Welcome to our Spring Newsletter!
Spring is a fresh season of newness. We come out

winter months produce within us and our lives.
It’s now time to wake up, stretch and move
forward so that you can bloom and grow!
For this issue of the TNT, we are seizing the
season to go above and beyond! At our annual

introduced the Yellow Standard. What does going

deinition and in this issue, you will ind several
stories of what the Yellow Standard means to our
Truly Nolen family.
Inside, you will also ind beautiful scenic photos
taken by your colleagues. Truly Nolen is all over
the country and in many places, the season
brings mild temperatures in the 60s and 70s.
Check out page 8 to see what spring looks like in
other cities!
We are excited to share the irst issue of 2020 and
we hope you enjoy the outdoors this spring

From the Nolen Family
Truly Nolen of America, Inc. has a long history of going the extra mile for our
customers —particularly during times of great need. In the early days, as the world
was coming out of the Great Depression, Truly W. Nolen was not only taking care of the
rats, but he was treating each customer like family. He would do anything — visit them
in the hospital, ix plumbing late on a Sunday, buy groceries — any opportunity to help
a customer well beyond killing bugs.
Truly David Nolen continued that tradition in good times and in bad. For example,
during Hurricane Andrew when other companies were shutting down, Truly gave the
marching orders to give our fume tarps out to whomever needed a tarp for a
temporary roof. This outside-the-box thinking, afforded us long, meaningful
relationships. Ultimately, we came out of the ‘storm’ stronger than ever. We take care of
our customers, not just their bugs.
During these uncertain times, there is one thing that is certain — following the Golden
Rule. We have an opportunity not only as a company, but also as an industry. Consider
this: we are accustomed to wearing gloves and masks. We routinely educate people on
sanitation and often help in that process. We talk to people during stressful situations
often about pests that they frequently cannot see. Although there is nothing that can
quite prepare for the impact of this pandemic, Truly Nolen has a unique opportunity to
truly serve our community.
We have an opportunity to go beyond killing bugs. We have an opportunity to give to
and serve our communities at the highest level ensuring that the experience is
exceptional, even during uncertain times. This is what the Yellow Standard is all about.
A special thank you to all of our partners who are in the ield and out servicing
the community!
Stay Strong! Follow the Golden Rule.

Jenny Ensign Branch 072
I think Erin Petersen’s story about getting his own
businesses card from a competitor would make a good
addition to the magazine! Check out his post on Yammer!
- Chris Cline | Manager Branch 048
From Erin’s Yammer post:
“I meant to post this yesterday. This was to funny not to
share. Now I have given many, many business cards out. I
have also received many. This one however will now always
be special to me. While enjoying some time off yesterday
with my wife and grandson we stopped for gas. I could not
help but notice the Baron’s Pest Control truck parked at the
pump right by me. So when the technician came out I just had
to stop him. I asked him what they do for bedbugs. His
response was “well between you and me. If you want it done
right....” he then got into his truck and handed me this card.
“Call this number. I have been told that she knows what she is
talking about.” I just stared at him. Thanked him and walked
away. I did not have the heart to tell him that I was the same
person that he just handed the business card for. Talk about
yellow standards. Well, you don’t get more yellow than your
competition handing out your card.”
This is Jenny Ensign. In the midst of a lot of worry and
negativity, Jenny always wears a smile and has an awesome
attitude.

We noticed a few degraded boards under our roof lashing
that needed to be replaced before adding gutters. It didn't
appear to be from termites but we weren't sure. Just to be
safe we called Truly Nolen. Chuck arrived within an hour,
assessed the boards and let us know it was not from
termites. He explained their available services without a
hard sell, gave me his card, and he was off to his next job. I
appreciate honest companies and people like Truly Nolen

future pest control needs we have. Thanks Chuck!

Annual Manager Meeting Featured the
Yellow Standard, Color War in Orlando
Truly Nolen of America held a successful 2020 Manager Meeting January
7-9. The meeting was held in Orlando at the Rosen Plaza and featured a
paperless, digital set-up all three days. The meeting included Scarlett
Nolen, Justin Bellet, and Matt Wild's unveiling of the Yellow Standard
along with a Team Yellow versus Team Black Color War that built
camaraderie all week long. Some of the other highlights included an
amazing Hot Sauce challenge between Justin and Matt, the unveiling of
the marketing team's new commercial with the iconic Mouse Car as the
centerpiece, and some terriic breakout sessions with the District
Managers leading the way. The crowd also gave Bob Hartley a standing
ovation honoring his 50 years with the company, which was highlighted
with a video Grant Hunker put together for the occasion and a wonderful
introduction by Vickie Nolen. In addition, the week included a trip to Howl
at the Moon, where Toby Srebnik's high school classmate Ken Gustafson
kept everyone entertained with some great dueling piano tunes
(including one about the company!) and an awards ceremony where
managers were recognized for their awesome achievements in 2019. We
look forward to everyone living the Yellow Standard in 2020!
Above & Beyond for Fox 35 Orlando
While learning about the Yellow Standard, several team members showed what it was like
to work together as a team during the Manager Meeting. Fox 35 Orlando called Toby at
10:45a Wednesday January 8 on deadline wanting to do a story between 1p-2p in Orlando
on ire ants. Normally, this would be plenty of time to arrange something; however, with at
least three of the people I would normally use for a segment being in attendance at the
meeting with me, Toby was not sure if he could deliver what the station wanted.
Fortunately, through a quick series of on-site conversations with Josh Bewley, Don Kitchens
and Mike Duncan and a phone call with David Apgar, all four pushed Toby in the right
direction to Isaac Brown, who was available during the window and located a ire ant
mound in Hunter’s Creek to stage a shot. We thank Isaac for knocking this opportunity out
of the park and to everyone else who helped meet the deadline on short notice. The story
aired on that evening's 10p news as well as multiple times the next morning.

