his/her journey.
Glenn Smith, President and CEO of
Mouser Electronics, is both an industry
leader and a local business leader in
North Texas. He was named 2019’
s
Top Public CEO by Fort Worth
Business Press. Smith has been a recognized
leader in the North Texas business community
since 2004, when he became Mouser’s
President and CEO.
While still a college student, Smith joined the
company as a part-time warehouse employee
in 1973, when Mouser was essentially a
startup operation in San Diego, California.
Smith rose through the ranks, working in
nearly all departments. His leadership and
tenure has seen Mouser grow to one of the
world’s largest electronic component
distributors, with more than 2,500
employees in 27 offices worldwide and
approximately $2 billion in annual
sales.
Acquired in 2000 by Fort Worth-based
TTI, Inc., Mouser is one of the TTI
Family of Companies in the portfolio of
Berkshire Hathaway companies. Smith
has served for years as a board member
of the Electronic Components Industry
Association (ECIA), working to protect
the authorized supply chain of electronic
components. In 2011, he received the

What were the obstacles that Mouser

to overcome those obstacles?
Our greatest challenge over the last
decade has been globalization.
Learning how to establish and run a
business in different countries,
currencies, languages and cultures has
been both challenging and rewarding.
More than half of our business today is
international.
How do you maintain the balance
between the delivery of cost effective
components and latest technology?
We invest heavily in our people, and
we employ knowledgeable and
dedicated staff members who provide
timely and expert assistance to
customers. We have people who are
continually refreshing component data
in our system because it is vital for us
to receive, stock and ship products
effectively. We also have strong
partnerships with our shipping carriers.
What technical support does Mouser
Electronics provide that is needed,
both for making decisions about the
right electronic components, and
secondly for solving technical issues?
Mouser does much more than
distribute components. We give
customers the information they need
for the complete design cycle. We
stock the world’s widest selection of
components with no
minimum quantities
on most parts,
allowing innovators to
order a single part for
a prototype.
Also, we offer a wide
range of online tools
and information to
help customers find
the products and
solutions they need.
Our Technical
Resource Center
provides exclusive
information on
cutting-edge products,
design resources,
white papers and
videos to support new
levels of innovation.
We know engineers do
not want to design with older components,
so we flag these components on our
website as Not Recommended for New
Design (NRND) or End of Life (EOL), and
notify customers when obsolescence is an
issue. Plus we offer product alternatives,
even providing the level of risk on the
substitute part so customers can make
informed decisions.
In addition, we have a local Customer
Service Center in Bangalore to offer
customers across India technical support in
their local time zone. We believe this local
service is important in giving our
customers a best-in-class experience. We
have 27 offices worldwide.
How do you think technology has played
a significant role in the development and
integration of electronic components?
Now is a very exciting time. It’s a time
when many different technologies are
making it possible to connect, understand
and take informed action on what’s
happening in the physical world — all in
real time.
All the emerging technologies — such as
the Internet of Things, augmented reality,
5G, autonomous vehicles, and embedded
systems — are moving forward together,
and they are pushing the development of
other dependent technologies creating a
demand for the integration of electronic
components.
To help customers understand the
significance of these technology trends,
Mouser offers the Methods e-zine, Bench
Talk blog, e-books, and other informative
resources to our customers.
How does Mouser Electronics mitigate
the environmental concerns regarding
the disposal of e-waste? And How do
you address the concern in your
company?
We are a very forward-thinking company.
Safeguarding our environment is integral
to who we are, and we have an extensive
recycling program. In all, we will be

recycling more than 438 tons of
material this year, saving nearly 7,500
trees, more than 3 million gallons of
water and more than 1,300 cubic yards
of landfill area.
Our recycling efforts this year alone
will mean a reduction in air pollution
by more than 13 tons and a savings of
almost 1.8 million kilowatts of
electricity. We recently have received
an award for our recycling efforts from
Evergreen Paper Recycling, which
recognized us for Outstanding
Achievement in Recycling for 2019.
In your opinion, why do you think a
supplier of high-quality, precise and
long-lasting components is necessary
to drive business growth? How do
you serve the approach? What about
product shortages and lead times?
Mouser’s growth has been strong, and
we expect this growth to continue.
Because of our unique business model
and vast inventory, we benefit from
most product shortages because buyers
know they can secure parts from us. If
demand stays flat, then lead times
shouldn’t be much of an issue in early
2020.
However, with the onset of 5G
technology, we are expecting the
semiconductor industry to improve
next year, benefiting from increased
need for components for wireless,
mobile and telecommunications-related
devices.
To ensure quality and authenticity, it’s
never been more important to purchase

AS9100D/ISO9001:2015 and
accredited to the coveted SAE AS6496
standard for anti-counterfeit measures.

