‘Iwas after achallenge’
By RACHEL MACDONALD
KorbynNewman onceconsidered horses
to be abit intimidating. But they provided
awelcome chance to get out of the
classroom.
Today,heislearning the ropesasa
harness racingdriver,havingspentthe
last four years workingwith horses.
Growing up in WestEyreton, Korbyn
went to the localprimaryschool,movedto
OxfordArea Schoolfor his intermediate
years,then attended St Bede’sin
Christchurchfor highschool.
‘‘I didn’t like school;Idon’t really like
being indoors,’’ he says.
‘‘So, when the opportunitycameuptodo
one day aweek of work experience, I
signedupwith harnessracing trainer
Benny Hill.
‘‘I knewnothing about horses; they were
just big and abit scary, but they werea
chancetoget out of the schoolroom. That
was about four years ago.’’
Since then, Benny and his staffhave
taughtKorbyn everything he needed to
start as adriver, he says.
‘‘I justlove it. Iwas afterachallenge,
and that’s what Igot. Ibeganhelping out
aroundthe place, and then got moved up
to working horses,’’hesays.
‘‘I’d been there afew months beforeIgot
into asulky, and then that feelingof
driving kickedin. It’s bloodygood fun!’’
He is now in his second season in the
sulky.These days,hegets two to four
drivesaweek, and travelsasfar as he
needs to, to fit in withtrainers who need
him.
‘‘I go for whateverIcan getinthe junior
driving races,’’ he says. ‘‘If Benny’s got a
Kaikoura housing plan aworld leader
‘‘WhileNew Zealanddoesn’t need this
level of processing, we know the
technology existsand we can adapt
variations of it to suit,’’ he says.
Garry is talking with Lincoln
University’s Professor David Simmons, of
the Faculty of Environment,Society and
Design, aboutapotentialagreement with
Lincoln Universityunder which Garry
will personally fund an initial research
hub at Ocean Ridge.
Lincoln University has amore than
30yearrelationship with Kaikoura
through tourism benchmarkingand
certification on sustainability metrics.
ProfessorSimmons saysitisanexciting
initiative and LincolnUniversity has
offeredtoprovide student inputand
scientific inputtomeasure, manage and
reportonthe development’s pathway to
sustainability.
‘‘This is in keepingwith the Kaikoura
horse running, Idrive for him. Otherwise,
I’llput my name up for anyone who needs
someone in the sulky.’’
And the wins are mounting. Last
Thursday, for example, he described a
tight race that started out fast. The horse
has pace, but likestofinish fast. ‘‘Wehung
District Council’s longterm interest in
beingleaders in sustainability and to
bring urban settlement alongside the
existing tourism platform.
‘‘It should be worldleading, best
practice.”
Garry is entirely selffunding the
initiative and has the support of the
financially challenged Kaikoura council,
whichislooking at innovative approaches
to revitalisethe town.
The councilisstreamlining processes
to help solve the region’s housing crisis,
triggered by the 2016earthquakeand the
globalfinancial crisis, among other
factors.
Mayor Craig Mackle says the initiative
is “pretty bloodyawesome”.Hebelieves
the project will be agood thingfor
Kaikoura.
‘‘It’s green, innovative and everything
you could ask for.”
He says that Garryisnot asking for
anything more than supportfrom the
back until the others were getting tired,
then it was the right time to go wide and
take the otherson, and we got the win.’’
His wordsfor other youngpeople
considering such acareer?‘‘It’s hard work,
but great fun, and it’srewarding. If you put
in the hours, thoserewardswill come.’’
councilatthis stage, and the councilis
happy to say that it is behind him.
Garry believes the development is a
first in New Zealand,whereacouncil is
leading the waybyagreeing to work
openly and transparently, sharing
resources and technology with him to
explorethe use of sustainable initiatives.
The ultimate goal is to be the first town
in the world running entirely off the grid,
and Garry says that believing in this endgoal, and
havingthe council’s support,
puts him well overhalf way to achieving
it.
The 130hectare Ocean Ridge
subdivision is already fully zoned and
consented.About70traditional lots have
beensold or are already built on.
By the time the remaining300 or so lots
are developed, includingthe commercial
and retail areas, Ocean Ridge will
account for around aquarter of
Kaikoura’srating base in terms of
revenue.
