BEAR HUNT: Eddie and Ashlynn McKinnel are ready for other children to spot their teddy bears from afar.
• By Bea Gooding
TEDDY BEARS are lining
the windows of Christchurch
households as they take part in
a global movement to brighten
children’s days during the
Covid-19 lockdown.
The “We’re Going On a
Bear Hunt” inspired event
originated from London, and
thousands of New Zealanders
have already taken part. While
families take walks in their
neighbourhoods, children are
able to spot the teddy bears on
windowsills from afar; as long
as people maintain physical
distancing rules.
Edgeware resident Jennifer
McKinnel has joined the
movement because she wanted
to show her children that
“we’re all in this together.”
“We’re all in this together
and we all care about each
other. Other kids have to stay
in their houses too but they’ve
done this to make our hearts
happy. In turn, we’ve done this
to make them happy,” she said.
“Sometimes as parents we
don’t stop and smell the roses;
we race about our lives. This
lockdown, myself and my
husband are going to take the
time to reconnect as a family.”
A map of teddy bear
locations can be found on the
“We’re Not Scared - NZ Bear
Hunt” Facebook page.
Visiting a Doctor or
Hospital:
If people need to see a doctor or
other medical professional they
must phone in first.
Most consultations will
happen over the phone or by
videoconference to stop any risk
of Covid-19 spreading by personto-person
contact. If a face-toface
meeting is required, the
doctor or medical professional
will organise this. Pharmacies will
also remain open.
Public Transport:
Aeroplanes, ferries, and public
transport including trains and
buses will generally not be
available in lockdown.
Public transport will only be
available for those working in
essential services, for medical
reasons, and to get to the
supermarket.
Ferry services, road and rail
will still be available for the
transport of essential goods.
Driving in private vehicles is
allowed. Taxis and Ubers are
still available to use as long as
customers sit in the back seat.
Banks:
All key banking services will
remain available to customers
during the alert level 4 lockdown.
Cash will be available at
ATMs, payments systems
will function as usual, and
financial advice and credit
applications will be available.
People will also still be able to
conduct banking online or on the
phone. However, most branches
will be closed during the level 4
alert.
New Zealand Bankers’
Association chief executive
Roger Beaumont said during the
lockdown banks will keep some
On Tuesday, the Government
announced a six-month mortgage
holiday for those whose incomes
have been affected by Covid-19.
Rent payments:
Landlords will be unable
to raise rents on residential
properties during the lockdown
period. Finance Minister Grant
Robertson said landlords will
temporarily be unable to raise
rents in a bid to provide relief to
renters facing reduced working
hours or job losses as a result of
the Covid-19 outbreak.
Vets:
Veterinary and animal welfare
services have been classed
as an essential service by the
Government and will remain
open for essential services during
the lockdown period.
Recycling:
The city council has advised
there will be no change to its
kerbside collection service.
People should continue to put
their bins out as normal.
Maintenance:
Electricians, telecommunication
workers, plumbers, internet
providers are all classed as essential
services and will still work
on critical services. This means
that if a person has a leak or their
power goes out, they will still be
able to call someone to help.
Dental clinics and surgeries:
Dentistry has been restricted
to emergency services only. New
We can get through this together
I KNOW many of you will be
feeling frightened right now.
The enormity of the lockdown
literally.
It is reassuring to hear the
Prime Minister has said they
Crusader Jack Goodhue marries
with mullet on Waiheke Island
ALL BLACK and Crusader Jack
Goodhue has married girlfriend
Sophia Eblett on Waiheke Island.
The rugby player took to social
media to share the happy news.
“Last month I married the most
amazing woman,” he wrote on
Instagram.
“She makes me laugh and
brings out the best in me. Now
we get to spend the rest of lives
together.”
Last year Goodhue grew a
mullet, along with fellow All
Blacks including Brodie Retallick,
Sam Cane, and Beauden and
Jordie Barrett.
While Beauden Barrett’s was
gone well before his 2019 January
wedding, Goodhue kept his for
his big day.
“Brodie Retallick was my
inspiration for it [the mullet].
And then he left me in the dark
I tell you what,” he joked during
an interview with Radio Sport
Breakfast.
He announced his engagement
from Kawakawa during a break
from playing for the Crusaders
in April last year, posting to
Instagram: “Kept the training
up over the bye week with a few
The young Christchurch-based couple,
who reconnected in 2018 after both
uncertainty this is all we can
ask right now.
Although no one started this
end of March, the truth is that
a pandemic is a risk we have
planned for.
The Government has the
capability to respond to such
a crisis, with the Ministry of
Health fully prepared to take
the lead role in implementing
the pandemic plan. District
health boards are prepared for
this too.
Your council has also prepared
for emergencies, and has
been treating this seriously. We
have had an incident management
team in place since the
end of January, and like many
other agencies and businesses,
we have been preparing to
maintain essential services,
while enabling certain services
to operate remotely where they
can.
This is unlike any one of the
many crisis situations we have
had to face.
We can get through this
together, this time in spirit.
Everyone is going to have to dig
deep. We know we can do it.
NEWS 3
in brief
Five new Canterbury
Covid-19 cases
There are five new cases of
Covid-19 in Canterbury, the
Ministry of Health announced
yesterday. One of them is a
20-year-old woman who flew
from San Francisco to Auckland
on March 21 on flight NZ7 and
then Auckland to Christchurch
on March 21 on flight NZ527.
Another woman in her 20s who
flew from London via Dubai
and Sydney to Christchurch on
March 13 on flight EK006 also
tested positive for Covid-19. The
infection of a man in his 50s is
linked to an already confirmed
case in Canterbury, said the
Ministry of Health. Meanwhile,
another man in his 50s tested
positive after flying from Sydney
to Christchurch on March 13
on flight EK412. Details around
the new case of a 50-year-old
woman who has also tested
positive are yet to be released.
A female teen from Canterbury
is also listed as a probable
Covid-19 case.
EQC will continue to
process claims
The Earthquake Commission
will continue to process claims
for damage caused by natural
disasters, including reopened
Canterbury claims, despite its
offices having to shut down. All
claim lodgement channels remain
open and claims will continue to
be managed and settled, however,
all face-to-face interactions will
cease. This will cause delays
to managed repairs currently
under construction, as well as
onsite assessments and scoping.
Customers can contact the person
managing their claim if they
have their details or contact EQC
directly on 0800 326 243.
Community board
meetings cancelled
All community board and city
council committee meetings
have been cancelled in response
to the Covid-19 outbreak. A new
emergency committee, chaired
by Mayor Lianne Dalziel, has
been formed to enable decision
making throughout the
lockdown period to continue.