What is the future demand of
electronic components?
We are very optimistic, particularly for
our industry. The digital revolution is

components. There’s 5G, artificial
intelligence, Internet of Things,
robotics, industrial automation and
transportation — all propelling
demand.
With the growth of IoT, there will be
new technologies introduced from our
manufacturers around sensor
technologies; the latest in power
management; and of course,
advancements in the microprocessors.
Automotive, factory and home
automation also will continue to be
emerging markets as more
technologies are introduced to make
factories, homes and vehicles smarter
and safer.
We are expanding our global
headquarters and distribution center in
Texas, USA, to accommodate growth.
It’s a very exciting time for us.
What are Mouser Electronics’ plans
in terms of expansion and further
integration of new product launch?
Our focus is and always will be based
on customer service excellence. Our
commitment to inventory, new product
releases, and our global growth will
continue to be solid as we move
through 2020. The digital revolution is
driving demand. To meet this demand,
we are investing in automation systems
to expand capacity and efficiency in
Perfection is not

if we chase
perfection, we
can catch
excellence
our warehouse. We now have the
largest installation of Vertical Lift
Modules (VLMS) in North America, a
testament to our belief in working
smarter.
VLMs — essentially giant vertical
filing cabinets — can store tens of
thousands of electronic components.
The VLMs are expected to house up to
120,000 parts once fully online,
helping our distribution teams greatly
expedite orders for our 630,000
customers worldwide.

Networking is an integral part of all verticals in the
electronic security industry today. Software is driving

locations. IP technology in all verticals is par for the
course, and Cebex has taken this in their stride, tying
up with multiple OEMs and technology partners to add
value to their clients’ solutions.

worker's presence in the vicinity, and slow or stop
production altogether to make time for necessary input.
Another robot can be put on a schedule to speed up or slow
down based on its surroundings or the timing of small-batch
production cycles.
The beauty of IoT sensors when combined with robots is
that they are connected to a larger network. Robots thus can
be designed to collaborate with one another and work more
intelligently.
Some companies are focused on IoT mind-set. The
companies craft systems that can store and analyze their
own usage data, which is communicated to other devices.
This allows robots to consistently improve and grow over
time, becoming efficiently a powerhouse for industries.
Manufacturing automation doesn't just include brand-new
technologies. Older systems and known setups are made
more compact by integrating new controls. Thus machines
become more efficient and accessible. By improving ageold
designs and robotics hardware, businesses save money
and free up valuable factory or warehouse space.
For example some manufacturers use a compact folding

IS: How do you think technology has played a
significant role in the development and integration

Technological trends in electronic components is
driven by the technological trends in equipment. In
equipment we see a drive towards smaller sizes and
energy efficiency as can be seen in Variable Frequency
Drives and Inverter technology. This has led to the

IS: How does your company mitigate the
environmental concerns?
At Deki we generate 2 types of wastes
1) E-waste
2) Waste Due to production process
‘
As far as e-waste is concerned it is very small. LED
bulbs, tubelights, desktops, laptops etc. This is given to
the registered recycler.
As far as waste in the process is concerned, Deki has
done some unique work. The waste powder epoxy
which was earlier being sent to the landfill is now 100%
converted into bricks. This technology has been copied
by a South African company too.
We have a vision to be the global benchmark in
components. In one production line, the Inductive line,
we have already reached that level with yields in excess
of 98%. Whereas, in the other line, the Non Inductive
line, we are working to achieve yields in excess of 99%
that will also be a global benchmark
IS: What were the obstacles your company went
through and how did you overcome it?
There were absolutely no obstacles to the process as
all of us stakeholders, non-executives and the
executives on the line knew that we were working to
improve the environment.
IS: According to you, what is the future of the
electronic components industry?
The future of the electronic components industry
would be growing at an even faster pace due to the
advent of Industry 4.0-AI, IOT, Cloud Computing and
Cognitive Computing
IS: What are your company’s future plans?
Deki has been monitoring the turnover from new
products. As against a target of >15%, Deki has many
times achieved as high as 40% in some years. In 1998
we were a predominant consumer electronics
company. At that time our big customers were players
like Sony, LG, BPL, Onida, Videocon etc.
By 2015/16 we had developed into a lighting company
with about 70% share of our sale being in lighting. That
was when India used to produce about 400 mn CFL’s
every year.
From 2019/20 we will be becoming a predominant
industrial company with more than 50% share of sale in
this segment. This can only happen if you keep on
developing new products which we have been doing
successfully. In addition we have formed some JV’s in
the area of electric chargers for two and three wheeler.
The chargers are already being used in some electric
bikes operating in Bangalore and Chennai. We've
pursued a strategy of diversification, forming JVs with
competent, value based passionate partners in the
field of Electric mobility- manufacturing smart electric
chargers and drives for light electric vehicles.

