Kaikoura projects<br />

progressing well<br />

Kaikoura’s earthquake rebuild<br />

programmeiscontinuing apace.<br />

Good progress is being made with<br />

repairs to councilfacilities,roads,<br />

bridges, and water and sewer networks,<br />

the Kaikoura DistrictCouncil says.<br />

Work was completed last year to repair<br />

the Kaikoura Memorial Hall and Cuddon<br />

building,popularly knownasthe Op<br />

Shop, while fundraising continues to<br />

build anew community pool and to<br />

repairthe Kaikoura Scout Hall.<br />

Work is alsowell­advanced on the old<br />

Mayfair theatre, which will be reborn as<br />

an arts and culturalcentre.<br />

Infrastructure repairs are on track to<br />

be completed in August.<br />

The installation of the new pressure<br />

sewer system along BeachRdisonthe<br />

homeward stretch.<br />

All pipework alongBeachRdisnow<br />

activeand wastewater is flowing.<br />

Of the 28 new pressure sewertanks to<br />

be installed, 26 are complete and private<br />

connections are beingmade.<br />

The finalconnections, commissioning<br />

and final reinstatement is being done<br />

tank after tank from Hawthorne Rd,<br />

moving north to Mill Rd.<br />

This is expected to be completed in<br />

May.<br />

As new connections are completed,the<br />

old pipes are beingdecommissioned.<br />

Bridge repairs and rebuildsare also<br />

progressing.<br />

Evansbridge,atthe southern end of Mt<br />

FyffeRd, is beingbuilt and is due to open<br />

in May,while the Gillings Lane bridge is<br />

due to open in April<br />

The WardsIIbridge, on Mt FyffeRd,<br />

northofSchoolhouse Rd, is under<br />

construction and is due to open in May,<br />

whilethe Scotts,Rorrisons and<br />

Hawthorne bridges have been<br />

completed.<br />

Minorstructural repairsto14bridges<br />

around the Kaikoura district are also<br />

progressing, with work still to be<br />

completedonsix bridges, including three<br />

in Kekerengu.<br />

District Council are encouraged to get in<br />

touch.<br />

The counciliskeentouse local<br />

contractors where possible and is<br />

creating atrade services panel of<br />

experienced builders, plumbers,<br />

electricians,painters and fencing<br />

contractors, project delivery manager<br />

Kelly LaValley says.<br />

“We’re establishing apanelof<br />

tradespeople that we can callontocarry<br />

out both plannedand reactive work.The<br />

aim is to support localcontractors and<br />

businesses while also providing agreat<br />

valueservicetoour ratepayers.”<br />

It is hoped this initiative will<br />

streamline the council’s procurement<br />

process, allowing for agreater work<br />

throughput and reduce overall costs.<br />

Contractors can expecttobeonthe<br />

trade panel for three years, with the<br />

optiontoextenditbyoneyear.<br />