The real estate industry
is confident the property
market will weather the
Covid-19 storm, after it has
ravaged markets overseas.
Louis Day reports
BEFORE COVID-19 ran
rampant across Italy, the Wall
Street Journal published an
article titled “Why Is Milan’s
Real-Estate Market So in Fashion
Right Now?”
At this point, only one case of
Covid-19 had been confirmed
in Italy. Since then, more than
69,000 cases have been confirmed
and Italian real estate research
institute Scenari Immobiliari has
reported a 12 per cent decrease
in house sales
for the first two
months of this
year.
Already in
Canterbury,
more than 800
house sales have
Justin Haley
been derailed
by the Covid-19
lockdown. In most deals, the
seller of one house is the buyer
of another, and that vendor is
looking to buy another, so a lastminute
failure of just one sale can
trigger a chain reaction which
affects large numbers of people.
South Korea, which now has
more than 9000 confirmed cases
of the virus, has seen its property
market ravished.
Local business outlet Chosun-
Biz reported the country’s apartment
market saw an average of
just 458 sales per day nationwide
in the first nine days of March,
compared to 2272 per day in
December. That is an 80 per cent
decline in sales.
The decline has been even
starker in the densely populated
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
capital of Seoul, where daily sales
volumes fell by 90 per cent from
309 sales per day to just 31.
“Business is frozen as more
people are postponing moving
plans because of the coronavirus,
or are hesitant to show their
homes to strangers out of fear of
contagion,” a real estate broker in
Seoul told ChosunBiz.
In spite of the doom and gloom
overseas, Bayleys residential
and projects divisional manager
Justin Haley remained optimistic
the property landscape would
return to normality after the
lockdown.
“Through adversity, there is
always opportunity,” he said.
“In times of uncertainty you
definitely find people gravitate
towards tangible assets, we have
seen that not only through the
GFC but also after the earthquakes
sequence.”
Mike Pero real estate agent
Hayden Jones shared Mr Haley’s
optimism.
“I guess the lockdown is a real
chance for people to have a bit of
reflection and hopefully they will
come out of it ready to purchase,”
he said.
CoreLogic senior research
analyst Kelvin Davidson said
New Zealand’s property market
has historically been resilient to
most “shocks.”
“There’s only been three
material falls in property values
in the past 30-35 years. These
occurred in the early 1990s with
a five per cent fall, late 1990s
with a three per cent fall, and late
2000s with a ten per cent fall,” he
said.
“From the troughs in the first
two episodes, it took around one
year for the previous falls to be
fully reversed, but the rebound
from the global financial crisisrelated
downturn took more than
three years.
“The market also shrugged off
the SARS epidemic, for example,
without any falls in prices.”
Statistics from the Real Estate
Institute of New Zealand show
the national median house
price increased by 14.3 per cent
last month, a new record of
$640,000, up from $560,000 in
experience annual median price
increases, showing a continuation
of the price
growth we
started to see
just before
Christmas.
With strong
demand
across the
country it’s
Tom Coupe
highly likely
we’ll see these
price rises continue in March unless
the economy takes a sudden
hit from Covid-19.”
However, earlier this month,
Westpac chief economist
Dominick Stephens said the main
impact of the pandemic would be
felt in the second quarter of this
year.
“The currently rampant
housing market is likely to skid to
a halt, with price growth slowing
sharply in the June quarter,” he
said.
Canterbury University
associate professor Tom Coupe
also believed the uncertainty
around the virus in New Zealand
would slow down spending.
Rest homes stay active
CHRISTCHURCH retirement
villages and rest homes are doing
their bit to keep residents positive
through the lockdown period.
People aged more than 70 are
most at risk of Covid-19 but efforts
are being made to lift residents’
spirits and keep them occupied.
Windsorcare Shirley diversional
therapist Angela Drummond
said efforts are being made
to make life as normal as possible
for its residents under the circumstances.
“We’re just trying to go on as
Jeremy Nicoll, the chief
THE FIVE-WEEK police Eagle
helicopter trial in Christchurch
comes to an end – but has it
made us safer?
With the completion of the
trial on Friday, police say the Eagle
and the staff who work with
it will return to Auckland. As for
its future in Christchurch – that
is still undecided.
“There
will be a full
evaluation,
which will be
considered
by police on
the potential
for any future
expanded
deployment,”
said Superintendent John
Price, District Commander
Canterbury.
The evaluation is still underway
and there are no immediate
plans for the Eagle helicopter to
return. However, a police spokeswoman
said the public will notice
an increased police presence
during the lockdown period.
An online survey, conducted
by Christchurch Central MP
Duncan Webb and completed by
more than 1400 people, showed
a high level of support for the
Eagle helicopter. It found 53 per
cent of respondents thought it
was reassuring and 21 per cent
were glad it was patrolling the
city. Fifty-two per cent said the
helicopter was “an essential
part of policing strategy” and
a further 24 per cent thought it
should stay and they “trusted
police to make decisions about
how to deploy resources”. However,
12 per cent of respondents
said the helicopter was really
distressing and a further 12 per
cent viewed it as irritating.
Superintendent Price says it
has been a very busy trial period
for the Eagle.
“At the end of week four, Sunday,
15 March, there had been
305 jobs that Eagle had attended
and 210 apprehensions or people
found due to the help of the eye
in the sky.
“This translates to 69 per cent
of offenders being caught or
people being found using Eagle
as a policing tool.
Superintendent Price said right
from the first day of the trial
– February 17 – the Eagle has been
in demand. One of its first jobs was
METRO ULTRA
to help locate a stolen motorbike
and a suspicious car seen leaving a
car park of a local tavern.
“Ground staff talked to air
staff and with specific instructions
and expert guidance, the
staff identified a route where the
stolen bike and car would be
blocked in and stopped by staff.
“There was success for the
teams involved when three arrests
were made, one stolen motorbike
recovered, one stolen car
recovered and two men arrested
and charged with possession for
supply of methamphetamine.
Superintendent Price said it
only got busier from there.
“Within the first week, a traffic
incident unfolded where a car
was spotted weaving all over
and driving on the wrong side
of the road.
“It was followed by an informant,
then police, for a considerable
distance at Pigeon Bay,
which later lead to a successful
apprehension.
“Eagle monitored the vehicle
and the manner of driving
made it clear that a serious crash
would occur if the car was not
stopped.