company.
KRYFS Power Components Ltd is
India’s largest manufacturer of
transformer lamination and core
and the world’s second largest.
KRYFS also makes transformers
upto 10 MVA, 33 KV class, the
largest manufacturer of transformer
tanks and is engaged in Power
distribution projects (Engineering,
Procurement and Construction)
across India in 4 states. We also
provide green solar power to
several industry with PPAs with
private industry of about 3 MW on
rooftops.
KRYFS has a strategic investment
from Toyota Tsusho Corporation,
Japan, a US$ 80 Billion sister
company of Toyota Motors. KRYFS
is the only company in this sector to
have this privilege.
IS: What kind of
solutions/services/products
does your company offer at par
with the current industry
standards?
We were one of the first companies
to introduce “step lap lamination” in
India, which actually reduced the No
Load Loss of transformers by 6 to
8%, without any additional cost. We
were conferred with the Assocham
Innovation award for this innovation
Now it is an industry standard in the

ABOUT THE LEADER
Saif F Qureishi the Chief Executive Officer and Managing
Director at KRYFS, and his father F.B.Qureishi co-founded KRYFS in
December 1992 with very little capital. His father F.B.Qureishi (fondly
known as FBQ) ran a very small manufacturing unit in Mumbai, making
small electrical equipments. However the unit was not doing too well.

When Mr. Qureishi graduated from
IIM Bangalore, and decided to be
an entrepreneur, his father decided
to close down that business and
support him in the business that
Mr. Qureishi proposed to set up.
His father handled a very critical
and important portfolio in the
company, finance, and that left him
free to grow and expand the
business in the early days. His
father passed away in May 2015,
after a long and illustrious career in
this sector.
Mr. Qureishi has been associated
with various industry organizations
like IEEMA, ITMA, CII and IIMBAA
as a part of his professional journey
and has changed the lamination
industry which was dependent
mostly on secondary CRGO (raw
material) to Prime CRGO.
He claims, today, KRYFS is not only
the preferred supplier to most of
the large and prestigious
transformer manufacturers in India
and abroad, but also a preferred
customer for most of the CRGO
mills around the world. As CRGO
electrical steel is a material
manufactured by only a handful of
countries around the world, it is
imperative to have a good
relationship and a constant supply
of raw material to be successful in
this business.

IS: What fascinates you most
about the electrical industry?
What fascinates me is that the
electrical industry in totality, is
contributing to the country’s
development and progress. As one
is aware that nothing is possible
without electricity today and
therefore India is fortunate that our
electrical industry is well developed
and we have sufficient supply of
world class electrical equipments in
the country.
IS: Kindly mention the awards and
accolades?
We have received several awards
from Engineering export promotion
council for exports, for 6
consecutive years, the Asscocham
innovation award, the India’s small
giant’s awards and several other
awards which are too many to list
here.
IS: What were the major
challenges the company faced
during its growth?
Like any growing organization, the
biggest challenge is building a
robust, competent and committed
team of people. Ultimately it is the
people who make an organization.
KRYFS is a value driven company
always putting values above
business. We have our enumerated

improving). We start every meeting
at KRYFS by discussing one of the 7

IS: What are your views regarding
the current scenario of the
industry?
Currently with the various schemes
of the government like DDUGVY,
IPDS, Saubhagya, the demand for
electrical equipment is good.
However the financial situation of
most companies in the electrical
industry is not very sound. This is
because the end customer- the
state utilities- are not in good
financial health and this condition
will obviously be passed on down
the food chain.
Further intense competition from
Chinese players (who somehow
have access to supply electrical
equipments to India, while we don’t
have the same access to Chinese
market) has a severe pressure on
margins. Also the tightening of fund
availability by the banking industry
has created a cash crunch in the
electrical industry, like in all other
industries.
Thus, I would say the current
scenario in the electrical equipment
industry is satisfactory from a
demand perspective but gloomy
from a cash flow perspective.
IS: Brief us about the company’s
future perspectives?
We intend to pay greater attention
to solar rooftop business along with
energy storage (batteries) while
also exploring the applications of
IIOT (Industrial Internet of Things),
AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML
(Machine Learning) in the electrical
equipments industry to make the
equipments more predictable and
the supply more robust.
IS: Please share a quote that best
describes your company.

(always improving) best describes
KRYFS. There is no end to
improvement and if a company has
a mission of “always improving”, one
can never be obsolete or out of
business. All businesses which have

every day from Sonipat to Lajpat Rai
market in Delhi. It took time, but he
created a niche for himself and

semiconductor companies in India.
His hard work and quick
understanding of things, sharp
calculations and strategic mindset put
him in the top bracket of regional
players who know the art to position
and sell. He also had the vision to
develop the comradeship in the
industry which led him to be a
successful businessman of today’s
world with $100mill T/O today.
His son Shivang Luthra, the
Managing Director of the company,
is a young turf who is well-read and
groomed. He has similar wisdom and
foresight as his father and is the
torchbearer of REC now. His
dynamic nature has infused new
