Saves the life of a
kidnapping victim
Last month, the actions of Trooper
Matthew A. Perez of the Ohio State Highway
Patrol’s West Jefferson Post saved
the life of a kidnapping victim. On March
27, the post presented Perez with a certificate
of recognition.
On Feb. 26, a frantic 911 caller reported
that her daughter’s ex-boyfriend
had fired shots into her Columbus home
and kidnapped her daughter at gunpoint.
She reported that the suspect forced her
daughter into a blue Pontiac sedan and
said he was going to kill her.
A ping was initiated on the suspect’s
phone. The phone pinged in Madison
County with a 2,900-meter radius, making
it difficult to locate the suspect and victim.
Officers, troopers and deputies from several
Madison County agencies assisted the
Columbus Division of Police with searching
for the vehicle.
Perez was among the law enforcement
personnel who was briefed on the situation.
He began searching for the vehicle.
At about 4:38 a.m., he located the Pontiac
on State Route 142, east of Spring Valley
Road. The vehicle was stopped in the roadway,
and the suspect and victim were inside.
Due to the imminent risk of death
posed by the suspect, Perez was unable to
wait for backup and immediately took the
suspect into custody. The victim was injured,
and a loaded handgun was found
near the driver’s seat.
“Trooper Perez acted with courage and
valor and risked his own safety to immediately
take an armed, homicidal suspect
into custody,” wrote Lt. Nick Konves,
watch commander with the Columbus Division
of Police, in a commendation letter.
“I have no doubt that the victim was
within minutes of being murdered on a remote
road in Madison County. Trooper
Perez’s actions undoubtedly saved this victim’s life.”
Perez joined the Highway Patrol in 2017. Prior
to his current assignment in West Jefferson, he
served at the Highway Patrol’s Springfield post.
Originally from Hilliard, he is a London High School
ere’s still time to
vote, but not much
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Time is tight, but Ohioans who have
not already cast ballots in the primary
election can still do so by mail.
On March 25, the Ohio General Assembly
passed House Bill 197, which
includes several measures designed to
provide emergency relief during the
coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
One of those measures sets April 28,
2020, as the final day of Ohio’s primary
election, which was originally scheduled
for March 17.
For the vast majority of voters, the
only option for this primary election is
to vote by absentee ballot through the
mail. (House Bill 197 limits in-person
voting to individuals with qualifying
disabilities and those who do not have
a home mailing address, and will take
place only on April 28 and only at board
of elections vote centers. No precinct
polling locations will be open.)
Voting by mail requires voters to fill
out and return an absentee ballot application
before a board of elections can
mail out the actual ballot, which then
needs to be filled out and postmarked
by April 27 or hand-delivered to the
board of elections by 7:30 p.m. April 28.
“We’re up against a tight deadline,”
said Tim Ward, director of the Madison
County Board of Elections (BOE).
Ward recommends that voters go to
the board’s website, boe.ohio.gov/madison/,
where they can complete and print
out an absentee ballot application. Instructions
can be found by scrolling
down the home page to the section titled
“Absentee Ballot Deadline.”
Other options for requesting an absentee
ballot include: stopping by the
BOE office to pick up a form (copies can
be found in a folder hanging outside on
the front door); or sending an email to
electionboard@co.madison.oh.us (include
your name, mailing address, contact
information and number of applications
needed). Anyone who does not
have a printer or access to email can
call the office at (740) 852-9424 and
leave a detailed message.
Applications must be mailed or
dropped off at the board office: 1423
State Rte. 38, SE, London, OH 43140.
They cannot be sent by email.
Absentee ballots must be requested
by April 25. Completed absentee ballots
must be postmarked by April 27 and received
by May 8 or hand-delivered to
the dropbox at the back of the BOE office
by 7:30 p.m. April 28.
Ward asks that those filling out an
absentee ballot application pay close attention
to Box 6. Where it asks for the
date of the election, they should write
“March 17, 2020.” They should check
the box marked “Primary.” Those who
check the “Political party ballot” box
must also write in the name of the political
party.
“That is critical,” Ward said of writing
in the name of the political party.
“So many people have forgotten to do
that part of the application.”
