Technology has played a leader’s role in transforming the

business platform across the globe and today its the

abundance of countless technologies that have made

traditional sectors like logistics to take the big shift. There

is a need to integrate the air cargo infrastructure.

Automation of the business processes paves path to achieve

the agility and scalability required to compete with time,

thereby increasing productivity, driving revenue growth and

breaking through the confinements of stereotypes. Business

automation is an essential component of the modern

enterprise in the contemporary era.

In this era of superlative automation, where services and

real-time information require only a touchscreen or a few

clicks, manual feeding of information and checking

shipment status on phone or e-mails looks primitive.

Technologies including big data, AI, Machine Learning

have the potential to make the air freight forwarding

cheaper, safer and simpler. While automation requires a

significant investment, the advantages far outweigh the

costs. Team LogYcode believes it is easy incorporation for

the logistics industry to provide specific and real-time piece

level information of cargo, with the technology already in

place. The RFID solution for tracking shipments at the

piece level renders the information to the logistics service

providers to improve their operational efficiency apart from

THE JOURNEY OF THE

LOGISTICS

INDUSTRY

IN INDIA

deally the concept of logistics needing

Itransport of goods took off when the place

of production shifted miles away from the

place of consumption. This wasn’t the case till

the time India was a country of villages with

everything being produced and consumed

within the village itself. With the need to grow

came the need to expand both markets and

production. Coupled to this was the fact that

production itself had grown much larger in size

and had to be moved from being created in

home-factories to factories/ production centres

in dedicated industrial areas.

This brought in the need for transport starting

with small vehicles including bullock-carts,

cycle-rickshaws, handcarts to motorised

transport vehicle which could be a threewheeled

small carrier to a multi-axle, multitonnage

trucks and rigs.

In India the journey of pure transport of goods

without the need for warehousing and godowns

started in the pre-independence days

18

November 2019|

New age of logistics Industry

with the likes of Human-pulled rickshaws, Cycle rickshaws,

Bullock carts/Horse carriages etc being the standard ware within

the city and across small distances between tows. Of these today

only the cycle rickshaws are still around, and given their nonpolluting

nature, could pull along for quite some time. The other

two being laborious to animal and human, have either been banned

completely or substantially.

As for transport between cities of items like cotton, farm produce

etc., the main source of transport were the railways given our

British masters preferred to give prominence to railways than to

road transport. From the hinterlands, cotton and farm produce

would be hauled by animal transport to the nearest railways

station/ yard and then loaded onto the train for further journey

mostly up to bigger commercial destinations like Delhi, Mumbai

and Chennai (then Madras). As for transport between cities, they

were pitiably negligible given that India in those times was an outand-out

agrarian subsistence economy with villages taking care of

themselves. Roads did exist but for very short distances like

Mumbai to Pune. For longer distances like Mumbai to Delhi &

Madras, there was hardly any user with roads being used to

transport stuff for the Britishers outside the country.

Independence brought change! And what change! In the name of a

road only remnants of the GT road (from Chittagong in

Bangladesh to Kabul in Afghanistan!) existed. Subsequently newer

roads connecting all the state capitals to Delhi and Mumbai took

| November 2019 19

place which in the recent years have all been bifurcated

into 4-laned one-way roads with talks of most being

converted to 6-8 lane expressways with speeds in excess

of 100 kms an hour.

With roads came vehilces, especially trucks. From the

time of independence into the 70s, there were three main

truck manufacturers, namely Tatas with their tie-up with

Mercedes, Ashok Leyland, an off-shoot of British

Leyland, Firodias of Pune with their brand Bajaj-Tempo,

Standard Motors of Chennai to name a few. These

companies and subsequent ones in that era bought dated

foreign technologies complete with their dies, casts and

drawings and made them in India for the Indian users.

It was the opening up of the economy in 1991 which

finally brought much-needed change with companies

existing and new doing a complete rejig of their models

to suit Indian needs. Tata’s came out with their own

series of trucks right from 9 MTs capacity to 24 to even

40 MTs multiaxles. Not to be outdone, AL too tied up

with Iveco and Hino for new tech and engines

respectively and has been giving India some of its best

and most powerful of machines. In time, newer

companies like AMW, Volvo and Scania too entered the

scene. Not to be left out, LCV makers like M & M and

Eicher too are in the truck and LCV fray. Today the

transport part of the logistics industry in India is full of

vehicles which fill practically every need in every weight

scale from a few kgs to a upto +50 MTs! And this isn’t

changing anytime soon given that roads are improving

with better and bigger ones being planned and

constructed.

