A walk in the garden // Bob Hill The guide to planting from seed Of all the hundreds of plants that cover the eight acres of the Hidden Hill Nursery & Sculpture Garden landscape none draws as much attention as the Mexican Sunfower, or Tithonia rotundifolia to you Latin lovers. It ofers dozens of brilliant orange fowers on a four-to-six-foot bush. It’s an absolute butterfy magnet; a much better draw than the vaunted butterfy bush, sage or yarrow. It’s not unusual to see a dozen happy butterfies fitting about the vibrant orange fowers as human spectators gather in full appreciation. The sunfower’s downside, of sorts, is that it’s an annual. You’re rarely going to fnd it in nurseries — although we do carry it — and once you see it in full bloom it’s generally too late in the growing season to plant it. The solution: Start the Mexican Sunfower indoors from seed. It’s easier than you might think, will save you money in the long run and ofers a great solution to late winter doldrums. While you’re at it, start all sorts of other annuals and tomatoes. If you can get the kids or grandkids involved they might even get over the notion that tomatoes come from the grocery store. Finding the seeds is the easy part. If your mailman hasn’t developed a hernia hauling garden catalogs to the house you can just go online and have a few million more options. One of my favorite sites is Seed Savers Exchange (www.seedsavers. org), a non-proft organization that saves and distributes hundreds of varieties of heirloom seeds and the stories that come with them. One would be its ‘Outhouse Hollyhock,’ a fower that graced Iowa outhouses for years so that refned ladies-in-need would not have to ask where the facility was located. Then there’s the ‘Mortgage Lifter’ tomato; a plant so productive it paid of the farmer’s mortgage. Beginners are better of starting with just a few fowers or tomatoes. There’s usually from 25 to 250 seeds in a package and you don’t want to get into the truck farming business. You might hang on to the extra seeds and sow them outside directly into the ground after our last frost date, which is usually early May. I’ve never had much luck saving seeds from year-to-year and planting outdoors helps remove some of the guilt from just tossing them away. Begin the indoor planting process with a sterile potting soil mix. If you have some old cell-packs or three-to-four inch pots left from last year start the seeds in them. You might also invest in a seed starter kit which includes plant-starting containers, a plastic lid to hold in the humidity and a water-proof tray. There are 72-plant kits available for about $25. Another optional consideration is a “heat mat” to place under your containers which will help with the germination and growth. That’s another $40 or so, but keep in mind the cost of 72 garden-fresh annuals and/or tomato plants and you can use the kit and mat for many years. Timing really is everything in the seedstarting business. Most seeds will germinate in seven to 14 days and will be ready to transplant outside in six to eight weeks. That means, depending on the plant, you’ll want to start them indoors in early to mid-March. Begin any sooner and you’ll have a lot of unhappy, rootbound plants on your hands. Read the package labels. Annuals like zinnias are much more aggressive than tomatoes. Plant the seeds in the moistened soil mix. If you don’t use a starter kit create a clear plastic tent over the seeds as their Mother Ship. Once the seeds have germinated and are headed toward adolescence you can remove the plastic. Light is the next big factor. If you are lucky enough to have a big sunny window you can start and grow the plants in it, but be sure to rotate the plants daily; they always lean toward light. You can use a grow light but they are expensive. For beginner purposes a fuorescent light on S-hooks and continually raised three to four inches above the plants will be fne. The plants will grow well in 60 to 70 degree room temperatures. Keep the soil moist but not wet. Talk to the plants daily; I always do. Keep the kids or grandkids fully involved. Remind them how that tiny little seed grew to six feet of orange fowers in just a few months.