The board has to contact anyone who
fails to fill out the form completely to let
them know what is missing.
Anyone who voted by mail or in person
before March 17 does not need to
vote again. All ballots already submitted
will count, as long as they are otherwise
valid. Tabulation of votes will
begin after 7:30 p.m. April 28. All ballots
postmarked by April 27 and received
by May 8 will be counted. Official
results will be available by May 19.
Move over Prince Charming
By Theresa Hennis
Staff Writer
In uncertain times, we look for something
or someone to believe in. London author
Pamela Causey Stanforth’s new book,
“The Princess of Waterfall Castle,” shines
the spotlight on a heroine whose belief in
God gives her the strength to stand up for
herself, her family, and her kingdom as she
battles adversity in many forms.
Stanforth’s book was written before the
coronavirus (COVID-19) became a threat.
“The book’s release is timely for today because
we face the unknowns of a deadly
virus, just as my characters face a pandemic
of their own, with people dying from a
strange fever,” Stanforth said. “It shows
that there's hope in spite of the fearful
things we face. We, like the main character,
Angeletta, have to keep our hearts focused
and find joy in the little things.”
Stanforth’s desire to write stories for her
granddaughters inspired the book. Their
love for everything princess gave Stanforth
the idea to write about a young princess who
depends on God, unlike princess stories that
depend on fairy godmothers or charming
princes to save the day. Stanforth wanted to
create a strong female role model, and her
heroine saves the prince, instead of the
other way around.
A keynote inspirational and motivational
speaker, fine artist, feature writer and storyteller,
Stanforth is originally from Natchitoches,
La. She comes from a line of strong
women, so writing about strong women
came naturally to her.
“I can move better and sleep better. I am in
a much better mood. I can do more with my
family and I’m actually looking forward to
the summer so I can work in my yard. I’m
looking forward to retirement now!” R.H.
New author Pamela Causey Stanforth of London poses with her
newly released book, “The Princess of Waterfall Castle.” The book
was inspired by her granddaughters’ love of all things princess.
The story showcases strong female characters who rise above
adversity to ultimately save the day without the help of a prince.
“The women in my family live up to the name ‘steel magnolias’,”
Stanforth said. “Four strong female characters in my book face adversity,
and they still rise above it. The heroine’s mother in the
book, Yalissa, resembles my grandmother, a medicine woman for
our community who worked in cotton fields, cut cross ties for the
railroad, picked pecans, and worked her own land while raising
nine children after losing her husband.”
After hearing and writing the stories of many strong women in
Ohio for a local publication, Stanforth, a “steel magnolia” in her
own right, coined the name “graphene carnations” to describe the
women she met. Graphene is made up of carbon atoms arranged in
a honeycomb lattice pattern and is 200 times stronger than steel.
“The Ohio state flower is the red carnation, and when I say an
Ohio woman is a graphene carnation, I’m saying she is 200 times
stronger than steel,” Stanforth said.
The message in “The Princess of Waterfall Castle” centers on humankind’s
ability to rise above seemingly hopeless circumstances.
‘Self Made’ is well-acted but kind of a mess
With theaters closed for the time being,
a handful of distribution studios have decided
to release their upcoming attractions
on Video on Demand, which in the past has
been the place where movies go to escape
widespread public shame.
Pricing has been debated, with some studios
allowing 48-hour rentals for $6.99
while others are dropping theirs for $20.
While families may have paid the latter
amount for tickets and food before, it’s a little
much to ask an individual to fork over
that kind of dough, especially in this economy.
And, if I’m being really honest, most
movies are not worth the $5 admission to
the matinee, but I digress.
While I will continue to peruse those offerings,
I will largely be searching other
streaming platforms for potentially entertaining
movies, limited television series and
television shows.
The show that seems to have everyone
abuzz is Netflix’s “Tiger King,” which I had
planned to review. Upon watching the first
episode of the seven-part docuseries, however,
I realized my tolerance for stupidity is
immensely low right now, so I passed on it.
As I was browsing the other new releases,
I saw Octavia Spencer’s face pop up
on the screen for “Self Made: Inspired by the
Life of Madam C.J. Walker” and decided to
check it out. With the exception of “Ma,” it
is always a delight to watch her performances,
so I thought this might follow suit.