The Happy Exterminator!
Bill Reinwald | Franchise 501
With Domestic Franchising holding their annual meeting in Orlando at Walt Disney World's
Boardwalk Resort February 18-20, there was plenty of time to smile while learning about The
Yellow Standard. In this case, we thank Joanne Reinwald of our Southampton, Ontario
franchise for sharing this photo of her son Bill which she has affectionally dubbed "The Happy
Exterminator." While we don't necessarily know where in the Magic Kingdom this was taken,
Joanne was quick to point out the rarity of such a picture of Bill like this! Keep on smiling, Bill,
and thank you, Joanne, for always demonstrating the Yellow Standard north of the border.

Springtime Pests, Truly Nolen
& The Yellow Standard
As our customers are swinging their doors and windows wide open to welcome the fresh spring air, they’re also rolling out
the red carpet for commonly known pests such as cockroaches, rodents, and house lies – to name a few. Not only are these
pests a nuisance, but do your customers know they pose a threat to their health? In addition to possibly biting and stinging,
these common pests also spread irritating allergies, bacteria, and disease. Education plays a big part of Truly Nolen’s ‘Yellow
Standard,’ allowing us to provide the best in pest control service for our customers. Identifying and controlling pests,
educating ourselves and our customers on the various health and safety concerns associated with these pests will help
improve everyone’s health and wellbeing.
Cockroaches
In recent years, several studies have surfaced, pointing out the distinct
connection between cockroaches and asthma. The National Institute of
Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) reported that 1-in-5 children in
the United States have severe sensitivities to cockroach allergens, which
can cause or increase the severity of asthma symptoms. These allergens
are commonly exposed in homes through fecal droppings, saliva, shed
skins, and decomposing bodies of cockroaches. This has a direct negative
impact on our customer’s home interior air quality.
Commonly found in the kitchen or bathroom areas, cockroaches naturally
carry up to 33 various kinds of bacteria on the spines of their legs and
body, which can contaminate food, cooking equipment, and food surfaces.
Educate your customers on the importance of keeping foods
properly sealed and stored, cleaning their kitchens daily,
maintaining dry and well-ventilated basements and crawlspaces, if
the home has them, and disposing of garbage regularly, helping
prevent or control an infestation of these germ spreading pests.
Ask the Expert
Rodents
Regular inspections and monitoring for signs of rodent activity are
paramount to effective rodent control. Part of that inspection is always
being on the lookout for rodent droppings, urine stains, and gnaw marks.
Mice and rats pose a signiicant threat, given their capacity to produce more
than 25,000 fecal pellets annually in addition to irritating allergies. They
are known to spread many diseases, including Hantavirus, Pulmonary
Syndrome, which is a respiratory illness with lu-like symptoms.
10
Ask The Expert
This disease can cause headaches, fever, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal
pain. Rodents can also expose our customers to the rodents hitchhiking
buddies, leas, mites, ticks, and lice.
Educate your customers to stay consistent with cleaning to ensure
there are no food crumbs or spills left behind, keep their garbage
and storage spaces free of clutter to deter rodents that are on the
hunt for nesting spots. Prune overhanging tree branches away from
the home’s rooline. Keep vines, bushes and ground covers neatly
trimmed and away from the house if possible, to remove hiding areas
around the exterior. Regularly checking windows, screens, door
seals, plumbing, and pipe entries for potential entryways that could
be sealed or excluded.
House Flies
We are all too familiar with this common pest. These household
disturbances are widespread because of their remarkable ability to
reproduce quickly and in large quantities.
House lies are premier carriers of infectious diseases, given their
capability to transfer more than 100 pathogens, including malaria,
salmonella, and tuberculosis. Not to mention they defecate regularly and
instantly contaminate food and surfaces by spreading disease-ridden
organisms that are picked up on their bodies and through their saliva.
Educate your customers on how to prevent these tiny pests from
becoming health burdens. Ensuring doors, windows, and vents are
kept closed as much as possible. Looking for properly itted screens
and repairing any rips or tears in those screens that are found. An
essential part of ly management is also keeping pet droppings
picked up and disposed of regularly and keeping trash picked up and
in closed receptacles, away from the house, if possible.
For our health’s sake, and that of our customers and their families, we owe it
to everyone to take all the necessary steps to identify the pests accurately, keep
ourselves and our customers educated, providing unsurpassed quality service
and “TRULY Living the Yellow Standard.”
