nightlife. Said before he’s not stupid. He shimmies up the<br />

wrought iron gates and I’m surprised to see such grace in<br />

a teenage body. Wonder what else he’s hiding from his<br />

friends? I could climb the gates after him or even pick the<br />

lock, but a little twist of metal is so much more satisfying.<br />

He’s sitting back on the postcard bench. Funny how it’s<br />

got a name now - in my head anyway. Obviously a<br />

favourite thinking spot. Not sure if I like the idea of him<br />

coming here on his own. White hats are supposed to<br />

stick together, sing school songs and the like. He<br />

shouldn’t be here, sitting on his tod. Right little nobby<br />

no-mates. And the worst thing is, they drove him here.<br />

I saunter over to him and stand, lighting up and taking<br />

the air. He’s got his back to me, sitting sideways on the<br />

bench, legs up, hugging his knees like they’re the only<br />

thing keeping him grounded. He stiffens slightly as I<br />

approach and then settles again. I guess he knew it was<br />

me or else he’s got a serious death wish. I’m so close I<br />

could touch his shoulder, run my fingers through his hair,<br />

break his neck. But he doesn’t even budge. Balls of steel,<br />

this one. I shift round in front of him, holding his gaze for<br />

a moment, ‘til he drops his eyes back towards his knees.<br />

Right, now we’ve re-established the order of things I can<br />

take my time, maybe push things along a bit. I fish
