Meet Kevin Georgel, 

our new CEO 

Director before being promoted to Chief Executive 

in 2014. This was a national role where I led a team 

who turned around and grew Admiral’s estate of 

community pubs to ensure they were fit to thrive 

in the fast-changing marketplace. So hopefully you 

can see from my career so far that pubs, beer and 

the South West are all very much at my heart. 

Throughout my career I have been lucky enough 

to call Tavistock my home. I still live near Tavistock 

with my wife Kate, four children and three dogs. 

Being a South-West man with much of my career 

to date having been based here, I am passionate 

about our region and appreciate the strengths, 

challenges and opportunities that operating in the 

South West pose. As CEO of St Austell Brewery 

and, also in my role as a director of the British Beer 

and Pub Association I will take the opportunity to 

champion the South West’s hospitality sector. 

In January 2020 I was privileged to take 

on the role of Chief Executive at St Austell 

Family Group following James Staughton’s 

retirement. It’s still very early days but I’ve 

really appreciated the warm welcome people 

have shown me in my first few weeks and I 

am looking forward to meeting many more 

of you in the weeks and months ahead. 

I’d like to take this opportunity to share a little 

about who I am and to assure you of St Austell 

Brewery’s commitment to supporting our 

customers throughout the South West. 

I started working in the Beer and Pub Industry in 

1995 when I joined what was Bass Brewers Wales & 

West as a territory sales manager in North Devon. 

The business was acquired by Molson Coors in 

2001 and I stayed with the business until 2003. 

During this time I worked in a number of sales 

and customer marketing roles. With my next role 

I moved from beer sales to pub operations as 

regional operations director for Punch Taverns. 

Initially I led the team running the Punch business 

in the South West before I was promoted to 

Operations Director for Southern England and 

then Operations Director for the UK. In 2010 I was 

asked to join Admiral Taverns, initially as Managing 

Having been a non-executive director on St Austell 

Brewery’s board for the last four years, I am not 

beginning from a standing start but I still have 

much to learn. St Austell Brewery has built its 

success by brewing wonderful beers, supplying 

the drinks range your customers want and working 

with our customers and partners to help us all 

succeed. We are committed to continuing with this 

approach and building on the strong legacy that 

James and the team have built in recent years. 

This is the first time since George Luck’s 

appointment back in 1948 that the CEO role has 

gone to someone who is not a direct descendant 

of Walter Hicks and I am keenly aware of the faith 

that the Brewery family, the people who work for 

St Austell Brewery and our customers are putting 

in me. I am absolutely delighted to have been given 

this opportunity to work for such a great family 

business and look forward to what’s to come.

glass filled with ice. Pour over the 

lemonade, stir and then garnish with a 

fresh raspberry and a sprig of mint.

Plum Tart 

Ingredients 

• 50ml Edinburgh Gin 

Plum & Vanilla Liqueur 

• 10ml Campari 

• 20ml Lime Juice 

• 1 Egg White 

• Dehydrated Lime Wheel 

Method 

Dry shake the liqueur, Campari, lime juice 

and egg white. Then add ice and shake 

again. Double strain into a chilled coupe 

glass and garnish with the dehydrated 

lime wheel. 

Clover Club 

Ingredients 

• 50ml Hendrick’s Gin 

• 25ml Lemon Juice 

• 20ml Raspberry Syrup 

• 1 Egg White 

• Fresh Raspberry 

Great as a 

Mocktail 

Method 

Add all of the ingredients to a cocktail 

shaker with ice. Shake well and fine strain 

into a cocktail glass before garnishing 

with the fresh raspberry. 

Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Amaretti Sour

• 5ml Sugar Syrup (1:1)

Host your own St Patrick’s Day bash with 

these Irish inspired drink recipes! 

Jameson Caskmates Tonic & Lemon 

Ingredients 

• 50ml Jameson Caskmates 

IPA Edition 

• 150ml Tonic Water 


Method 

Fill a glass with ice and pour in the 

Jameson Caskmates IPA Edition. Top up 

the glass with the tonic water and drop 

in a lemon wedge to garnish. 