“The crew located an
appropriate place to safely land
the helicopter and conduct a
vehicle stop. The car was stopped
without incident, but the driver,
after refusing breath and bloodalcohol
tests, was arrested.
“The 33-year-old woman will
appear on traffic charges in April.”
At the end of the second
week of the trial the Eagle
helped a police patrol unit in
pursuit of a vehicle that had left
a bar in Darfield travelling at
high speed.
“As Eagle was close, the
crew obtained long-range
observations while the patrol
Has it made us any safer?
NEWS 7
The vehicle was travelling
at high speed, in places, over
130km/h on gravel roads.
“The vehicle went into a large
rural property on a road nearby.
An occupant climbed out of the
driver’s window and opened a
gate, at which point five other
occupants exited the vehicle also
via the windows.
“Eagle crew located one man
attempting to run away, who
quickly realised he was not getting
away. The spotlight from
Eagle helped direct ground staff
to him. All six occupants were
taken into custody initially.
“The driver claimed he had failed
to stop because he thought he was
too drunk to drive. The vehicle was
not stolen or otherwise wanted,
however the male driver will appear
for failing to stop and other
traffic charges in April.”
By week three, the Eagle had
been used to track several vehicle
pursuits, taking away some of the
risk and danger these chases pose
to police and the public.
“In Timaru on 4 March just after
10am, a vehicle failed to stop
for police, but it was lost after the
patrol car abandoned the pursuit.
It was successfully located in the
car park of a tavern in town,”
said Superintendent Price.
“Two men were seen running
north from the tavern. A dog unit
tracked to the corner of Lough
and Wilson Sts.
“Once on scene, Eagle began a
search of a park which was the last
known location of the offenders.
“During the search a suspicious
vehicle was sighted on Meremere
St, with two occupants inside.
“The people inside the vehicle
at the park were not related to the
failing-to-stop job, however the
passenger was found to not only
be in possession of drugs but also
a pistol, which police thought was
linked to a rural burglary where
firearms were taken.
“The man was arrested and
charged with seven offences - two
charges of possession of a weapon
and ammunition, four charges of
possession of methamphetamine
for supply, and one charge of receives
property (believed to be a
firearm from the rural burglary).
“Eagle continued surveillance
for the offenders who had failed
to stop in the previous job, and
the suspected driver was eventually
located inside his home
address several kilometres away
by ground staff making inquiries
there. The driver was arrested for
failing to stop and also a historic
fingerprint burglary match.”
On March 4, a Subaru was seen
swerving all over the roads with
no headlights on near Darfield.
“The driver was located,
monitored and stopped with the
assistance of Eagle, and after
breath testing, was found to have
1012 micrograms of alcohol per
litre of breath. The passenger, a
known offender, was found to be
in possession of drugs.”
Just days after on March 6, a
stolen vehicle was spotted near
Marshland going 160km/h.
During this incident the Eagle
teamed up with a police dog to
track a suspect.
“Eagle arrived on scene soon
after and identified the target
vehicle driving southbound at a
reduced speed on Main North
Rd,” said Superintendent Price.
“No units were in pursuit or
close to the vehicle due to the
speed, so Eagle provided commentary
and suggested suitable
locations for ground units to set up
spikes on Pound and Ryan Rds.
“The spiking impacted all of
the vehicles tyres and the vehicle
slowed to a stop on Pound Rd.
“The driver got out and ran to a
bush line whereby Eagle provided
support to a police dog unit who
located the offender. The offender
is charged with driving while
disqualified and failing to stop.
“Eagle’s involvement helped
reduce the possibility of major
damage or injury.”
Superintendent Price said other
notable incidents involving the
Eagle included dangerous driving
incidents in central Christchurch
on March 9, New Brighton on
March 10 and Wainoni on March
13 – all of which led to arrests.
“The way these offenders were
prepared to flee from ground units
showed a distinct lack of regard for
other road users, pedestrians and
the safety of all the public,” Superintendent
Price said.
“Eagle has helped our groundbased
staff by attending a range
of events including a number
of road policing jobs. It’s been
a good tool to assist with our
front line teams working to halt
offenders in their tracks.”
How to homeschool your children
• By Nikki Preston
PARENTS PREPARING to home
school their children need to relax
and steer away from replicating a
school day, experts say.
Since Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern announced schools would
close almost immediately for most a
number of home schooling groups
have popped up on Facebook as
parents get their heads around home
schooling their children.
But New Zealand Principals’ Federation
president Perry Rush had
some strong advice for parents and
said it was crucial learning at home
was not made to be stressful.
“It’s not a time of pressure and
expectation and confrontation
around the need to get your work
done because if there is, there’s going
to be no pleasure, no enjoyment
and real no learning taking place.
“Our kids are worried and it’s our
job to make sure we can support
them, we can love them as parents
and we can create an environment
where they can get on and full their
day with languages, words, numbers
and colour and paint and construction,
activity and play and questions
and debate. These are the core ideas
at the heart of powerful learning.”
He warned parents against replicating
what they thought happened
at school and instead work with
the advice of the schools who were
quickly working to but together
online resources for when term two
started on April 14.
In the meantime they could enjoy
the newly brought forward holidays.
“Once we’ve spent a bit of time
doing that we will start to see the
pace pick up as the holidays start
to conclude and we start those
first two weeks of next term which
traditionally would have been the
school holiday period.”
Cynthia Hancox, who is a government
liaison for the National
Council of Home Educators and
home schooled for more than 20
years, said the most important
thing was parents focusing on children
feeling loved and safe.
Hancox said home schooling
implied a choice with preparation,
resources and process and as this
was not the case parents should
instead focus on doing fun things
with their children and not put
pressure on themselves.
“I would focus on reading stories,
playing games, exploring the backyard,
letting them ask questions and
helping them find answers,” she said.
“You kids aren’t going to get behind
- it just doesn’t work that way.
And if they talk to their children,
read with their children, if they explore
stuff together they are going
to be learning anyway. They may
look back on this actually as a fun
ONLINE: Ellie Sparks,
8, is using educational
resources to help with
her learning after
schools closed on
Monday.
Tips for home schooling
your children during
isolation:
1. Emotional wellbeing of child
is far more important than
their education right now
2. Let your children lead the
learning
3. Participate in focused learning
for one to two hours a day
4. Remember learning can be
done through play
5. Don’t put pressure on yourself
time when they actually got more
of mum and dad’s attention than
they would normally get.”
Hancox said compiling a list of
activities such as puzzles, reading,
games and chores for kids was a
good way of addressing their boredom
claims and quickly made them
realise how many things there were
for them to do.