For the most part, this four-episode series
does that just, allowing Spencer to
the reel deal
showcase her intensive
range of emotion
as she brings a
pioneer of the black
beauty industry to
life on screen. The
overall series, however,
is a bit of a
mess with the use of a modern soundtrack
and filming tricks set against its depiction
of early 1900s life. While I understand the
viewpoint of the writers and directors, it
made for an occasionally jarring viewing experience.
It begins in 1908 St. Louis where a beleaguered
Sarah Breedlove is working as a
laundress to the affluent. With her husband
deceased and her daughter Lelia (Tiffany
Haddish) in school, she has no time for the
finer things in life, especially concern for her
appearance.
After a particularly hard day, she meets
Addie Munroe (Carmen Ejogo), a businesswoman
in the beauty industry who wants to
employ Sarah’s services. Addie takes the
downtrodden Sarah under her wing and
tries to get her to rediscover a zest for life.
Through work and companionship, the
two bond over life’s ills and celebrate as
Sarah finds comfort in her appearance
through hair growth attributed to Addie’s
products. Inspired by her friend, Sarah
pitches the idea of becoming a spokeswoman
Message of hope
We are going through some hard times
right now. We will get out of this. Through
our country’s history, we have had tough
times, but we find a way to get going and
winning. Just keep listening to our leaders,
and we will get a win over this virus. God is
David Timmons
Mount Sterling
to the masses but is quickly rebuffed.
Believing that Addie does not want her
to become a business partner due to her
physical looks, the two bitterly part ways.
Afterward, Sarah becomes determined to
make a better hair product for all black
women and market it to all women, not just
those deemed physically acceptable by society’s
ridiculous standards.
The subsequent episodes follow Sarah
(who takes on the name Madam C.J.
Walker) as she gains a cult following for her
hair products, marries advertising rep
Charles James Walker (Blair Underwood),
moves to Indiana and opens a factory and
works to become the next Rockefeller. Her
dreams come to fruition to an extent but at
great personal cost.
The writers and directors were wise to
use the wording “inspired by the life of,”’ as
the series seems to take several liberties
with Walker’s story. The most outlandish
comes at the expense of Annie Turnbo Malone,
the real-life woman on which Addie
Munroe in based. In the series, the running
conflict between the two self-made millionaires
has more to do with appearance while
most historians believe it had more to do
with claims of formula theft. That in of itself
could propel a series as it is ripe with
drama, but instead this adaptation turns
Addie into a one-note villain hell-bent on
the destruction of Walker’s burgeoning
manufacturing company.
While the theatrics and ensuing conflict
between the two women were mildly amusing
to watch, it ultimately proved to be a
distraction into what was otherwise a decent
general public introduction of an inspiring
woman who used her fortune to
uplift the arts community, historical black
colleges and other civil rights causes and organizations.
So if you’re looking to know more about
this great trailblazer, maybe stick to the
written word, such as “On Her Own
Ground,” a biography written by her greatgreat-granddaughter,
A’Lelia Bundles. But
if you’re looking for a well-acted but odd
mixture of flash and embellished strife, it’s
a good way to pass the time.
Former school building to become Art Center
Guild excited about
larger gallery and
more classroom space
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
More space to make and display more
art. That’s the idea behind the London Visual
Arts Guild’s (LVAG) forthcoming move
to a new location.
Since its start in 2008, the non-profit has
been hosting exhibits, holding classes, and
offering workspace to artists of all ages at
Gallery on High, 5 E. High St., and Studio
7, 7 E. High St., in London. The guild’s lease
at these locations expires at the end of
April, after which the group will move to
121 E. First St.
The new location, to be named the London
Art Center, is a one-story brick building
on the former London City Schools campus,
now owned by the city of London. The building
once was home to the school district’s
vocational, agriculture, and art classes. It
Tony Reeder and Josie Harris work on a
remodeling project at the London Visual
Arts Guild’s new space.
