Welcome to our first issue of 2024 and to my favourite 

season of the year. With Spring upon us, new life is 

abundant and we have much to celebrate! We are 

launching our new 2024 Wine Portfolio which you can 

access in due course and with it comes 21 brand new wines 

that we’re excited to share with you (please see pages 7-19). 

March brings with it a number of important days all of 

which could potentially drive consumers out into the ontrade 

on the hunt for great food, wine, and company. St 

Piran’s Day on the 5th March where we’ll be raising a glass 

of local wine with our pasties, International Women’s Day 

is on the 8th March, keep your eyes peeled throughout 

this brochure and check out our social channels for more 

information on the women in wine responsible for many of 

St Austell Wines top tipples. 

Speaking of inspirational women, Mother’s Day falls 

on March 10th and with little time for rest, it’s onto 

International Riesling Day on the 13th March. Easter follows 

soon after, bringing with it the familiar rush of holidaying 

families and sumptuous roast lunches with your nearest 

and dearest. With so much to celebrate, you’ll be pleased 

to hear that we have three delicious English sparkling 

wines on offer for raising a toast, along with an outstanding

In April we will be celebrating International Viognier Day. 

Viognier is one of my favourite grape varieties, rich and 

aromatic, it’s a versatile wine, perfect for food matching. 

It’s weight and flavour profile lends itself to lightly spiced 

Asian dishes which grace the menus of many a seafood

Aromas are a combination of apples, citrus and freshly 

baked bread. On the palate, this wine shows great 

vivacity, complexity and a fine mousse. 

Winemaker's Notes: This Classic Cuvée White is a blend 

of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from 2015. The 

grapes were whole bunch pressed and cool fermented 

separately, with only the free run juice used for this

Condrieu E. Guigal | France 

A dry and complex Condrieu (which is a region in the 

Northern Rhône in France). This wine is made from Viognier 

(the grape) by fantastic third generation, family owned 

domain E. Guigal. Condrieu is the region where Viognier 

reaches its peak in quality and interest. The vines produce 

low yields of high quality grapes that are partially barrel 

fermented to add richness and complexity. It has remarkably 

pure aromas complimented by a soft roundness. A typical 

expression of the Viognier grape with peach and apricot 

flavours.

Mother's Day 

Sunday 10th March 

Whether you're lucky enough to be dining out this 

Mother's day with your loved one or honouring from 

afar, we have something special for you to enjoy on 

the day. 

To honour the favourite women in our life, we couldn't 

think of a better option. Winemaker Sarah Massey 

has yet again made a phenominal wine for Lyme Bay, 

the Devonshire winery fast becoming a favourite for 

all of us here at St Austell Wines. Made from 100% 

Pinot Noir this wine is concentrated and intensely 

flavourful, unlike the delicate pale rosé we've become 

familiar with drinking, this is expressive with red 

fruit leaping out of the glass. Texturally it's rich and 

rounded making it a perfect wine for food matching,

Graham Beck

The foundations for the success of the 

Graham Beck brand were laid in 1983 when 

the late Graham Beck purchased Madeba, a 

farm located outside the Western Cape town 

of Robertson. 

It was his ardent ambition to establish a 

world-class winery in this area, Beck oversaw 

the creation of a state-of-the-art cellar and 

groundbreaking tasting facility, ensuring the 

growing reputation of Graham Beck as a leading 

international wine destination. Always up for a 

challenge Graham declared the estate’s flagship 

would be none other than a sparkling wine. 

Fortuitously the area, with its outstanding 

climate and rich limestone soils, proved to be 

ideal for the cultivation of Chardonnay and 

Pinot Noir – two of the three Cap Classique 

varieties (Pinot Meunier being the third variety, 

very rarely used in South Africa). Today Graham 

Beck is considered one of the country's finest 

Cap Classique sparkling wines and a serious 

contender internationally.

well-known Greek white wine grapes. The Moderne 

Allegorie wine is light in body and colour. A refreshingly

Assyrtiko’s acidity makes it an ideal match for seafood 

such as oysters, shellfish or fish. Greek-inspired dishes

Langlois Chateau "LC" Cremant Blanc,

France 

Langlois Chateau has been the benchmark of Loire wine 

making since 1885 and remains a firm favourite with its 

Cremant de Loire. 