Guinness Wilde Oscar Old Fashioned 

Ingredients 

• 30ml Guinness 

• 45ml Bulleit Bourbon 

• 15ml Sugar Syrup 1:1 

• 1 Dash of Bitters 

• 1 Orange Peel Slice 

• 1 Maraschino Cherry 

Method 

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice then add all 

of the ingredients and stir. Strain over a 

large ice cube into a glass. Garnish with 

the large slice of orange peel and the 

maraschino cherry. 

Irish Mule 

Ingredients 

• 60ml Peaky Blinder Irish 

Whiskey 

• 165ml Ginger Beer 

• Juice of half a Lime 

• 1 Lime Wedge 

• 1 Mint Sprig 

Method 

This is a St Patrick’s Day take on a classic 

Moscow Mule with the addition of Irish 

Whiskey. Build over ice and garnish with 

the lime wedge and sprig of mint.

Cornish Negroni 

Ingredients 

• 25ml Trevethan Gin 

• 25ml Koneva 

• 25ml Knightor Vermouth 

• 1 Slice of Orange Peel 

Method 

Pour all of the ingredients into a rocks 

glass filled with ice and stir. Take a long 

piece of orange peel, and wrap it around 

a straw to form a spiral. Skewer the spiral 

with a cocktail stick and place on the rim 

of the glass as a garnish. 

Salcombe Marmajito 

Ingredients 

• 50ml Salcombe Gin 

‘Start Point’ 

• 2tsp Blood Orange Marmalade 


• Elderflower Tonic 

• 10 Mint Leaves 


• 1 Slice of Blood Orange 

Method 

Place the gin, blood orange marmalade, 

lemon juice and mint leaves into a 

cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake 

for 10 seconds and double strain into a 

highball tumbler filled with ice. Top with 

elderflower tonic and garnish with the 

sprig of mint and slice of blood orange. 

Tarquin’s Rhubarb & Elderflower Fizz 

Ingredients 

• 50ml Tarquin’s Rhubarb 

& Raspberry Gin 

• 12.5ml Elderflower Cordial 

• 125ml Fever-Tree Ginger Ale 

• Fresh Raspberries 


Method

Method 

Add the gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup 

to a tall glass filled with ice and stir until 

cold. Top with soda water and garnish

• 50ml Wrecking Coast Clotted 

Cream Gin 

• 100ml Navas Premium Tonic 

• 1 Fresh Strawberry 

Method 

Fill a rocks glass with ice and pour over 

the Wrecking Coast Clotted Cream Gin. 

Top up with the Navas Premium Tonic 

and garnish with a fresh strawberry 

sliced in half. 

Conker Café Spritz 

Ingredients 

• 25ml Conker Cold Brew 

• 200ml Tonic Water 

• 1 Slice of Orange Peel 

Method 

Add the tonic water to a wine glass full 

of ice, then pour over the Conker Cold 

Brew and then garnish with a slice of 

orange peel.

Meet Plymouth Gin 

As part of our regular Meet the Distiller 

feature, we are travelling the length and 

breadth of the South West to bring you 

the latest information from some of your 

favourite drinks producers. Next on our 

travels is Plymouth Gin, where Karen 

Balman from our Free Trade team met with 

Master Distiller, Sean Harrison. 

Sean Harrison, Plymouth Gin Master Distiller 

and a global ambassador for Plymouth’s 

premium gin craft, joined Plymouth Gin in 

1994 as Assistant Manager, rising to become 

Master Distiller. With this role comes great 

responsibility. Namely, becoming keeper of 

their coveted 200 year old recipe, passed 

down verbally to every Master Distiller 

since 1793. As a former Lieutenant of the 

Royal Navy, we can only assume Sean has 

undergone military grade interrogation 

training. He won’t say. 

Their distillery, the Black Friar’s building 

dates back to the early 1400s. The most 

intact part of the distillery is the Refectory 

Room, a medieval hall with a fine hull-shaped 

timber roof built in 1431. It’s one of the oldest 

buildings in Plymouth, and protected as a 

precious national monument. 