Drawing by Judy Dillon-Smith
The London Visual Arts Guild is renovating a former school building at 121 E. First St.
to serve as its new London Art Center.
has sat empty since the school district vacated
the downtown campus.
“It’s at least three times the size of the
space we have now,” said Sandy Fox, LVAG
vice president, also noting that the new location
comes with plenty of parking.
The space is divided into three large
rooms and several smaller spaces. The large
rooms will house the guild’s gallery, gift
shop and classroom for adults, and children’s
classroom and display area. The
smaller spaces will be used for artist workspace,
one-on-one instruction, small group
classroom space, and storage. The building
also includes a small kitchen.
The guild is leasing the space from the
city.
“I think they will be great tenants. They
do so much for the city. They are one of the
hidden gems of London,” said London
Mayor Pat Closser. “Giving them more
space will let them expand and get more exposure
and increase the arts for the community
even more than they already have.”
Originally, the group was to take occupancy
in October of last year, but the building
has no heat. The city is working on
getting a gas line installed so that furnaces
can go in.
In the meantime, guild volunteers are
remodeling what they can. The have removed
old fixtures and unneeded items,
done some painting, started drywall installation,
and modified the side entrance to the
gallery for easier access.
Grant funding is helping to cover costs.
The Ohio Arts Council awarded the guild
$2,750 in matching funds for lighting and
the construction of display units for sculpture
and other three-dimensional art
pieces.
“We’ve never had room for sculptures
and 3-D art before,” Fox said.
Stanley Electric in London awarded the
guild $5,000 for costs associated with transition
to the new space. Several other donations,
large and small, plus proceeds from a
fall fundraiser are making the remodeling
project possible.
Fox said she does not know when the
new art center will open. Timing will depend
on completion of the furnace project
and the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For now, guild members are looking forward
to hosting a combined show in August.
They plan to merge their 6th Annual
Community Show, originally scheduled for
May 14-June 14, with their annual Member
Show, scheduled for Aug. 1-30.
The Community Show welcomes submissions
from the public. New entry deadlines
and drop-off dates will be announced at a
later date.
As for how the community can help with
the new space or operations, Fox said input
is greatly welcomed.
“Let us know what you’d like to see us do
with the space,” she said. “What kind of
classes and events would you like to see?
What would get you interested in the arts
and bring the community together?”
Meals-on-Wheels sees big increase in demand
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
As the chief executive officer of LifeCare Alliance, Charles
Gehring recognizes the vital role of volunteers.
Since taking the reins nearly two decades ago, he said he has
seen a number of similar social service organizations across the
state and country fold due to a lack of volunteers.
“We just cannot survive without them,” he said.
During his tenure, Gehring said he made the recruitment of volunteers
a priority in the five counties the organization serves. He
said to this day he remains grateful for the overwhelming support
they have shown.
“We have thousands of active volunteers participating in our
programs and services,” he said. “I cannot thank them enough for
Phone and Internet Discounts
Available to CenturyLink Customers
The Ohio Public Utilities Commission designated
CenturyLink as an Eligible Telecommunications
Carrier within its service area for universal service
purposes. CenturyLink’s basic local service rates
for residential voice lines are $18.20-$21.40 per
month and business services are $34.45-$43.45
per month. Specific rates will be provided upon
request.
CenturyLink participates in a government benefit
program (Lifeline) to make residential telephone
or qualifying broadband service more affordable
to eligible low-income individuals and families.
Eligible customers are those that meet eligibility
standards as defined by the FCC and state
commissions. Residents who live on federally
recognized Tribal Lands may qualify for additional
Tribal benefits if they participate in certain federal
eligibility programs. The Lifeline discount is
available for only one telephone or qualifying
broadband service per household, and can be on
either wireline or wireless service. Broadband
speeds must be 20 Mbps download and 3 Mbps
upload or faster to qualify.
A household is defined for the purposes of the
Lifeline program as any individual or group of
individuals who live together at the same address
and share income and expenses. Lifeline service is
not transferable, and only eligible consumers may
enroll in the program. Consumers who willfully
make false statements in order to obtain a Lifeline
discount can be punished by fine or imprisonment
and can be barred from the program.
If you live in a CenturyLink service area, please call
with questions or to request an application for the
Lifeline program.
all that they do.”