Made in the traditional Champagne Method (where the 

second fermentation takes place in the bottle), Chenin 

Blanc takes centre stage, backed up with Chardonnay

André Lurton 

The Lurton name is synonymous with 

Bordeaux. André Lurton has made his own 

mark on the region - he was a true visionary 

who inherited Chateau Bonnet in 1953 

and subsequently was instrumental in the 

establishment of Pessac-Leognan. Over 

the years he grew the business from 30 to 

600 hectares, and it is now comprised of 5 

further estates. 

Now with Jacques, Andre’s son, as president and 

Jacques’s niece Mathilde de Caix Lurton at the helm, 

the business continues to innovate, with an increasing 

focus on social and environmental sustainability.

Château de Barbe Blanche | France 

Château de Cruzeau | France 

Château de Barbe Blanche is situated in Lussac Saint- 

Émilion, Bordeaux. This estate benefits from the same 

exceptional clay-limestone terroir as the great château's 

that surround it. Made like a Cru Classé with a high 

proportion of Cabernet Franc, it shows incredible silkiness 

and richness after only 3 or 4 years. Made using fruit from 

30-year-old vines atop one of the highest plateaus in St 

Emilion, the Merlot brings red fruit aromas and silkiness 

whereas the Cabernet Franc gives freshness and tannins. 

Barrel ageing softens the wine and its tannins to a velvety 

touch in the mouth, while bringing tantalising hints of oak 

to an already complex wine. 

Château de Cruzeau is a discreet estate in Pessac- 

Léognan, Bordeaux which seduces with its remarkable 

gravel terroir and its consistency is exceptional. Covering 

almost 100 hectares, the estate is set on gravelly hilltops, 

rich in rolled pebbles. The plots are generally southfacing: 

an ideal situation for producing great wines, 

typical of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. 

The Cruzeau Blanc is the finest expression of its terroir 

with a rich, complex nose, with lovely notes of white 

fruit and citrus, freshness and roundness on the palate. 

Lemon-meringue and biscuit aromas lead to a very 

smooth and flavourful palate that has plenty of drinkable 

appeal.

Suavia Soave Classico | Italy

Located in Fitta, Suavia is owned and run by the three 

Tessari sisters, who have taken over from their parents. 

With plenty of passion and hard work, Meri, Valentina 

and Alessandra have taken the winery to the next level, 

where it can rightly be regarded as one of the region’s 

very best. 

The wines produced at Suavia are aromatic, lively and 

fresh with a fabulous concentration of flavour. Only 

the two native varieties of Soave are grown in their 

vineyards: Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. 

We were blown away by this wine during our annual 

tasting, a firm favourite with our buying team and Wine 

Development Managers alike. 

Complex yet delicate with great texture, it's a wine that 

improves with every glass! Fresh fragrances of fruits and 

white flowers accompanied by mineral notes. Juicy with a

Italy 

Araldica 'La Lancellota' Gavi | Italy 

ve 

The Gavi appellation is in the Piemonte region of northwestern 

Italy. One of the leading producers in the area is 

Araldica, who source their Cortese grapes from southwest 

facing vineyards in the Monferrato hills. 

This Gavi has bags of fresh citrus and stone fruit 

aromas, apple and apricot flavours, and crisp lemony 

acidity on the finish. Some lees ageing adds to the 

bright, textural palate and makes it a good match for 

summer salads, chicken and fish dishes. 

This is an elegant and fresh Gavi, easy-drinking but 

with depth of flavour. Zesty citrus fruit and lightly floral 

characters with hints of apple and pear. Fresh, steely 

acidity and underlying mineral characters, balanced by 

notes of melon and stone fruit, and a touch of fennel.