Twinkl country manager Claire
Sparks, whose company provides
educational resources primarily
to teachers, said instead parents
should first put the wellbeing of
their child before any education.
Sparks said parents taking on the
teacher role should let their children
take the lead and talk about
what they want to learn.
Parents shouldn’t expect to be
teaching non-stop between 9am to
3pm and any focused learning carried
out at home could be achieved
within one to two hours, she said.
“Everything else should be learning
through play, learning through
helping with baking, helping with
some chores. Snuggling together
and reading.”
Parents also did not need to be doing
hands-on teaching the entire time
and could set up children with online
resources to do independently.
There was a range of resource
available online and her own
company Twinkl was offering a
month’s free access using the code
the Covid-19 outbreak.
His artwork, inspired
A NEW pen pal initiative has
been set up in Christchurch for
the elderly in rest homes in a bid
to combat loneliness during the
lockdown.
As of this week, due to the
country-wide Covid-19 lockdown,
rest homes are unable to
accept visitors – including family
members.
Papanui resident Vicki-Anne
Parker, who helps run the “NZ
Gifts of Love and Strength” Facebook
page, organised the pen pal
system to help bring a smile to
the faces of those feeling lonely in
rest homes.
“I saw a post on Facebook and
realised how much joy kids get
out of doing art, and how lonely
a lot of people are in rest homes
especially since the earthquakes,”
she said.
“To be able to match someone in
a rest home with someone in the
community who might not have
grandparents is very special.”
The NZ Gifts of Love Facebook
page was created in response
to the March 15, 2019 mosque
attacks, and primarily assist
those who are most in need. The
LOVE: The NZ Gifts of Love and Strength charity started a
pen pal initiative for elderly in rest homes to help combat
loneliness during the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown.
charity, based in New Brighton,
has helped people who have had
house fires, illnesses and car
crashes. In the last two weeks,
they helped feed 100 children per
day from South New Brighton
School while the site was closed
due to a fire.
Poems, stories, pictures and
Akira Hirasawa is passionate about the trombone
and has played the instrument since he was 13. In
intermediate school in his birth country of Japan,
he initially started out playing the tuba and the
following year migrated to the trombone.
Akira has never looked back from his teen years as
his passion for the brass instrument grew. Over the
decades his dedication to the trombone has never
waned and he is ever-enthusiastic about sharing his
love of the brass horn with others.
Meet Akira
Your professional life has been split between two
very different industries. Tell us about them.
Actually, my profession as an electronics engineer is
much more robust than music.
After obtaining my Master’s Degree of Engineering,
I joined Panasonic as a development engineer
and became the technological liaison between
Panasonic and MCA, which was the entertainment
conglomeration holding Universal Pictures,
Universal Studios and Universal Music Group. One
of the projects I was in charge of was the Panasonic
Pavilion which was located on the Universal
CityWalk in Universal Studios Hollywood. The
original concept was drawn up by the renowned
film director, Steven Spielberg. This was a fantastic
and engaging experience.
After quitting Panasonic in Japan, I immigrated to
NZ in 2003 with my wife and 7-year-old daughter
for the challenge of a whole new life.
Music has always been
in the picture
I love playing the trombone and have played many
times in the past for the Christchurch Symphony
Orchestra and was a member of the Woolston Brass
for ten years, as well as being involved with local
musical societies, bands, other orchestras, and
churches or ensemble groups.
I have been a trombone tutor at the Christchurch
School of Music for the past 6 years as well as
giving private lessons, as I enjoy teaching the
instrument to students of all ages.
I have recorded several CDs as a member of
Woolston Brass and one with CSO. The Woolston
Brass has won New Zealand’s National Brass Band
Championships six times while I was in the band.
I also play the flute, saxophone, French horn and
trumpet.
Any advice to our readers?
I encourage people of any age, especially over
fifty to try their hand at learning how to play the
trombone. I have several adult students and some
of them started the trombone after 60.
A common misconception is that people need to
have decent breathing capacities in order to start
learning, but this isn’t the case. One’s breathing
capacity increases naturally through practice, and
I personally believe in and have seen the health
benefits for brass students.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE
A WEEK MAKES IN THE
PANDEMIC WORLD
AM I MAKING
MYSELF GO DEAF
UNKNOWINGLY?
NZ Health IT chief executive Scott Arrol
says, “What a difference a week makes in
the current coronavirus world, as we move
into a country wide lockdown.
“The key boost for tech health was
contained in the government’s economic
package last week with a $20 million
for telehealth to support the scaling
up of the capacity for general practice
and community health providers to use
technology to conduct consultations
online, he says.
“This triggered a week of immense activity
across the sector with, among a number of
initiatives, was the news that GPs across
the country are rapidly moving to conduct
most of their consultations online using
virtual technology including phone, email
and video consults.
“This is signalling one of the biggest shifts
we’ve seen in New Zealand’s primary
healthcare sector in the way services are
provided. I really applaud the way in
which everyone in the sector has taken up
this challenge.
“This is almost a zero to hundred mile
an hour shift within the week following a
number of years of advocating for the use
of virtual healthcare.
“While the very fight against COVID-19
has created the burning platform needed
to bring virtual healthcare to the fore, this
move will bring about a whole new way
of care delivery for New Zealanders that
will last long past the current pandemic
emergency situation.
“By its very nature, virtual healthcare
intrinsically links healthcare, technology
and people. It can’t be done without all
three gelling together and these have to be
supported by the appropriate funding and
business models.
“So, then we have a situation that will take
pressure away from the general practice’s
waiting rooms and safely provide online
triaging and face-to-face consultations
albeit via a mobile device, laptop or
computer monitor.”
“We’re very fortunate to have a strong
digital health sector in New Zealand with
highly capable and innovative providers
of software solutions that will enable
the delivery of virtual healthcare in the
coming days and weeks.
“It’s going to be fascinating to see how this
all rolls out and NZHIT will be offering
all it can do to help and support the public
health service system.”
March was Hearing Awareness Month and Hearing New
Zealand hosted their first annual silent tea party. The
organisation shared information highlighting everyday
circumstances people might not be aware of which could
affect their hearing and irreversible hearing loss or damage.
They did a demonstration with 3 volunteers lining up behind
each other with a blender in front of the first volunteer and
turned it on. The decibel reading was over the amount of safe
listening and could potentially affect hearing after a short
time. The other volunteers noise level lessened with distance,
but the introduction of noise levels of kitchen appliances such
as juicers and coffee makers was eye opening.