While the number of volunteers fluctuates
before and after major holidays,
Gehring said they have been fortunate to
have active volunteers ready to provide assistance
as needed. Now, he said, those active
volunteers are needed more than ever,
and the organization is requesting new volunteers
to assemble.
“They are desperately needed to help
provide services in several of our programs,”
Gehring said.
Like most businesses and organizations,
LifeCare Alliance is feeling the impact of
the coronavirus (COVID-19). The organization
has taken steps to weather the outbreak
but changes are necessary.
“We have had to close all 40 of our dining
centers throughout the counties we serve,”
he said, referring to Champaign, Franklin,
Logan, Madison and Marion counties.
The dining centers, he added, are hubs
of activity where patrons, a majority of
whom are older adults or have medical and
physical challenges, congregate to eat, chat
and see friends.
“Due to the closure of our dining centers,”
Gehring said, “more than 700 people
have had to shift from congregate dining to
home deliveries.”
In addition to the hundreds of new
clients requiring home deliveries, the organization
is adding 50 new clients each day.
“We are fortunate to be able to still accept clients,” he said.
To meet the growing demand, Gehring said the organization
needs volunteers for three of its programs: Groceries-on-the-Go
where volunteers pack meals for cancer patients and those living
with AIDS; weekend pet food deliveries to eligible clients; and
Meals-on-Wheels.
According to Gehring, more than 5,000 meals are delivered daily
across the five counties through Meals-on-Wheels.
“It is considered to be one of the largest home meal distribution
programs in the country,” he said.
Due to an increase in community members who want to remain
active or get out of the house during stay-at-home orders, Gehring
said the organization has been holding daily volunteer training sessions
at its central location at 670 Harmon Ave. in Columbus.
“Sometimes, after their training session, they can get right out
and get started on a route,” Gehring said.
Meal distribution sites at located throughout the counties the
organization serves. For instance, if a volunteer lives in Groveport,
they do not have to come to Columbus to collect meals as there is a
central location in the area.
“We do that in all of our areas because it makes the most sense
logistically,” he said. “We have many volunteers who live in Madison
County, and we know not all of them want to, or can, come to
London to pick up meals. So we have locations in Plain City, West
Jefferson, Mount Sterling and South Solon.
“We try to make it as easy and accessible as possible for our volunteers.”
As a precaution, Gehring said temporary changes have been
made on route deliveries to protect clients and volunteers.
“We are no longer requiring the client’s signature when our volunteers
leave their meals by the door,” he said. “We ask that, at
this time, the volunteer step away or go back to their car and wait
for visual confirmation of the meal pickup. Or they could call and
seek verification that way.”
There are some exceptions.
“We do have some clients who cannot come to the door, so the
volunteer will have to go in the house to deliver the meals,” Gehring
said.
Meals-on-Wheels brings smiles to people’s faces. LifeCare Alliance
is in need of more volunteers to continue to make that happen
for clients in its five-county area.
The organization has asked that volunteers
take their temperatures before leaving
for their route and to not deliver meals if
they feel under the weather.
“We want everyone to be safe,” Gehring
said.
The organization has requested that
families delivering meals leave their children
in the cars or keep them away from the
clients’ home.
“There are many families out there who
love to do this as a group,” said Gehring.
“We still encourage that, but we ask that social
distancing be maintained at this time.”
He said that despite the new guidelines,
he knows the community will come out to
support the LifeCare Alliance programs.
One such couple who intends to do just
that is Karen and Phil Rohr. The Grove City
couple has been volunteering with Mealson-Wheels
for approximately 20 years and
said they have no intention to stop.
“We enjoy volunteering for this organization,”
said Karen Rohr. “It gives us so much
pleasure to be of assistance.”
She said they love the interaction they
have with the clients (however brief as they
have hot meals to deliver) and the comfort
they feel knowing they have played a small
part in putting food in the stomachs of those
who need it.
“Some of these wonderful people would
probably never get a meal without this organization,”
she said. “Knowing that we did
something to get them that hot meal makes
us feel like we have done something worthwhile.”