International 

Riesling day 

13th March 

Riesling (pronounced reece-ling) is a real 

favourite amongst the industry, making 

some of the finest white wines on the 

planet. The grape variety is arguably most 

famous from Germany where it grows 

across all regions, however the French 

may have something to say about that 

with their stunning examples from Alsace, 

as well as Australia flying the flag for the 

southern hemisphere. 

Riesling is famous for its zippy acidity and 

diversity in styles, from lusciously sweet, to a 

mouth tingling bone-dry. It is because of this 

acidity that German Riesling is so wonderfully 

fresh, elegant and an excellent partner for 

food. When it comes to ageing Riesling, many 

believe it is the best of all white grapes; even 

world-renowned wine critic Jancis Robinson 

believes Riesling’s “are almost immortal”.

Vallet Frères Bourgogne Pinot Noir | France 

Founded in 1864 by Pierre Bourée, Vallet Frères is now in 

the hands of the fourth generation of the family, Jean- 

Christophe Vallet. 

The family owns vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin 

including the entire monopole of Clos de la Justice and in 

the Grand Cru of Charmes-Chambertin. Vallet Frères also 

act as a négociant sourcing the best grapes from growers 

in other parts of Burgundy, with whom it has worked 

closely for decades.The wines it produces are complex, 

fine and authentic examples of Burgundian Pinot Noir and 

Chardonnay.

Petit Guiraud, Sauternes | France 

While the average production ratio in Bordeaux is one 

bottle of wine per vine, Château Guiraud craft only one 

glass. 

France 

That’s some serious concentration and complexity 

coming from one single vine. And how do they manage 

it? By banishing chemicals that encourage over 

production and promoting biodiversity in the vineyard. A 

study in 2010 found 635 species of insects and spiders in 

their vineyards and in 2011 they became the first Grand 

Cru Classé to be certified organic. 

Petit Guiraud is the second wine of Château Guiraud, 

it has flavours of incredibly fresh fruit: grapefruit, 

passion fruit, pineapple. The wine is floral and elegant, 

light bodied and easy to drink. Airy, delicate and very 

zesty fresh with notes of lemon, dried apricot and 

pink grapefruit. This wine is pure indulgence for totally 

uninhibited drinking. Classic Sauternes, versatile with 

dessert, perfect with salty blue cheese!

Our long standing relationship with Azabache goes back 

decades and they remain a firm favourite of ours with 

their first class wines that never fail to impress. Their 

oak aged white Rioja is a real gem and an outstanding 

wine for the price point. Rioja most definately doesn't 

always have to be red! 

Characteristic aromas of plush white flowers, mature 

exotic fruit combined with a touch of apple. Followed 

by toasted nutty hints and a rich, elegant finish. An 

outstanding white Rioja that punches well above its

Glorioso Gran Reserva Rioja | Spain 

With over 125 years’ experience of crafting high quality 

wines, Bodegas Palacio is a pioneering and progressive 

winery. Founded in 1894 by Don Cosme Palacio, an 

entrepreneur whose inquisitive and innovative spirit 

contributed to the Riojan wine revolution, they are lucky 

enough to own one of the very few “Viñedo Singular”, 

where 100-year-old vines grow. 

Spain 

Almudena Alberca MW, Spain's only female Master 

of Wine, joined Entrecanales Domecq e Hijos (owner 

of Bodegas Palacio) as technical director in 2015. 

Almundena has overseen, the repositioning and 

modernisation of the range launching wines of great 

quality, elegance and finesse. 

Intense and elegant with notes of blueberries and red 

forest fruits. Due to its aging in French oak, delicate 

aromas of menthol and cedar appear with a mineral finish 

that gives it personality.

Crab pâté

Hahn Pinot Gris | USA

Vieille Monnaie Pinot Noir | France 

The Pacific Ocean breezes of Monterey slow down the 

ripening of the grapes and enable extended time on the 

vine. Thus, resulting in a grassy minerality with tropical 

fruits, citrus and hints of lemon blossom followed by a 

bright and brisk acidity. The cool fermentation in stainless 

steel tanks preserves the delicate floral and stone fruit 

aromas and lends itself as a perfect partner to Crab Pate. 

