Your health in focus 2014 It’s all about ‘face time’ Behind the scenes with Anthony Westmoreland and his pharmacy practice Story // Abby Laub You wouldn’t expect a pharmacy business owner to tout the benefts of skipping a prescription, but Westmoreland Pharmacy and Compounding owner Anthony Westmoreland does just that. “We’ll go out and sit down with a patient and talk to them about their disease state and what sort of vitamins they should start taking to help,” he said. “Because not every answer is a prescription. Unfortunately in our society, you go to the doctor with something wrong and get a pill. We are trying to focus more on wellness and prevention, or maybe it’s a gel or powder, not a pill. Maybe it’s a behavior. The bottom line to what we do is just face time.” Westmoreland worked for 15 years locally with Walgreens and decided to open his business in 2006, starting from zero. Westmoreland Pharmacy now has locations in Jefersonville and New Albany. The key to success, he said, is personal attention and “going the extra mile. It’s not uncommon for us to encounter a patient who has a high copay and we’re digging around for a coupon to help lower that copay. We’ll talk to the patient about what can be used to save them money.” Westmoreland is a hybrid — both a regular pharmacy and a compounding service, which ofers more individualized treatment. Pharmacy compounding is the preparation of personalized medications for patients. Compounds are both a science and an art and are custom made for every patient, “from scratch,” so to speak. On the compounding side, the business deals a good deal with the anti-aging movement. “It relates well to compounding because it’s all about individualization,” Westmoreland said. “Hormone replacement is huge, trying to restore your hormones to a more youthful time.” He added that they also do a lot of vitamins and herbs for their hormone patients. Westmoreland also sees a lot of weight loss and wellness patients. “We’ve done lots of HCG diet, which is kind of controversial,” he said. HCG is a pregnancy hormone that is theorized to put extra energy into the bloodstream, allowing patients to consume fewer calories, he explained. We develop relationships with them and we get to see the fruits of our labor.” -Anthony Westmoreland “You need to be getting your energy from somewhere else, so it’s theorized that HCG does that,” Westmoreland said. “We’ve seen a lot of good success with that. People start establishing diferent habits and diferent things they’re eating, so hopefully they can maintain it and integrate those healthy foods.” Westmoreland also creates individualized multivitamins for any specifc issue or prevention concern. “We don’t tell people to get a Centrum and be done with it,” he quipped. In this part of the country a common vitamin that everyone should take, Westmoreland said, is Vitamin D. “As a whole the population is indoors and looks at screens and don’t get the sunlight we need, so Vitamin D almost always gets recommended to people,” he said. “In the Ohio valley there seems to be a higher prevalence of respiratory problems, so we might recommend some vitamin C to keep their immune system in tip-top shape. Echinacea also is great to help fght of infections.” Aside from helping with medicine, Westmoreland said he likes to assist with the fnancial side of treatments.
He cited a patient who was going to have to pay $3,000 for his ongoing therapy due to the health insurance law changes. “We talked about what we can do and it turned out we had some ideas for him to tweak his therapy a little bit, compound it and make it potentially even better, and in the end a lot less expensive,” Westmoreland said. It is developing relationships that lead to successful solutions like these that he enjoys so much about his work. “I know the vast majority of our customers,” he said. “We know them and we want to know them. We develop relationships with them and we get to see the fruits of our labor. We get to hear their success stories.” And they work directly with doctors to fgure out the best solutions for patients. “We’re acting as a part of the healthcare team,” Westmoreland said, adding that sometimes that means coming up with creative ways for kids to take medicine — such as in juices — rather than huge pills or capsules. • For more information visit wwwwestmorelandpharmacy.com or call 812-944-6500 or 812-284-6500.
