Hub offers diverse health services
Awide range of health and
wellness services in a
convenient one­stop location
caters not only for residents of
the Silverstream subdivision
where it is located, but also for
people in Kaiapoi and
surrounding areas, including
Christchurch’s northern
suburbs.
At the heart of this ‘‘health
hub’’ is the Silverstream
Medical Centre, which provides
comprehensive health services
for patients at all stages of life.
The skilled team of four
doctors comprises Dr Amrit
Riat, who has recently joined
the practice from Britain, Dr
Don Ponnamperuma, Dr
George Dehn and Dr Beth
Shore.
Dr Riat brings with her a
wide range of experience and
knowledge, while Dr Shore also
holds adiploma in child health
so particularly enjoys working
with children and families.
With two female doctors,
women’s health is afocus for
the centre.
They offer full women’s
health checks at $80 for the
45­minute appointment, as well
as family planning and
contraception.
Dr Dehn and Dr
Ponnamperuma both have a
special interest in
musculoskeletal medicine and
are experienced in treating the
aches and pains that can affect
muscles, bones and joints as we
age, or through injuries
sustained at work or playing
sport.
The Silverstream Medical
Centre, established in
September 2018, is fresh, bright
and welcoming, with a
comfortable waiting area, while
the friendly doctors, nurses and
administration staff ensure
everyone feels at ease.
The centre welcomes new
patients, with doctor visits free
for under­14s. Prescriptions
can be requested and
appointments booked through
its website.
Adjacent to the medical
centre is the Silverstream
Kaiapoi Pharmacy, offering a
full range of pharmaceutical
services.
Pharmacists Elena
Rimbovska and Georgia
McLean, who own and operate
the pharmacy, see their role as
one of the “puzzle pieces” in
the integrated health care of
customers.
Working in conjunction with
the customer’s doctor, they
focus on optimising medicines
for maximum benefit, by
advising customers on the best
way and best times to take
them.
For those who take multiple
medications, or who don’t feel
like they are getting the most
from their medication, afree
medicine review with a
pharmacist can be especially
helpful, Elena says.
“Managing medicines can be
quite overwhelming so we
encourage patients or family
members to talk to us if they
have any issues or questions,
and make the most of their local
pharmacy.”
Listening to patients’
concerns is important for the
pharmacists, and as experts in
medicine they are able to
provide afull counselling
service, with aprivate
consultation room available.
They also provide wound
care and dressing, and will
recommend other
professionals if more
specialised treatment is
required.
Both pharmacists say
supplements are now being
incorporated as part of a
healthy lifestyle, with more
people taking them.
“It’s great to see that people
are becoming interested in
natural health to prevent
health conditions, and age
well,” Elena says.
Total Health Physio &
Podiatry, located on the other
side of the medical centre,
specialises in manual, handson
physiotherapy and exercise
rehabilitation for clients of all
ages.
There are three senior­level
qualified physiotherapists on
the staff –Teresa Hoult,
Brigette Higinbottom and
Brittany Peacock.
“Having three
physiotherapists means we
have adiverse skill base,”
Teresa says.
Joint mobilisation and soft
tissue massage are applied to
help patients return to full
fitness after surgery or injury,
with exercise­based
rehabilitation an important
part of the process.
Treatment is tailored to suit
the individual patient’s needs
and sessions last for afull halfhour,
allowing the physiotherapist
to spend time with the
patient, which Teresa believes
is very important.
“Close working relationships
with the Silverstream Medical
Centre and the pharmacy, plus
specialists, means we can
ensure client management is
maximised,” she says.
Acupuncture treatment is
also available.
Podiatry services are offered
at the clinic every Monday and
Wednesday by qualified
podiatrist Corrie Hoult.
He provides general foot
care, including minor surgery,
and also makes orthotics, which
are specifically tailored to
individual needs.
Triton Audiology services are
available on Thursdays at the
clinic, with the audiologist and
ear nurse alternating
fortnightly. Free hearing tests
and ear wax removal is
provided by Triton.
Total Health Physio &
Podiatry also runs Pilates
classes, which are proving very
popular, Teresa says.
Pilates enhances core
strength and flexibility,
improving general well­being,
as well as being auseful tool for
injury rehabilitation and
prevention.
All three health facilities are
located at 42 Silverstream
Boulevard, with ample parking
allowing easy access to all the
medical services.
