BIRDS OF THE ESTUARY
Tanya Jenkins is the manager of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust,
a non-profit organisation formed in 2002 to protect one of New Zealand’s
most important coastal wetlands. Each week she introduces a new bird
found in the estuary. Her column aims to raise the understanding of the
values and uniqueness of the area.
THE COLOURFUL little kingfisher
are found at several sites around our
estuary.
They prefer to perch rather
than walk on the ground on mudflats.
You will see them on rocks,
logs, jetties and even washing
lines.
They eat insects, lizards and mice
but mainly crabs which they return
to their perch where they batter the
legs off before swallowing the main
body.
Pellets of indigestible remains are
regurgitated and you will see these,
together with piles of crab legs on
and near rocks when you walk along
the South New Brighton jetty, which
is a favourite dinner table for these
birds.
They may be a small bird but are
absolutely fearlessly aggressive when
protecting chicks and will attack
other birds coming too close and
even dive-bomb mammals such as
cats and dogs.
They nest inside trees and sand
cliffs where they repeatedly fly at the
site and slowly chisel out materials
till they have created a safe hole for
laying eggs.
How can we help these, and all
other birds? Keep dogs on the lead
when walking near the estuary and
pick up litter!
COLOURFUL: The kingfisher is often seen perching
around South New Brighton looking for its favourite
food - crabs.