Easter Fact - The Japanese Blue Crab or the Horse crab 

is the most consumed crab in the world. 

A unique take on Pinot Noir from two growers' 

plantings in the sun drenched vineyards of the Southern 

Languedoc. A small portion of the wine (around 15%) 

spends 3 months in oak to give added character and 

weight. Fuller than Pinot Noir from Burgundy, it has a 

warm, rich nose with aromas of dark wild cherry and just 

a hint of toasty oak. The palate is nicely balanced with 

an exciting, savoury bitterness provided by ripe, tasty 

tannins which makes Vieille Monnaie the perfect red wine 

for roasted lamb.

Starter 

My choice for a wonderful Easter Hors d’oeuvre 

would be Crab Pâté, lovingly matched with a glass of 

Californian, Hahn Pinot Gris. 

Crab is a highly prized and popular South West 

seafood known for it’s sweet, succulent meat a 

delicate moist texture all with a hint of ocean-like 

flavour. Beautifully blended with full fat soft cheese, 

single cream and lots of amazing condiments to 

make this Easter favorite crab pâté. 

Enjoyed on a wonderful fresh bed of salad. Loaded 

with peppery rocket, tomato and the sweety drop 

Biquinho peppers. 

The wines acidity and mineral style is the perfect 

partner for this dish and what a start to a stunning 

Easter dining experience. 

Hot cross buns

We have to thank the Lindo family for their pioneering 

grape growing and wine production in the South West, 

putting Cornwall firmly on the map as a quality award 

winning wine county. 

The superb golden sparkler with an elegant fizz and full, 

ripe flavours, packed with elderflower flavouring, lots 

of hedgerow fruits and yeast aromatics of the wine, 

compliment the bun's spice and fruitiness.

Main Course 

Why break tradition for Easter and enjoy a wonderful 

leg of lamb, accompanied with my choice of wine, 

Vieille Monnaie, Pinot Noir. 

Many people describe the taste of lamb as rich, 

tender, and gamey. This distinctive flavour is a 

result of various factors that influence the taste of 

the meat. It’s grass which gives lamb its unique 

flavour. Roasted with rosemary and garlic with lots of 

seasoning this delicious dinner is a winner. 

Treat 

Taking time out and fancy something special, 

why not enjoy a tasty hot cross bun with a glass of 

sparkling Camel Valley wine. 

A hot cross bun typically has a slightly sweet and 

spiced flavour, with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and 

other warm spices. They are served warm, and they 

have a spicy (cinnamon and allspice) taste with an 

enjoyable brioche texture and added raisins. 

A superstition surrounding hot cross buns. When 

sharing a bun with another you should say “Half for 

you and half for me, between us two shall goodwill 

be”, This will provide good luck to your friendship for 

the year. 


International 

Viognier Day

With its heartland in the appelation of 

Condrieu in the Northern Rhone, Viognier is 

on a whirlwind of a journey as it's popularity 

has soared and is now grown in Australia, the 

Americas and South Africa as well as making 

a welcome appearance in the south of France. 

Viognier is wonderfully seductive with its 

aromatic richness showing flavours of apricot, 

jasmine and white flowers and makes for the 

perfect match to mild spice, ginger based dishes, 

pork and root vegetables. Viognier also loves 

oxygen – Give it a good swirl around your glass 

and more of its wonderful aromatics shine 

through. This makes it the perfect wine to offer 

by the glass and these 3 outstanding examples 

are well worth discovering.

Painted Wolf 'The Den' Pinotage Rosé 

South Africa 

This is a wonderfully dry, fruity rosé with 

delicate pomegranate and cranberry aromas 

complemented by subtle hints of rose petal. On 

the palate these are joined by savoury, almost 

biscuity flavours underlined by crisp acidity. 

Painted Wolf 'The Den' Pinotage 

South Africa 

An intense fruit-packed wine with notes of 

summer berries, savoury spice and toasty 

cedarwood flavours. The Den wines are comfort 

wines, and this wine delivers just that.
