She painted and drew from when she was old enough to hold a pencil or brush. As a child she would watch the trees and sky through the schoolroom window when she should have been listening to the teacher. The rolling hills and countryside coloured her childhood in England, where she often spent time rescuing and nurturing birds that had fallen out of nests or had broken wings. Aged eight she saw Cornwall for the first time – the cliffs, the sea, the wheeling gulls took her breath away. Janie attended art school extramurally while still at high school. When she came with him to his home she fell in love again, this time with the taonga of New Zealand, the ocean, the native birds, the mountains and the wilderness. About twenty years ago her friend Galina Kim who was an art mentor to Janie encouraged her to start using a palette knife. She never looked back. Janie studied at the University of Fine Arts in Vietnam in 2005 and there she fused her use of palette knife and love of NZ landscape with layers and layers of pigment and lacquer. Now she lives on Banks Peninsula/ Horomaka and spends her days absorbing and painting the wonder and beauty of her surroundings. Observing and reflecting. Sea and birds and land. Walking, exploring, wondering at its beauty. Celebrating once again the incredible work of our conservationists. PEGASUS POST Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Tuesday January 28 2020 3 News Resident fed up with street repairs • By Matt Slaughter CRYSTAL TANNER is sick of waiting for the kerbs and cycleway on Sheldon St, Woolston, to be constructed to the right standard. These parts of the street were ripped up and concreted once in 2018 but the job was not carried out to the correct standard, so now this work is taking place again. Mrs Tanner said the repairs were originally supposed to take three months but instead took nine. Higgins Contractors Ltd was employed by the city council to complete this job. Due to the quality of concrete it used being below the required strength standard on its first attempt, it is managing and paying for this work to be re-done with stronger concrete. Said city council head of transport Richard Osborne: “The concrete on a large portion of Sheldon St did not meet the strength requirement. As a result a strip of the roadway approximately 500mm wide adjacent to the kerbs has been dug up as part of the repair works. Said Mrs Tanner: “The overall inconvenience is that you’ve got the noise, you’ve got the dust and you’ve got the people [workers] out there, so you don’t feel like you can use the front of your street, you don’t feel like you can go out there. “It’s the lack of accessibility, it’s the lack of safety for others,” she said.
