“Infrastructure is huge,” she said.
“Sidewalks and bike lanes just cost money
and nobody has a lot of that right now.
But there are grants if people do have
enough initiative and there is enough
community support.”
As far as individual families go, pendulums
need to swing. She is hopeful
that many families
will start with the 5 a
increased education
and motivation from
the community. She
cited a similar initiative
in the area in the
1990’s that focused on
diabetes, teen pregnancy
and childhood
safety and that particularly
in the area of diabetes, numbers
were better as a result and the Joslin Diabetes
Center was birthed.
Carroll also noted that Clark County is
doing something similar with their Growing
Healthy Lives and that public projects
like the Ohio River Greenway were adding
to the excitement of getting outdoors
and getting physically active.
“It would be neat to see the whole community
have a passion for their health
and paving the way for future generations,”
she said. “They would get out
of survival mode and take a moment to
look at their health seriously and then do
something about it for our health and our
kids.”
She sees the Healthier Community Initiative
as an encouragement
and a means
to get the ball rolling,
especially in a crucial
time when the public’s
health continues
to deteriorate. Eventually
she hopes to see
an active community
calendar with a collection
of materials
and healthy events.
She hopes to see more
groups like the New
Albany Track Club (a group of more than
500 local elementary age children that
run in meets) spring up, and more people
getting involved in existing projects and
events. •
