the top of the statue as he leans forward.<br />

“Janus, nos queso vos.”<br />

Spike clutches at his head as the candles flicker and flare<br />

and then he lets out an almighty scream and slumps to<br />

his knees in the centre of the circle. I start to move<br />

towards him, when there’s a crash behind me as the<br />

door smashes against the wall and swings back, hanging<br />

precariously from one hinge. Buffy and Willow barrel into<br />

the room breathing hard, with Riley at their heels, and I<br />

feel like I’m outside my body, looking down on the scene,<br />

like I’m watching some surreal mime or puppet theatre.<br />

Spike on his knees, rocking back and forth with his hands<br />

on his head. Ethan facing him, his hands clutched, vicelike,<br />

to the statue of his god. Giles, glasses in hand, his<br />

expression half way between guilty and defiant. Buffy<br />

has her hands clenched like she’s ready for battle and<br />

Willow is at her back, her eyes narrowed and her mouth<br />

set as she takes in the scene. Riley is there, as always, in<br />

the background, ramrod straight, his hand reaching for a<br />

weapon that isn’t there. I can’t see myself, but I don’t