We discussed the noise levels of concerts, construction sites,
patrons who work in cafés and listening to loud music and the
impact on the ear drum when wearing ear buds.
How does hearing work?
Sound waves enter the ear, move down the ear canal, and hit
the eardrum, which creates vibration. The vibrations from
the eardrum pass to three bones known as the ossicles in the
middle ear. These ossicles amplify the vibrations, which are
then picked up by small hair-like cells in the cochlea.
These cells move as the vibrations hit them. Then the
movement data is sent through the auditory nerve to the
brain and the brain processes the data, which a person with
functional hearing will interpret as sound.
What to do? Protect your ears. Once hearing is damaged or
lost, there’s no going back.
LAW
LIVING
LIFE
PUZZLES
REVERSE
MORTGAGES
The dream of owning your own home is very much part of
the kiwi identity, and it was previously an achievable goal.
It’s no surprise then that the majority of New Zealanders
over 65 own their own home. Part of this reality is that,
for many people, the family home is their main asset and
their wealth is tied up in it. A high proportion rely on
Government Superannuation for their income and can run
into financial worries when unexpected expenses arise.
An option for consideration for those who are asset rich
but cash poor is a Reverse Mortgage (also known as a home
equity release mortgage). A Reverse Mortgage is a loan
that is secured by a mortgage over your home. It differs
from a regular mortgage in that there are no mandatory
repayments during the lifetime of the loan. Instead, the
capital and interest owing builds up as a debt against the
equity in your house. The loan ends on either the death of
the borrower (or both borrowers in the case of a couple) or
when the house over which the mortgage has been granted
is vacated by the borrower moving into permanent care or
sold. Reverse Mortgages also have a minimum age criteria:
you must be at least 60 years old before you can apply for
one.
Reverse Mortgages sound like a good option - and they
can be. However, careful thought and robust discussion
should be had before one makes the decision to take out
such a loan. You can use the money for anything you
want but it’s important to explore all options available to
you if you find yourself needing money to cover medical
bills, maintenance costs and those other unexpected costs
that can pop up out of the blue. We recommend that you
involve your family in the discussion, and that you consider
the full obligations and consequences under the loan. You
should make sure you understand how the interest rate is
3/20/2020
determined, any extra obligations you
may have in relation to maintaining
the property, and the impact a Reverse
Mortgage can have on your estate (to
list a few considerations). You should
also consider the risk that the value of
your property does not grow as quickly
as expected, or even that the property
value drops while the loan balance
continues to grow.
HOW THE CORONAVIRUS
COULD IMPACT NZ’S
FINANCIAL SECTOR
A leading New Zealand fintech experts says the
coronavirus is significantly affecting the Kiwi
financial sector and the economy.
FintechNZ general manager James Brown says
the impact has begun, but he is not sure for how
long.
“It could grow demand for certain insurance
types. The virus has resulted in more awareness
of insurance and could increase demand for
health and life coverage, as well as business
interruption and sport, music, conference event
cancellation coverage,” Brown says.
“Insurances companies are often cautious in
what they cover and most don’t include things
like a pandemic, certain infectious diseases so
the virus should not harm these companies.
“For some insurance companies, the virus could
be a good thing. Health and life insurance could
grow with more people looking to get cover.
Insurance for event cancellation will be on the
rise.
“We are an island nation, so we have some
advantages. Technology will keep us connected,
secure and sensitive conversations will continue
to take place.
“Companies with digital products will do really
well during this time. Are banks prepared to
support their customers that don’t use digital
products or have smartphones?
“Stock markets have been fidgety in the past
few weeks, with some New Zealand analysts
suggesting or talking about a recession. In the
US, the Federal Reserve has already applied an
emergency rate cut, which is the biggest since in
the US since the global financial crisis (GFC).
“A leading global investor Goldman Sachs
will from today divide its 38,000-plus global
workforce between offices, back-up sites and
home in response to deal with the virus.
“This comes hard on the heels of rival
JPMorgan announcing similar measures to
protect staff from Covid-19.
“In New Zealand we’re seeing the virtual world
of business growing rather than the in person
handshake protocols. COVID-19 could easily
lead to re-thinking work and business.
“Many of the big fintech companies, such as
Xero, Montoux, Vend and TSG will be making
smart decisions. Today, we could say the Future
of Work is here and COVID-19 is accelerating
and forcing the coming together of digital and
physical assets,” Brown says.
FintechNZ is part of the NZTech Alliance
which represents more than 1000 businesses
and organisations.
STEPS TO BUILDING
TRUSTWORTHY AI IN AOTEAROA
The AI Forum of New Zealand today published a set
of guiding principles to help build public trust in the
development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) across New
Zealand.
The Artificial Intelligence Forum of New Zealand (AI Forum)
is a purpose-driven, not-for-profit, non-governmental
organisation (NGO) that is funded by members and was
founded in 2017.
The AI Forum brings together New Zealand’s community
of artificial intelligence technology innovators, end
users, investor groups, regulators, researchers, educators,
entrepreneurs and interested public to work together to find
ways to use AI to help enable a prosperous, inclusive and
thriving future for our nation.
Forum executive director Emma Naji says, “the guiding
principles provide overarching high-level guidance for anyone
involved in designing or developing AI and are a first step in
helping New Zealanders have access to trustworthy AI.
“We hope these principles will prompt AI stakeholders to start
thinking about how to incorporate processes and measures to
work towards ethical development of AI.
“We want to raise awareness that ethical and legal issues need
to be identified and addressed as early as possible. AI does
not exist in a legal void. Existing laws and regulations such as
privacy, human rights and liability all apply, but people tend to
forget that in the face of AI.
“Our government has a comprehensive role to play in
ensuring AI serves the long-term public good as our
community welcomes the announcement of the Digital
Council, an independent ministerial advisory group designed
to advise government from a whole-of-society perspective
ensuring New Zealanders can take advantage of the
opportunity and benefits AI has to offer.” Naji says.
How to
self-isolate
if you’re 70+
If you’re over 70 years of age, you should stay at
home (self-isolate) as a precaution. It’s a good idea
to organise a plan of action by reaching out to family,
friends and neighbours.
For more advice go to Covid19.govt.nz
Continue enjoying physical exercise – like gardening
– and ensure you have a good supply of food and
medication. As a helping hand, the Government has
doubled the Winter Energy Payment.
How to
support
anyone 70+
It’s really important that we all support people aged 70+ in our
communities during this challenging time. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Stay at least 1 metre away.
