IN LOWER AUSTRIA

Historic sites, remnants of the Roman Limesborder

and the food and wine culture of

the Romans – the region along the Danube

has many exciting and enjoyable historical

remnants from Roman settlement times.

// GREIN – MELK (48 km)

The route begins in the medieval town of Grein

and leads past the Strudengau-region to Ybbs

and Pöchlarn including Arelape, a base of the

Roman Danube-flotilla. The route then continues

on to Melk and its magnificent Baroque Abbey.

// MELK – MAUTERN (38 km)

Past Melk, the Danube valley narrows forcing

cyclists through the UNESCO World Heritage

landscape of the Wachau-region. The day’s

destination is Mautern, the Roman Favianis,

and its impressive Roman fortifications.

// MAUTERN – TULLN (40 km)

From Mautern, cycle through the vast plain of the

Tullnerfeld. On the way, a short worthwhile detour is

Traismauer and its striking remains of the Roman

fort Augustianis. Continue along the Danube to

Tulln, the Roman Comagenis, with the Roman

Museum as the journey’s highlight.

ROMAN FOOTSTEPS

ALONG THE DANUBE CYCLE PATH

// TULLN – VIENNA (34 km)

The bike tour leads through the vast Tullnerfeld-region,

past extensive riverside woodlands. A short worthwhile

detour is Zeiselmauer and the walk-in castle

Cannabiaca! Having reached the Danube metropolis

Vienna, the remains of the Roman city of Vindobona

and the Viennese Roman Museum invite for a visit.

// VIENNA – HAINBURG (53 km)

On the final stage, leave Vienna and cycle through

extensive riverside woodlands to the east – the

Donau-Auen National Park (inform. on the route

diversion on Page 137). After crossing the Danube,

cyclists will reach the journey’s climax – the

Roman city Carnuntum, where several functional

Roman buildings have been reconstructed.
