Marching at their leisure<br />
The <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>Classics marching<br />
team will be performing on the national<br />
stageinChristchurch on Friday and<br />
Saturday, March 6to7.<br />
The 18 members, who range in age from<br />
60 to 81, will march in the 28thNew<br />
Zealand National Leisure Marching<br />
Display Daysinthe Horncastle Arena,<br />
whichlocal members helped to organise.<br />

organising committee, madeupof<br />
membersfrom Christchurch and <strong>North</strong><br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong> teams, along with sponsors,<br />
have been planning the eventfor 18<br />
months.<br />
‘‘We have78teams arriving from<br />
throughoutNew Zealand, some 700 to 800<br />
people.’’<br />
Doorsopen at noon on Friday witha<br />
marchpast, with the committee being<br />
pipedinby amember of the McAlpines<br />
<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> Pipe Band.<br />
Following the officialopening by<br />
Christchurch Mayor LianneDalziel, the<br />
teams start their individualdisplays, with<br />
the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Classics up first.<br />
The 78 teams continuetheir displays<br />
through to Saturday afternoon, witha<br />
dance at night.<br />
Jenni said the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
Classics marching team was formed in July<br />
1994 and meetsatthe Rangiora Borough<br />
Schooleach Thursday evening for<br />
training.<br />
‘‘Leisure marching is anoncompetitive<br />
sport for matureladies thatoffers<br />
participants asense of teamspirit, fitness,<br />
long life friendships and lots of fun.<br />
‘‘Marching keepsthe brain ticking over<br />
because we needtocountour stepsand<br />
remember each movement and we have<br />
lots of laughswhile doing this.’’<br />
The local group attends two major<br />
eventsayear,including aSouth Island<br />
event in October and anational eventin<br />
March.They also meetwith other local<br />
teams during the yearfor events and<br />
march in theRangiora Christmas Parade.<br />

This work will involve alow-flying<br />
helicopter flying above the line slowly<br />
(with brief pauses as required), as<br />
highlighted on the accompanying map.<br />