2. Wave or nod instead of shaking hands.
3. Keep visits short (under 15 minutes).
4. Talk to neighbours over the fence.
5. Offer to pick up supplies and medicine.
6. Offer to help them connect in ways other
than in person, like video chat.
7. Send videos or pictures of children
rather than taking them to visit in person.
Bulking up mince helps it go further
• By Ian Knott
LOCKDOWN RECIPES
In these trying times, there
are many ways you can
make your grocery spend
last a bit longer. Mince is
a family staple that can
be used in a myriad of
ways – but bulking it up
with other ingredients
can make smaller trays of
mince feed more people
and larger ones spread
over a couple of meals
THESE ADDITIONS will bulk
out your mince while adding
flavour and nutrients to the dish.
Not every addition will suit every
meal – so use your discretion.
Bread/cracker crumbs:
Dry or fresh breadcrumbs and
cracker crumbs can add body
and binder to minced meals that
need to keep their shape, like
meatballs, burgers and rissoles.
Cooked Rice:
If you’re gluten intolerant, don’t
have bread or crackers on hand or
just don’t want to use them, then
mixing cooked rice of any variety
into shaped mince meals can bulk
it out too.
It helps if the rice was cooked
the previous day and has dried
out overnight in the fridge so it
can adequately soak up flavours
and juices while not causing the
mixture to become soggy.
Hard vegetables:
Things like carrots, turnips,
celery etc. Basically any vegetables
that need a decent bit of cooking
to get them softened up. Pumpkin
and kumera could be used also,
though if diced small enough
they cook very quickly.
Grate, finely dice or blitz hard
veg in a food processor and sweat
out excess liquid in a pan before
you add your meat. This works
great for meat sauces, lasagnes and
pie fillings. Thick and saucy things
benefit from aromatic vegetables
that add flavour and nutrition while
bulking out the meat.
Soft vegetables:
Zucchini, eggplant, capsicum,
squash, mushrooms, cabbage,
broccoli and other soft vegetables
can be finely diced, shredded
or sliced to add bulk and
flavour. Zucchini, eggplant and
mushrooms are great at soaking
up flavours.
If you need to hide their
existence from little ones who
don’t like veg, try chopping or
processing them as finely as
possible and adding them early in
the cooking process so that they
get a chance to caramelise and
develop colour and flavour.
Mashed potato:
Mix through some mashed
potato in shaped mince dishes
or layer it in baked dishes like
moussaka, lasagne and pies. Make
the potato layer of a shepherd’s
pie extra thick, or if you are
making a pastry topped pie,
BULKING UP:
There are many
ingredients you
can add to mince
to make it go
further and also
add nutritional
value.
you could put a layer of mashed
potato under the pastry to bulk
out the meat filling.
Cheese:
While cheese is at the pricier
end of ingredients for bulking,
some crumbled feta, ricotta,
cream cheese, diced halloumi or
mozzarella could extend shaped
mince meals like burgers and
meatballs.
Lentils:
Already soaked and cooked
lentils can be added to any kind
of mince dish as an extender.
If you’re combing lentils into
meatballs, burgers or rissoles,
consider adding additional
ingredients like eggs or
breadcrumbs as binding. Lentils
During the lockdown
The Star will bring
readers recipes and tips
to make economical
but very tasty meals.
If you have any tips
or recipes to make
economical meals and
help groceries go further
during lockdown, share
them with The Star and
by emailing newsroom@
starmedia.kiwi – photos
are welcome but not
necessary. Please include
your name and suburb.
are great for extending a meat
sauce and a chilli too.
Beans or chickpeas:
Cooked or canned beans or
chickpeas are particularly good
for bulking out shepherd’s pie
fillings, chilli, meat sauce for
lasagna or spaghetti bolognese.
They can also bulk out burgers
or meatballs but may need some
additional ingredients to keep the
mixture together when shaping.
Whole grains:
Things like buckwheat, quinoa
and barley as well as other grains
can bulk out mince dishes.
Whether you add the uncooked
grains with the mince when
you make sauces and stews
or add already cooked grains
to meatballs, grains add nutty
flavour, texture and bulk.
on long and successful career
• By Gordon Findlater
Canterbury’s longestserving
cricketer called
stumps on an 18-yearcareer
last week. Sports
reporter Gordon Findlater
caught up with all-rounder
Andrew Ellis to reflect
on his career and how
he hopes to help more
athletes succeed in his
next journey.
ANDREW ELLIS’ career in
red and black started with him
breaking a Canterbury record.
The record for the side’s largest
first-class 9th wicket partnership
of 115 with Gareth Hopkins was
just scratching the surface.
The all-rounder has gone
on to entrench his name in
Canterbury’s cricket history
while becoming just the second
player in New Zealand domestic
cricket to play more than 100
games in each format – including
117 T20 matches, 109 List A
matches, and 105 first-class
matches.
Growing up in Dallington,
Ellis played his youth cricket
for East Shirley and was one of
many players to come through
under the guidance of coach Bill
Duncan. Sport was a constant
in his life from an early age.
His father Malcolm Ellis hosted
an afternoon sports show on
Newstalk ZB for two decades.
“I used to get around with him
on a Saturday afternoon. At that
time, before he did it from the
studio, he would be around all
the grounds reporting all the
club sport,” said Ellis.
The right-arm paceman played
first XI cricket at Shirley Boys’
High School and made a natural
transition to senior cricket with
Easts. However, at the time
cricket wasn’t the only sport he
was playing at a premier club
level. During the winter Ellis
played football for Rangers.
Before dedicating himself purely
to cricket Ellis made three
national league appearances for
Canterbury United in 2003. The
team at the time featured Danny
Halligan as a player-coach and
Ben Sigmund.
His debut for Canterbury
United came just months after
his first-class cricket debut
against Auckland at Colin
Maiden Oval in February 2003.
Ellis remembers claiming his
first wicket by dismissing Tim
McIntosh LBW. However, he says
his first scalp should have been
one of the big names in cricket –
Mark Richardson.
“He [Richardson] was stone
dead in front, but was given not
out. Then I think Tim McIntosh
wore the brunt of an umpiring
make-up call. He was probably
wearing his black helmet at the
time, so the umpires were a bit
STALWART: Andrew Ellis represented Canterbury 331 times
across all three formats during his 18-year professional
career.
reluctant to stick their finger up.”
Later in the match, Ellis and
wicket-keeper Gareth Hopkins
combined for a record ninthwicket
partnership of 115.
Batting at No 10 at the time,
Ellis was a far different batsman
to the explosive middle-order
threat he became later in his
career.
