PASSAU TO SCHLÖGEN
// FROM THE BAVARIAN VENICE TO THE GIANT OF THE DANUBE
The THREE_RIVER_CITY Passau, situated at the
confluence of Danube, Inn and Ilz, gives you a grand
kick-off to a wonderful bicycle tour. Take your time
and discover the sights of the »Bavarian Venice«:
Explore the baroque old town, which was given a
Mediterranean imprint by its Italian constructors. Or
take a look at the residence of the prince-bishop,
which hosts the »Museum am Dom«. Additionally,
Passaus St. Stephen’s Cathedral is definitely worth
a visit and is situated directly at the route you are taking.
In there, you will find the largest organ that has
ever been made for a cathedral, consisting of nearly
18,000 pipes. And, following your route, you will find
the glass museum, hosting an exhibition of more
than 15,000 objects made out of Bohemian Glass.
And all this is only the start of this diversified stage.
The view of the fortress Krämpelstein, laying
high above the Danube on a rock, is more than
thrilling. Legend says that here, on the »Schneiderrössl«,
a tailor fell and died when he was about to
bury his goat in the Danube.
Just as exhilarating are the gothic mural paintings
in St. Pete’s Church in Pyrawang. Though made in
the 14 th century, the paintings seem quite modern.
For smaller travellers on the bicycle the »Water Adventure
Mini-Danube«, located in the charming
village Engelhartszell, is recommended. A themed
playground and the »Giant of the Danube«, a nearly
two meters long beluga in the big aquarium, are
definitely making it worth a visit. Maybe you also find
time to visit the magnificent »Trappist Monastery
Engelszell« with its beautiful rococo church and the
picturesque garden of the monastery.
When approaching Schlögen, you can have
a beautiful view on the ruins of the medieval
fortress »Haichenbach« on the other side of the
Danube. It is located on the back of the mountain
around which the Danube forms its curves and
thereby creates the famous »Schlögener Donauschlinge«.