A spiritual fixture on Sundays for nearly 50 years
Pastor’s calling led
him to rehab and
retirement centers
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
For nearly 50 years, Pastor Ervin Baldwin
ministered to the residents of London
Health and Rehabilitation. He retired from
his long-running service last year. To thank
him, the staff and current residents presented
him with a plaque and a celebration
early last month.
Starting humbly with a church bus ministry
in the mid-1970s, Baldwin then expanded
his territory to serve the religious
needs of people at London Health and
Rehab.
“My wife and I started to go to church in
August of 1968,” Baldwin said. “In 1972, our
pastor got me started on our church bus
ministry. I would start out on Sunday, driving
the bus to pick up children for the
church service.
“Then, at 9:30 a.m., I would go to the
nursing home for the Sunday morning service.
I believe God led me to the nursing
home ministry. When I was young, I always
enjoyed talking to the older people.”
MEALS
Continued from page 8
Baldwin ministered at Madison House
for approximately 10 years, at the Madison
County jail for about 20 years and at Bluebird
Retirement Community for five years,
but his longest tenure by far was at London
Health and Rehab.
“The ministry at the center has meant a
lot to me through the years,” he said. “God
was there every Sunday.”
One of the challenges Baldwin faced in
conducting services outside the confines of
a traditional brick-and-mortar church was
securing the assistance of volunteers, but
helpers like Jim Miller and Gary Groves answered
that prayer.
Ashley Waddle, admissions and marketing
director at London Health and Rehab,
said the center opened in 1972. Shortly
thereafter, Baldwin joined the team as a
volunteer.
“He was dedicated to providing a way for
all the residents to worship and have faith
in God during a time when they were in
need of some hope and friendship,” Waddle
said. “He had many special relationships
with residents and staff over the years.
“London Health and Rehab is appreciative
of his service and dedication to our residents.”
Pastor Ervin Baldwin chats with residents
at London Health and Rehabilitation where
he ministered on Sundays for nearly 50
years.
Rohr said she knows it is recommended
that older adults limit contact with others,
but said that she and her husband have no
plans to step away from delivering meals.
“We really didn’t have too much of a discussion
about it,” she said. “We felt that if we
followed the organization’s new guidelines, it
would be fine to continue to deliver meals.”
She said she would recommend becoming
a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer to anyone able
to, global pandemic or not.
“It is just a great way to give back to your
community,” she said.
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Two recent donations to the South Charleston Heritage
Commission have set local history buffs to
buzzing. One has them smiling in wonder, and the
other one has them scratching their heads.
The first is a colorful patchwork quilt that includes
a piece of cloth on which the following words are
printed: “Sixteenth Annual Reunion of the 110th Reg’t
O.V.I., South Charleston, Ohio, August 6th, 1885.” The
110th was the Civil War regiment in which South
Charleston area men served. The Civil War ended in
1865.
“It’s amazing that the Civil War veterans were meeting
like that,” said Sue Mattinson, Heritage Commission
president. “It’s just a phenomenal find.”
Credit for the find and donation goes to Josh Murray,
who purchased the quilt from an antiques dealer.
A Springfield resident, Murray grew up in South
Charleston and teaches at Miami View Elementary.
Civil War veterans from South Charleston included:
Joseph F. Bennett, William Cheney, Wilson M.D. Clemans,
James W. Griffith, John T. Griffith, Freeman
Marshall, Russell McCollum, George McMillen, Charles
Paullin, Darwin Peirce, John T. Pierce, Lewis J. Reeder,
Joseph Schickedantz, Bynner B. Sweet, George P. Truitt,
John W. Warrington and Thomas C. Wilhide.
As for the other fun artifact, Lynn Dickerson, a
South Charleston farmer, donated a photo of a man
decked out in a sharp suit, coat and hat. The man is
holding a cigar and standing outside a car. Heritage
Commission members estimate the photo was taken in
The South Charleston Heritage Commission is asking
for help from the public in identifying the man in this
photo. It is estimated the photo was taken in the mid-
1930s in South Charleston.
The South Charleston Heritage Commission recently
received a patchwork quilt that dates back to 1885. Information
about a Civil War veterans reunion in South
Charleston is printed on one of the patches.
the mid-1930s.