“I was pretty cautious back
then. I had a good defence, but
lacked the audacity to go outside
of that.”
His rise to become a genuine
all-rounder involved switching
club and changing his mindset
to become more aggressive. Ellis
also says a successful surgery
in 2010 after a long battle with
stress fractures in his back played
a major role in the development
of his game.
“At East Shirley I was batting
five or six, but would hardly
get a bat because we were so
dominant. We had the Papps
brothers opening the batting,
Neil Broom and the Pawson
brothers. Because we were so
dominant as a team I’d come
in with 10 overs to go, so I
made the tough call to move
clubs and open the batting,”
said Ellis.
“There was a lot of work I had
to do on the mental side of it.
That probably culminated in
having surgery, which got my
back sorted and gave me a real
security in myself
“I always thought I needed to
have this mental restriction on
myself to score runs. Things just
grew from there. Bob Carter
played a big part in that by
basically forcing me to take risks
and push me out of my comfort
zone mentally.
“The technical stuff was there
because I had done so much
work, but it was those coaches
and Bob’s words around ‘if you
don’t those risks and take this
approach then you won’t make
it, there’s no chance of success’.
When it was laid down black
and white like that for me I knew
what I had to do and it sort of
snowballed.”
The new approach saw Ellis
go onto score nine first-class
centuries. Impressive displays
at provincial level also saw him
represent New Zealand in 15
one-day-internationals and
five T20 internationals in 2012
and 2013. However, Ellis says
the biggest highlights of his
career came in his five Plunket
Shield four-day title-winning
campaigns with Canterbury
in 2007/08, 2010/11, 2013/14,
2014/15 and 2016/17.
THE NUMBERS:
First-class: 5221 runs at an average of of 35.17
and 249 wickets at an average of 29.78.
List A: 2708 runs at an average of 31.85
and 154 wickets at an average of 29.84.
T20: 1258 runs at an average of 17.00
and 131 wickets at an average of 22.93.
BIG STAGE: Ellis represented New Zealand in 15 one-dayinternationals
and five T20 internationals in 2012 and 2013.
“Nothing can replace the
feeling of working over a six
month season. Getting to the end
and winning that Plunket Shield
was the pinnacle. That was the
vindication of all that work. The
four-day game was always the
true test of cricket – mentally,
technically and the whole piece
as a person. To come out with
five of those titles in a career is a
huge highlight.”
Arguably the most impressive
of the lot came in 2010/11.
Following the February 22
earthquake, the side still had
six Plunket Shield matches
remaining in their season. The
side made the decision to soldier
on and went undefeated for the
remainder of the campaign.
“I don’t know how we did it.
Like everyone at that time we
were in a daze just trying to work
out what was happening in our
own personal world and trying
to play cricket. We were out there
like everyone else shovelling
liquefaction,” said Ellis
“I’m immensely proud of what
that team achieved during that
time. I know everyone that was
a part of that probably changed
forever, in how they saw their
cricket and the team, probably in
a positive way.
“We realised what resilience
was. We had that successful
period in four-day cricket after
that. It was the start and who
knows, it may have been a huge
part of that. We knew that we
could withstand any challenge
that was thrown at us as a team
after that. There were guys like
Toddy [Todd Astle] and Fults
[Peter Fulton] who were the
spine of the team and each had
different earthquake experiences,
but we were able to take that
resilience for guys that came
in and out of the team and let
them know this is the way we do
things in Canterbury and this is
the way we play our cricket. That
culminated in a pretty successful
four-day team.”
After making the decision
to pull stumps on his playing
career, Ellis will remain
heavily involved with sport
in his new role as the regional
manager for Christchurch at
High Performance Sport New
Zealand. After previously trying
his hand at sales he admits the
transition to life after cricket has
come with its challenges.
“It was challenging to be
honest and harder than I
thought it was going to be from
a logistical point of view as
well as a mental point of view,
but it was an inevitable time,”
he said.
“You’ve got to find a job that
gives you that same sense of
fulfillment and that same sense
of pushing yourself, and that’s
pretty tough to do. It’s not just
the food on the table, but how do
I find a job I loved as much as my
previous job.”
With cricket now on the back
burner, Ellis also confirmed a
return to the football pitch is a
very high possibility sometime
in the future.

Family-friendly SUV at a bargain price
THERE’S NO doubt sport utility
vehicles are beneficial to families.
Their practicality and often the
option of seven seats make them
particularly appealing for those
with children in tow.
However, as is often the case,
those who would benefit most
from an SUV aren’t in a position
financially to own one, especially
those that are new off the
showroom floor.
Enter, Kia’s completely new
compact, five-seat SUV, the Seltos.
It has just launched here and in
entry-level LX form lists with a
very special price – $25,990. To my
way of thinking, that is amazing
value for a quality, state-of-the-art
vehicle that will suit a young family.
Of course the Seltos is available
in four other specifications, there’s
even a four-wheel-drive model
which tops the range at $46,990.
In-between, the other variants list
at $35,990, $37,990 and $42,990.
Before you think the base
model car lacks on kit, it doesn’t.
Sure there aren’t all the high-tech
features of its stablemates, but there
is enough specification to provide
years of fulfilling motoring.
Even though Kia calls the Seltos
compact, it’s not really. Sure at
4.4m it isn’t large, but it does make
good use of its proportions with
high comfort levels, it has plenty
of leg and head room in the rear
passenger compartment. That area
is not compromised by a healthy
load space – 468-litres, expanding
to 1428-litres with the rear seats
folded flat. I rate the load space on
any vehicle as to how well it houses
the rather large cricket gear bag I
use to coach a year 8 Sydenham
team. In the case of the Seltos there
was ample room to spare, and it has
an easy load height.
The LX variant gets cloth
trim and that would far be my
preference, there are no design
surprises, the trim is fairly
conservative but you get just
enough goodies that go with the
pleasure of buying a new car,
some of the functions are operable
through a central screen display.
Even though the Seltos has yet
to be crash tested, it would be
expected to meet the five-star
Australasian New Car Assessment
Program safety rating.
In LX form the Seltos is powered
by a 2-litre, naturally-aspirated
four-cylinder petrol engine, that’s
opposed to a 1.6-litre turbocharged
unit fitted to the range-topping
four-wheel-drive Limited.
I’d also opt for the base engine,
it is a very sweet unit, quiet and
smooth. Drive is channelled
through the latest generation
continuously variable transmission
which is described by Kia as
behaving like a traditional
automatic transmission, acting as
if it has regular gear changes. I’m
VERSATILE: Generous load area doesn’t compromise rear
seat space.