If you thought the Indian logistics industry was all road

transport, you shouldn’t be excused! With the concept of

subsistence production be it of industry and agriculture

being all but dead, India is today the largest producer of

fruits, veggies, milk and eggs. And we aren’t even

talking about stuff made in factories across the country!

All this calls for a proper supply chain which itself

changes with what is being handled. Farm produce and

meats obviously need a separate category of handling as

compared to furniture, clothes and machinery including

automotive like cars and bikes. For these came a new

paradigm, the warehouse!

What was earliest four walls, a dirt floor and corrugated

sheets for a ceiling with even ten thousand feel of

covered area considered big, has undergone a sea

change! Temperature controlled, dust and vermin free

with each with a capacity close to 1 million (10 lacs) sq

ft, this is one serious business one really wants to be in

and create the right impression. In India, warehousing,

the other element of the Logistics trade came about in

the end of 90s when business in general stated to

increase exponentially along with trading, packing and

repacking of goods before sale. At that point of time, it

was the old-faithful-turn-new-bride go-down to

warehouse which worked simply because nothing else

seemed to work.

With the departing of the previous millenia, the old too

started to die-out with logistics companies like

Singapore’s Sembawang, APL Logistics and clutch of

export-oriented warehouse operators making thei

presence felt with large warehouses which had

seemingly better facilities than most Indian homes! With

them arriving, the industry sat up and took notice. What

was till then facility only meant for export shipments

was being demanded for local movements as well!

What really brought the biggest change in logistics in

India was a system of transaction which depended

completely on the mix of warehousing and transport to

survive and never had its own shops, showrooms and

storage. No prices for guessing this one! It was the

digital-age revolution called e-commerce front-ended by

foreign and Indian entities including Amazon, Flipkart,

Snapdeal, Paytm to name the top ones. With the promise

to bring you anything from an ant to an elephant, their

logistics set-up is like none that the world has ever seen

with entire warehouses of a few million sq feet being

constructed at regular intervals (in the absence of the

silly city-specific octroi tax and advent of GST instead!)

to facilitate movement of goods ordered online. Add to

this the need for transport from as small as a bike to as

big as one to haul a 45’ closed-bodied container!

And this, dear readers isn’t the end of the Logistics

journey. With India still to make an indelible impression

in the road and rail infrastructure and talks to include

varied other mode of logistics including inland

waterways, coastal shipping, use of de dirigible being

talked about, India is staring at the cusp of another great,

great revolution in the logistics industry which promises

to be as interesting as that which has happened till now!

potency differentiates Jay Storage from its competitors

and helps it in being future-ready. Altogether, from the

conventional racking to the futuristic Automated storage

solutions, Jay Storage is committed to providing it all,

under a single roof.

Why Choose Jay Storage?

The knacks to stay committed to deliver the best and

keep up with the changing times & customer demands

help the company in outshining its competitors. Its pool

of dedicated sales, production and installation

professionals keep no stone unturned in satisfying

present and engaging new customers with complete

determination.

The Company’s Take on Technology

We are in the disruptive technology age, and with the

onset of Industry 4.0, technology is already changing the

face of warehousing. Many companies are now using

automated storage solutions in warehouses like ASRS

and Shuttles. With the help of technology, overall

throughput time is getting reduced and picking

operations are becoming almost error-free & efficient

than before. With WMS software, AI and ML

capabilities, customers now get live access and real-time

information of their storage conditions, materials flow,

and other details.

The Big Picture

“It is more of a science about how, and where you store

material, how fast can it be retrieved, and how efficiently

can it be delivered. And we know this better,” states team

Jay Storage.

Technology is changing the way organizations do

business. But, when it comes to storage automation and

retrieval processes, the racking has to be more stable and

rigid. As warehouse users shift their focus to productivity

and throughput, racking will continue to move at the

forefront. Considering this, the company has started

moving from 8 meters to 12 meters and is now looking

to go higher. It believes that as it will go higher, it will

require more stability to outshine its competitors. It has

identified that warehouses will need narrow aisle

equipment, articulated forklifts as standard basic

equipment to effectively deal with the height. Also, these

equipment require very stringent stability and tolerances

during installation and if not designed and erected right,

it can cause a major disaster.