“But we don’t know who the man is,” Mattinson said.
“He might be a banker or some other professional.”
The Heritage Commission is hoping someone in the
community can identify the man. Ideas can be emailed
to hccofscoh@gmail.com.
Women of South Charleston
Mattinson has gained a following for her well researched
talks about local history. She was set to
reprise her presentation on prolific South Charleston
architect Edward Edwards last month before coronavirus
(COVID-19) concerns postponed the event.
Now, she is hard at work on another talk topic:
Women of South Charleston. This year marks the
100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment,
guaranteeing women’s constitutional right to
vote. Using the milestone as inspiration, Mattinson is
focusing on what local women were doing before they
had the right to vote.
Mattinson doesn’t want to give away too much about
the stories she’s unearthed so far, as she is still doing
research and formulating her talk. But she did offer up
some teasers. Her presentation will explain why Han-
South Charleston
Finding new and remote ways to teach and learn
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
With schools closed since mid-March and
Gov. Mike DeWine’s recent announcement
that they will remain closed through May 1,
teachers are working to find more and more
ways to educate and engage their students
from afar.
For many, like A.J. Woods, fifth-grade
math teacher and high school head football
coach at Southeastern Local Schools, that
means delving into new territory.
“I’m not technically savvy. I’m learning
everything on the fly,” Woods said from his
home, where he has been keeping in touch
with students primarily through Google
Classroom.
The free web service allows teachers to
create, distribute and grade assignments
digitally. Students log in using their school
email addresses. For the first 10 school closure
days, Woods used Google Classroom in
conjunction with paper copies of lessons he
sent home with his students prior to the closure.
“Every day, I post notes and examples for
the students that relate to their hard
copies,” Woods said.
Starting April 6, he’s going all digital.
“I will post videos of myself and also post
links I find online that relate to what the
kiddos will be working on,” he said, adding
that he will be broadcasting from his
garage.
Another resource Woods has found to be
helpful is an online curriculum called IXL.
Students log in, he refers them to a specific
course, and then he watches how well they
do. They earn or lose “smart points” based
on how well they answer questions and
solve problems. The program shows students
how to correct their mistakes, and
Woods chimes in, too.
“If a kid is struggling or the whole class
is struggling with something, I can see it on
my end, and I can send a video or email out
to help them,” Woods said.
To preserve a sense of routine and give
students a chance to let loose a little, Woods
HISTORY
Continued from page 12
nah Peirce was the most widely known
woman in South Charleston at the time of
her death in 1918 and why Abigail Paist,
wife of Charles Paist for whom South
Charleston is named, made the history
books in her own right.
Mattinson said the research for this talk
has been both fascinating and challenging.
Resource books from 100 years ago generally
don’t offer much detail about women’s
lives beyond their relationships to other people
as daughters, wives and mothers.
hopes to continue to set aside time each Friday
for fun. “Prodigy,” a game in which students
travel through a virtual world,
earning points and rewards for solving
math problems, tops the fun list.
“Kids really like it. If they had a choice,
that’s the one they would do every day,”
Woods said.
As for the coaching side of his job, Woods
is embracing technology there, too. This is
his first year as head football coach. Using
Google Classroom, he sent his players a
video in which his fellow coaches introduce
themselves. He also uses the service to post
suggestions for players’ daily schedule, covering
everything from workouts and nutrition
to school work and helping around the
house.
When DeWine announced the extension
of school closures to May 1, Woods split his
team into seven groups of five, with a senior
in charge of each group. It’s up to the seniors
to text or email their classmates to see
how they are doing and make sure they are
keeping up with their routines.
And of course, there are good old fashioned
phone calls.
“I’m calling kids daily, on the school side
and on the football side. Seems like I’m on
the phone all the time, but these are different
times,” Woods said.
Like his fellow teachers and coaches,
Woods is on the lookout for other inside- and
outside-the-box solutions to keeping students
and athletes engaged and in touch
with each other.
“I’m open to ideas,” he said.
David Shea, Southeastern Schools superintendent,
said staff members are utilizing
a wide variety of resources to do their jobs.
