He has the Olympics to work towards, he has changed his studies to a sports-related qualification and he has gained more personal confidence than he thought was possible. Fivet, a Strowan resident, trains twice a day, and balances his passion for judo with his bachelor of sport coaching majoring in sports science studies at the Canterbury University and has a job at UC’s Recreation Centre. The training has paid off, with national titles in the junior men’s category in 2017 and • By Jacob Page BROTHERS ZACH and Seb May were able to turn heads at the North Island age-group golf championships. Zach, 17, finished runner-up in the under-19 field at the Hamilton Golf Club, while Seb, 14, managed third in the under-16 category. The duo live in Fendalton. Zach said the result was reward for the work he had done on his game after a challenging 2019. He was the co-leader heading into the final round but could not hold-off Miramar’s Sam Masters in the final round. Zach finished at +3, two shots behind Sam. “I was pleased with the week I had, last year was tough for me, the first six months was a struggle with the way I was playing and I worked really hard at it so it’s nice to see the results coming from that,” he said. “My driving off the tee was my issue, it became a mental thing for me, I could go out onto the driving range and hit quality drives time-after-time but then I’d play a round and it would all fall apart – I’d get the yips really. “The positive thing is that my short game has got better because I’ve become used to playing in positions on the course that are tricky,” he said. Seb was the outright leader heading into the final round of the under-16 tournament before a 77 saw him finish at +7, eight shots behind the winner, Ryan Rooney from Fielding. “I thought it was a pretty good week against some tough golfers,” he said. “I haven’t played much in the North Island because I have had a wrist injury but it was good to get the opportunity and backing TALENTED DUO: Brothers Zach (left), and Seb May both had top-three finishes at the North Island agegroup golf champs in Hamilton. my ability.” Neither of their parents played golf but they Zach was taken to Russley’s junior golf clinics at the age of five and Seb followed. Their sister, Maddie, 15, also plays golf and has represented Canterbury. Zach said his next focus would be the Canterbury strokeplay this weekend at Harewood Golf Club then the South Island strokeplay in Dunedin in a fortnight. Seb will switch his focus to cricket for the short-term. Judo provides new life direction Lorcan Fivet 2018, a world ranking of 13 in June last year, and a first senior men national title in 2019. The 20-year-old travelled to Brazil recently for an intensive training opportunity. The training will take place for three months before he competes in Argentina, Peru and Chile, as part of a dream to compete at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Fivet has his sights set on the 2024 Olympics and that means full-time training for the next four years. “I want to take it as far as possible,” he said. He has been passionate about judo since he first tried it five years ago. “I tried it and loved it. After the first year I was competing and training 12 times a week. I went through the grades to black belt.” He teaches the three to 10 year-old class at his club, Premier Equipe Judo, and “would definitely recommend judo, especially for young kids.” Along with fitness, coordination, discipline and coaching skills, judo has given Fivet another important life lesson. “I used to be extremely introverted; I hated any kind of social interaction. My first two or three years of judo I would stay at the back, in the shadows, and avoid attention. Ever since I started judo, my parents and coach said the same thing, that it takes you out of your shell and gives you so much confidence.” MOMENT: Speed skater Ethan De Rose has earned a bronze medal at the Youth Winter Olympics in Switzerland. Team bronze for De Rose at Youth Winter Olympics SPEED SKATER Ethan De Rose led the charge for New Zealand with a bronze medal on the final day of competition at the Youth Winter Olympic Games at Lausanne, Switzerland, last week. Competing in a mixed nation team, De Rose, who finished year 13 at Shirley Boys’ High School last year, looked confident throughout the knock-out rounds, as his team advanced to the bronze medal final in the mixed team relay. He said the result exceeded his own expectations. “We all skated really well today and we’re so happy to come away with a bronze medal. This was a huge highlight, I definitely didn’t think I’d end up with a medal so I’m super stoked.” De Rose combined with Italian Thomas Nadalini, Korean Min Seo and Great Britain’s Olivia Weedon for the medal. Earlier in the event the 17-year-old placed seventh in the 1000m individual event and 10th in the individual 500m. De Rose began speed skating at four-years-old, after his mother saw an advert in a newsletter. Since then de Rose has been obsessed, thinking of little else ACHIEVEMENT: Ethan De Rose made the most of his time on the international stage. outside of skating. “I just had a thing for it ever since I started and was constantly wanting to go back,” he said when he made the Olympic team back in November. “At the start it was more casual until I was about eight then I started competing in Australia and that made me want to progress and be competitive. “It’s so tense and so strategic and you’ve just got to give it everything you’ve got, I love it.”