The distillery buildings were formerly a 

monastery inhabited by the Black Friars. In 

1536, at the time of the Reformation and 

dissolution of the monasteries, the former 

home of the Black Friars was put to a variety 

of other uses including being the town’s 

Marshalsea or debtor’s prison. It was also the 

first Non-Conformist meeting place and a 

billet for Huguenot refugees who fled France 

for Plymouth. 

The Pilgrim Fathers spent their last night 

in England there in 1620. It was from the 

distillery they made the walk down to the 

harbour to set sail on the Mayflower on their 

epic voyage to start a new life in America, 

where they founded a new Plymouth. 

The Mayflower ship forms Plymouth Gin’s 

trademark label today. Black Friars is 

indisputably the oldest working gin distillery 

with records of a ‘mault-house’ on the 

premises going back to 1697. However, it was 

in 1793 that Mr Coates joined the established 

distilling business of Fox & Williamson and 

the distilling of Plymouth Gin began. Soon 

the business was to become known as Coates 

& Co, which it remained until March 2004.

Tell us a bit about the heritage of 

Plymouth Gin 

Our distillery is the oldest distillery in 

England still actively making gin in its 

original location. The actual recipe for the 

gin has not changed in 200 years. It has 

been passed down and currently there are 

only five people who know the recipe and 

only two of them know how to make it. I 

hand select the botanicals, hand fill the stills 

and cut by taste. 

How did your career with Plymouth Gin 

start? 

I left the Royal Navy 24 years ago in search 

of a job in Plymouth. I saw an advert in 

a newspaper for an assistant manager 

position at the distillery and applied. I was 

then trained on the stills, given the recipe for 

Plymouth Gin and then taught how to make 

it – it took five years for me to perfect it. 

Can you tell us what’s so special about 

your gins? 

It’s the original gin of choice for most 

bartenders, if you are looking for a 

traditional style of gin you can’t go wrong 

with Plymouth Gin. In fact, in the original 

1930s Savoy cocktail book it is the most 

listed gin.

affect the essential oils within the botanicals 

and we need the right flavours to create 

the gin so our customers don’t notice any 

difference. I spend eight months of the 

year looking for a specific flavour profile, 

travelling around Europe selecting the 

botanicals from our six preferred suppliers. 

What is the most enjoyable? 

I enjoy watching someone order a Plymouth 

Gin drink from anywhere around the world. 

There are so many gins to choose from and 

it fills me with pride when they choose ours. 

I also enjoy drinking the gin – I make the gin, 

the bartender makes the cocktail and I enjoy 

drinking them! 

What can we look forward to 

in the future? 

We won’t be following the latest crazes – we 

make a classic style of gin with history and 

heritage behind it. I do experiment and have 

over 900 gins out the back, some are great, 

some are awful! Although we are working on 

a new product which may launch towards 

the end of the year, so watch this space!

Re-emerging Wine Markets 

Are you looking for something more 

interesting than your go-to safe varietals? 

Then look no further than the winemaking 

wonderland of Eastern Europe, striking 

the perfect balance between the safety of 

well-known varietals and the excitement of 

something new. But why is it only recently 

that we’ve been able to truly discover these 

hidden gems of the Old World? 

After World War II, wineries in countries 

such as Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary were 

seized by the state as communist regime 

was established. Indigenous grapes were 

destroyed to make way for high-yielding 

international grape varietals, reducing quality 

– resulting in a damaged reputation for 

Eastern Europe’s wine market. 

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 

the late 1980s, wineries in Eastern Europe 

have been returned to their pre-war owners 

and quality has gradually been restored 

following considerable investment. So 

although countries in Eastern Europe have 

been making wine for over two thousand 

years, it’s only in recent years that the export 

market has opened up and really established 

itself. Wines from these countries are now 

appearing on more wine lists worldwide with 

particularly high demand from the U.K where 

Romanian wines steal the show delivering 

both reliable quality and good value for 

money.