KIA SELTOS: Base model kick-starts extensive range, including a four-wheel-drive variant.
quite excited about this driveline,
you would hardly pick a CVT
is transmitting power, while the
seamless way it operates enhances
driveline smoothness.
Power is channelled through
the front wheels only, yet the
entire drive and chassis setup
has benefited from a lot of
development catering for the
special needs of Australasian
roads. The suspension is a good
compromise of what is needed
for occupant comfort, but there is
balance and control when highcountry
corners are presented.
Interestingly, the LX grade model
gets just 16in wheels against 17in
and 18in rims of higher grade
variants. However, the benefit in
LX grade is super quiet motion and
a hugely smooth ride. The highprofile
Kumho tyres (205/60)have
a lot of sidewall flex, consequently,
they just soak up the big bumps
that are still a problem on
Christchurch roads.
I took the test car up and down
the twists and turns out of the
Waimakariri River gorge. Steerage
is relatively precise; there would
probably be greater accuracy in
its stablemates, but there is good
feedback as to what the tyres are
doing, and gravitational movement
was minimised even though it is
1.6m tall, there is a bit height in
the Seltos. I enjoyed the way the
test car behaved in a corner, and
to my way of thinking the wheel/
• Price – Kia Seltos LX,
$25,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4370mm; width, 1800mm;
height, 1615mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1999cc, 110kW,
180Nm, continuously
variable automatic.
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9.3sec
• Fuel usage – 6.8l/100km
tyre set-up in the LX is far from
compromised. I like entry-level kit
and the Seltos in this form presents
no surprises.
Kia rates the engine with 110kW
and 180Nm, if these figures look
familiar that’s because it is much
the same engine that powers
Cerato and Sportage from the Kia
stable.
Maximum torque is available
from 4500rpm and peak power
is reached at 6200rpm. They are
quite high in the rev band and you
could be forgiven for thinking it’s
an engine which likes to have the
revs up. However, one of the other
benefits of CVT is that there are no
gaps to fill between gearing. That
being the case, the engine works
the mid-range, it isn’t flighty and
feels strong beneath the throttle
pedal.
Of course, there is a sport mode
if you wish to have the engine
working harder but I used normal
mode most of the time I was in
the evaluation car and it is most
suitable in all situations. There is
also an eco mode if you want to
make maximum use of your tank
of fuel. To me it’s a bit numbing but
if you drive casually then eco will
earn you fuel-saving benefits.
On that subject, Kia claims a
6.8l/100km combined cycle fuel
usage average. That’s a healthy
figure for an SUV which has a kerb
weight extending to 1700kg. That
being the case, I couldn’t replicate
Kia’s figures, however, when I took
the test car back to the dealership
it was showing a respectable
8.8l/100km average, helped by
a 5l/100km figure showing at a
steady 100km/h, the engine turning
over at 1800rpm in the tallest part
of the gearing.
I always like it when new cars
land. Kia is capitalising on the
worldwide demand for SUVs, its
range is extensive and my only
concern would be if the Seltos
cannibalises sales from Kia’s own
Niro and Sportage.
At its price the Seltos is a very
desirable proposition, I just hope
that those who would benefit
from owning an SUV recognise its
value.
If that is not tempting in itself,
bear in mind the Seltos is sold with
a five-year/100,000km warranty.
Peace of mind really.
WITH A lack of any live sport
to watch during the coronavirus
outbreak, those of us with a
Sky Sport subscription have
been given a back catalogue of
famous sporting moments from
yesteryear to enjoy.
The past week has seen us
sport nuts relive the likes of
2000s cricket battler Jamie How
scoring his only international
hundred during a famous draw
with the Poms in a pre-super
over era, and the All Blacks
domination of the 2005 Lions
Tour.
While many of you have likely
enjoyed reliving famous victories
and sporting drama that went
down to the wire, I can’t help but
feel this only adds to the frustration
of not being able to watch
live sport.
What we need is a channel
dedicated to those games we
wished we’d never attended
or watched for one reason or
another. Here’s my list of famous
matches that will have you not
missing sport as much as you
currently do.
1999 Netball World Cup
final: As a nation our biggest
sporting grudge is arguably
English referee Wayne Barnes.
However, when it comes to a
grudge against one of our own
it’s hard to argue against Donna
Loffhagen.
The final against Australia is
best remembered in Canterbury
for one of our own blowing it
right at the end. Many netball
supporters in New Zealand still
refuse to forgive the goal shooter
for the miss which cost the Silver
Ferns their first world title.
As the saying goes, the further
south you go in New Zealand the
nicer the people get. Hopefully
that rings true for Loffhagen who
now lives in the deep south and
goes by her married name.
David Tua v Shane Cameron:
Duco Events have become professionals
at making punters feel
like they haven’t got value for
money. Many will reference the
2019 Black Clash T20 cricket
match between former cricketers
and current rugby players at
Hagley Oval which set you back
$60 to get in the gate. However,
their ‘finest’ moment came 10
years earlier when they billed
a fight between David Tua and
Shane Cameron as ‘The Fight of
the Century’.
For those that booked the
fight, the cost to fight ratio is still
a sore subject, as Cameron was
rocked early and never looked
a chance of recovering before
being knocked out by Tua 20
seconds into the second round.
The fog final: In 2006 the
Hurricanes must have felt like
many of us feel in 2020. If they
were beginning to feel like it
was their year they were about
to be bought back to reality by a
killer that couldn’t be seen by the
naked eye – the Crusaders.
Although the final adds to
the great Crusaders legacy of 10
Super Rugby titles, they may as
well reduce the number to nine
as to this day nobody managed
to watch the whole game.
UC Championship stalemate:
What should have been the
greatest first XV schoolboy rugby
final ever witnessed quickly became
a fizzer of a final due to an
absurd World Rugby rule. With
the scores locked at 18-18 in the
INFAMOUS: Donna Loffhagen is
distraught after the 1999 Netball World
Cup, and the historic ‘fog final’ of the
2006 Super Rugby competition.
2018 UC Championship final
between traditional rivals Christ’s
College and Christchurch Boys’
High School, at full-time everybody
watching was getting excited
about the prospect of extra time.
But they were quickly left confused
and disappointed as CBHS
celebrated. It was announced
that they had won the match on
an under-19 IRB rule that states
no under-19 game will have
extra-time and the winner will
be decided by who scored the
most tries.
Honourable mentions: Any
Crusaders match from 1996,
Formula E, 1992 Cricket World
Cup semi-final, All Whites v
Mexico 2013.