ClassTag, a free online tool for parentteacher
communication, is getting a lot of
use. Many staffers are using Zoom, a popular
video conferencing service, as well.
“We just have to keep learning about
new distance learning opportunities,” Shea
said.
All of the district’s high school students
have school-issued computer. Several students
in grades K-8 signed out Chrome-
“I want to know what they were doing.
Yes, they were having babies and keeping
house, but some of them were doing more,”
she said.
Mattinson welcomes input from others
who have stories, letters, family histories or
other documentation about interesting
women living in South Charleston in the
years leading up to the 19th Amendment
passage in 1920. She hopes to give her talk
sometime this fall.
Siblings Morgen Watson (fifth grade), Maddison Watson (seventh grade), and Lyvi Bonifay
(fifth grade) are in full-on distance learning mode, connecting with their teachers
and lessons online through laptops at home.
books to use at home while the schools are
closed. The majority of the district’s students
have Internet service at home. Shea
noted that Wi-Fi is available in the high
school’s main parking lot; no password is
needed.

Traffic advisories for I-70 and 323
I-70 traffic pattern changes
A new traffic pattern on I-70, between U.S. Route 42
and the Franklin County line, went into effect on March
30 and will remain in place until September.
I-70 has been reduced to two lanes in each direction.
Both directions of traffic are on the eastbound side so
the contractor can rebuild the westbound pavement. All
entrance and exit ramps are being maintained via median
crossovers.
Both directions of traffic are separated by a barrier
wall, but lanes are narrower and the speed limit has
been reduced. The speed limit on I-70 east is 65 mph,
and I-70 west varies from 55 mph to 65 mph, depending
on the presence of workers and location of work.
This traffic pattern will be in effect until September
when I-70 west will return to the westbound lanes.
Then, crews will pave the final layer of asphalt in both
The Ohio Development Services Agency
and Bridges CAP are working to help keep
Ohioans safe during this time of emergency.
Recently, Gov. Mike DeWine declared a
state of emergency regarding COVID-19,
and Ohio Department of Health Director
Amy Acton, M.D., MPH, has issued orders
to limit social interactions to prevent the
spread of COVID-19.
Effective immediately, Ohioans who are
enrolling in the Percentage of Income Payment
Plan Plus (PIPP) for the first time, applying
for Home Energy Assistance Winter
Crisis Program, or have limited income are
no longer required to visit a local energy assistance
provider to complete an application.
Now, enrollees can pick up an
application packet at the front door and return
it with their documents to be completed.
Appointments may be completed
over the phone during the scheduled appointment
time rather than face-to-face.
Ohioans can visit energyhelp.ohio.gov to
start their application and upload the required
documents prior to their appointment.
For those who do not have access to
the Internet and/or cannot upload their documentation,
the local energy assistance
provider can complete those application
over the phone. For a list of required documentation
or to schedule an appointment
call, (740) 852-3511.
“Working with our local providers, we
have been providing Ohio families with the
support they need to manage their energy
bills, and now this support is even more important,”
said Lydia Mihalik, director of the
Ohio Development Services Agency. “The
obituaries
nephews. She was preceded in death
by: her parents; brother, Jack; two infant
brothers, Marlin Everett and Albert Snowden;
and sister-in-law, Patsy Bradley. Due
to COVID-19 concerns, there was no visitation.
A graveside service was held March 27
in Somerford Township Cemetery with Pastor
Dwaine A. Hill officiating. Memorial contributions
may be made to: Grace Baptist
Church Missionary Fund, 121 N. Madison
served by Rader-Lynch & Dodds Funeral
Home & Cremation Service, London.
online application, in a normal scenario,
makes it easier to apply and reduces the
length of an in-person appointment, but
now it is providing a bridge to assistance
during an incredibly difficult time.”
The Development Services Agency also
will extend the Winter Crisis Program
(WCP) until May 1 to align with the Public
Utilities Commission of Ohio’s extended
Winter Reconnect Order. The regular Home
Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will be
extended until June 1.
The Development Services Agency’s interactive
voice response phone lines will not
be available, however Ohioans may continue
to call (800) 282-0880 and select option
