener. She has<br />

spent many hours courtside,<br />

helping players and<br />

teams and administrating<br />

the sport.<br />

She is currently secretary<br />

for the Hampstead<br />

Netball Club and was the<br />

club’s coach of the year<br />

Mrs Lee passed her<br />

Netball New Zealand<br />

Part A theory with the<br />

highest mark in the country<br />

in 2004 and the following<br />

year gained her<br />

regional qualifying<br />

umpire practical exam.<br />

Since then she has<br />

umpired at senior and<br />

representative level, coached<br />

and tested fellow<br />

umpires, generally helping<br />

to train new umpires<br />

and upskill others.<br />

Community trust grants<br />

In its latest funding round the Community<br />

Trust of Mid &South Canterbury has<br />

approved grants totalling $626,056 to25<br />

organisations from around the region<br />

supporting a range of outcomes for<br />

health, community, education, welfare<br />

and recreational groups.<br />

Locally, Community House Mid Canterbury<br />

receives $14,290 for anew air<br />

conditioning system and Hakatere Ceramics<br />

&Pottery group receives $17,000<br />

towards anew potter’s wheel and other<br />

equipment.<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> Golf Club gets $5,500 for<br />

clubhouse heating, Rakaia Golf Club<br />

$5,000 towards anew mower amd there<br />

is also $7500 for Hakatere Multicultural<br />

Council.<br />
