MACH 2020MTA PRESIDENT SAYS “UK MANUFACTURINGPROVIDERS SHOULD EMBRACE THEIR ROLEAS ‘CHAMPIONS OF PRODUCTIVITY’Marcus Burton MBE, MTA President andDirector of Yamazaki Mazak.The 6th February saw the ManufacturingTechnologies Association’s (MTA) AnnualDinner take place at the at the Royal LancasterHotel, London. Always a popular event formanufacturing technology providers, over 400guests got together to discuss the future andcelebrate success.MTA President and Director of YamazakiMazak, Marcus Burton MBE, used his keynotespeech to address some of the hot topicsaffecting the UK manufacturing sector: Brexitand future trade, climate change, how MTAmembers are ‘champions of productivity’ andof course MACH 2020.On productivity he said “MTA membershave the equipment, ideas and expertise for ourmanufacturers to transform their productivity.In fact, our MTA members are the ‘Championsof Productivity’. As such we have a hugeopportunity, and responsibility, to improve theeconomic well-being of the whole country.”He continued by highlighting that MACH2020 is just around the corner, saying “MACH isthe only place in the UK to see such technologyon display and under power – but it is morethan that – it is the spotlight for our creativity.It’s just ten weeks away now, and I, for one,can’t wait to see what the ‘Champions ofProductivity’ have to offer the 25,000 plusvisitors we expect to come from far and wide.”The MTA President didn’t shirk away fromtough topics, addressing concerns on climatechange. and Brexit. Saying “The UKgovernment is committed to achieving net zerogreenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Thesechanges will cause disruption but undoubtedlywill bring huge opportunities for innovativemanufacturers. We must be at the centre of thistransformation and develop new innovativeproducts and services using the latest digitaltechnologies.”On Brexit he reiterated the Association’scommitment to engage with government toensure “Sensible cooperation on regulations,developed by listening to our industry, willensure our sector can continue to becompetitive in our biggest market. We need acustoms regime that is light touch, and theability to send people all over the continent atshort notice – we need this flexibility to supportour customers.”www.mta.org.uk.MADE SMARTERMACH 2020 is pleased to announce that theMade Smarter programme will be exhibitingat the UK’s national manufacturingshowcase. Their stand at the exhibition willlook to help SMEs start their digital journey.The Made Smarter North West pilot isalready working with SMEs to help themintroduce digital tools and technologies toboost productivity and growth.So far 300 North Western small andmedium sized manufacturers have securedsupport, including specialised advice and£1.6M of funding, in the first year of theprogramme.The North West pilot is being overseen bythe Made Smarter Commission – apartnership between the Department forBusiness, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS)and industry leaders.The programme aims to kick start a newindustrial revolution for the manufacturingsector and turn the country into a worldleader in digital technologies. Thesetechnologies can help close the productivitygap in the UK and cost effectively boostproduction.The Made Smarter team are looking toimplement what they have learnt in theNorth West Pilot to help roll the scheme outto other areas and regions of the UK.Made Smarter is bringing this help andsupport to MACH 2020 in order to reacheven more makers and signpost themtowards taking their first steps into Industry4.0.Donner Edwards.James Selka, DL, CEO of theManufacturing Technologies Associationwhich organise MACH on behalf of industry,said “We are delighted to welcome MadeSmarter to MACH 2020, we have been a hugesupporter of the initial Review andsubsequent launch of the North West Pilot.Our members and exhibitors create thetechnology that’ll will power this newindustrial revolution.”He continued: “MACH 2020 is the perfectplatform to reach out to manufacturing andengineering firms, with a readymadeaudience who are set to benefit from theadvice and support the Made SmarterProgram has to offer.