A Futuristic Approach

Jay Storage believes that the future will witness

automated storage solutions and retrieval market ruling

the businesses. The Indian trade segment will shift to

million square feet taller warehouse designs in the

coming times. Investing in robust R&D centres would

become more crucial as the industries are all set to move

from unorganized to organized. And, the company is all

set to tap this change and be a change-maker.

Overtime Management

Software Adding Comfort in Corporates

Asimple definition to understand overtime can be, “the extra time consumed by an employee apart from the

agreed working hours”.

Every organization has different shift formats subjected to working hours, conditions & locations.as per the guidelines 8 to 9

hours of work is permitted, to work above this is considered as overtime.as the word “overtime” clearly suggests the extra

time arranged for work apart from the defined working hours. Overtime is practiced in almost every organization linking it

directly to the completion of a project, asssignment, event or a process within a given deadline. overtime can be performed by

an individual or a team. there are different formats & arrangments for overtime where not only extra hours needs to be

devoted after the fixed work shift timings but HR’s have modified the procedure with which you can dedicate your week off's

34

November 2019|

Embracing Technology to the Core

timings in the office as well counting it under the extra

timings or authentically calling it, overtime.

WHY IT REMAINS A COMPLEX ISSUE:

To practice overtime is costly for a company in both human

and monetary terms. It can be directly associated with

increased productivity but low work – family life balance.

Apart from this calculating overtime can be the biggest

nightmare for Human Resource as it can be a lengthy and

tricky process. Some other major reasons causing overtime

a complicated affair are:

Different formats and trends in overtime.

Overtime distribution amongst the employees.

Daily/weekly/Monthly overtime review and

calculation.

Multi level and multi location overtime database

and its calculation.

Setting minimum and maximum overtime policies.

Creating and modifying overtime guidlines and

sycnhronizing it with the database.

Performance Management.

Apart from it, an H.R needs to perform their fundamental

and most important duty, to motivate an employee and to

take care of their well being.

WHAT H.R DREAM ABOUT OVERTIME

MANAGEMENT:

On questioning the H.R about what they think or desire in

an overtime management software to help them in

calculating overtime, they told us about their issues to be

taken care off which started as:

A software which can handle lengthy overtime

data which may also contain variations in it.

Duplicate entries to be checked and avoided.

Multiple user log ins.

Multi level approval/rejection option.

Daily/weekly overtime review for H.R.

Regular/irregular data fixation.

Calculation

factors for weekly off beyond regular time.

Vacation additional time hour’s effects.

Should be able to process overtime data of 24x7

work environment and 12 hours rotational shift

processes.

Synchronized overtime data from multi

level/multiple locations.

Other type of associated data processing like

laboured hours, excursion hours, overtime hours.

For overtime management software to work aptly, correct

and complete data should reach the overtime software and

this process gets initiated from the biometric attendance

machines and access control systems. Data Capture

software plays the role to transfer all the raw data from the

machine into the software which further gets processed into

Time Office software to get synchronized working hours

data and overtime hours data separately. After when this

data gets transferred to overtime management software,

extra hours calculation gets completed giving the complete

work duration for the employees.

DOING JUSTICE WITH H.R - OVERTIME

MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE:

While a review call, one of the Human Resource

department from an organization described how Overtime

management system has helped their company to save time

and money in overtime alteration. One of the most value

added feature they got is handling the Multi Location

Overtime Trouble. Further explanation described that there

company has got offices at various locations and overtime

remains functional the whole month. all the supervisors of

different locations sends the final overtime data of their

employees to the head office from where the admin

approves or disapproves the former requests and send it

back to their respective locations.

Secondly the associated data like time, attendance &

overtime of employees are monitored & measured by the

supervisors & only former is authorized for data and its

measuring which adds the advantage of multi level data

checking and approval. They also added that it has helped

them in reducing the paper consumption due to online

report generation, checking and approval.

It is not mandatory to work overtime just to calculate the

overtime. Your smart research for Indigenous manufacturers

and developers, value added features, value for money,

round the clock technical support can help you in opting a

valuable and effective Overtime Management Software.
