Prairie Township
plans its annual
Farmer’s Market
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
The Prairie Township Farmer’s
Market will open later in 2020.
Normally, the farmer’s market runs
from 4 to 7 p.m. every Monday starting
in early to mid-June. This year, event
organizers are planning to open the market
at the end of June.
“Usually we open earlier, but we had
already decided, based on feedback from
our vendors, that we were going to open
later and that was before COVID-19
happened,” said Michael Pollack, director
of the Prairie Township Community
Center. “This year, we are opening June
29 and staying open until Sept. 28,
which is longer than we are usually
open.”
Pollack said the reason for this
change is because vendors said they will
have more produce to sell if they wait
until later in the season and extend the
market until later in the fall.
“Due to weather, their growing season
has changed, and this adjusted time
frame works with that season,” Pollack
said. “Produce is ready later in the season
and lasts longer than previous seasons,
so adjusting this time will ensure
we will have plenty of product for people
to purchase.”
The market expects to have 12 to 15
vendors by the time it opens. Currently,
10 vendors are signed up, but Pollack
said he anticipates more will sign up as
time progresses. However, he said some
vendors may not return due to the coronavirus
pandemic.
“The market may be a little different
this year. We may have hand sanitizing
stations, people may have to wear personal
protective equipment like masks
and gloves and may have to practice
social distancing,” Pollack said.
Safety first for
Columbus fire
By Josephine Birdsell
Staff Writer
The Columbus Division of Fire altered
its addiction response methods to limit the
potential spread of COVID-19.
The daily overdose average in
Columbus is 8.14 overdoses per day. There
was an uptick in overdoses earlier this
month, reaching 13 overdoses per day on
April 4, said Steve Martin, public information
officer for the division of fire.
This issue was discussed on April 15 as
the city of Columbus Department of
Neighborhoods gave a virtual neighborhood
update on the westside area.
The increase in daily overdoses is “twofold,”
resulting from upticks in both psychological
emergencies and illicit drugs,
said Lieutenant George Wallace.
However, the division of fire is respond-
“However, right now we plan on the market still going
on. We will make whatever changes we need to protect
market shoppers.”
The start date of the farmer’s market is subject to
change due to coronavirus prevention measures.
In other community center news, the center will
remain closed as long as the stay at home order in Ohio
is in place. The community center also had to cancel
several programs they hoped to reschedule this spring.
“Since Governor (Mike) DeWine extended the stay
at home order, we had to cancel our spring session of
swim lessons,” said Pollack. “We had hoped to salvage
the spring session, but there was no way.”
The center is offering refunds or credits for those
registered for the swim lesson sessions, which had just
begun when the original Ohio stay at home order was
put into place. Pollack said offering families refunds or
credit also gives them peace of mind that they will get
the money back they already invested in the lessons.
The center was able to reschedule several events
that were supposed to take place during the pandemic,
including a karate class and mother/son date night.
City supports Children’s Hunger Alliance
On April 20, Columbus City Council passed an ordinance
to enter into a $100,000 grant agreement with
Children’s Hunger Alliance (CHA) in support of open
summer meal sites for Columbus children.
These sites are places where any child can receive a
nutritious meal over the summer without enrollment
requirements. Proper nutrition is essential for children
to continue their growth and development during the
school year and over the summer. During the COVID-
19 health crisis, it is especially important to provide
options for children and their families to be able to
access healthy meals.
“This pandemic has reinforced the importance of
providing proper nutrition for kids when they aren’t
able to access meals through school,” said President
Pro Tem Elizabeth Brown. “As the schools deal with
the closure of buildings through the rest of the school
year, I am grateful for the partnership of CHA to
ensure children are receiving the meals they need over
the summer.”
The extended partnership with CHA means that
Columbus children can pick up food at various locations
across the city, yet to be finalized. Based on the
current circumstances, site locations are still being
finalized, with a focus by CHA on feeding children in
areas that are not already being served.
ing to emergency calls as usual. The division of fire
also increased the number of firefighters at work in
response to the pandemic, Wallace said.
The division of fire’s Rapid Response Emergency
Addiction Crisis Team, which consists of
firefighters/paramedics, police officers and social workers
who work to connect addicts to rehabilitation facilities,
is still in operation.
However, to limit the potential spread of COVID-19,
the RREACT team is not making visits to addict’s
homes for face-to-face meetings as it usually does.
Instead, members are leaving informational pamphlets
on the door-step and checking-in with addicts by
phone. RREACT is still transporting individuals to
Judy Mobley, president and CEO of CHA, said, “We
appreciate the financial support from the Columbus
City Council for this critical work feeding children.
Under normal circumstances, only 10 percent of children
that qualify for free or reduced-price school meals
have access to a summer meal site. During the COVID-
19 crisis, the need is greater than ever. This summer
meal program will allow us to feed more children especially
focused on those residing in the most impoverished
areas of our city.”
“This pandemic is illustrating the need for all of us
to lift up our family, friends and neighbors, and to reexamine
how we can work more diligently in the future
to make the successes in our community more accessible
for all,” said Brown.
Founded in 1970, Children’s Hunger Alliance is a
statewide non-profit organization dedicated to ending
childhood hunger in Ohio. Through their work,
Children’s Hunger Alliance provides healthy meals
and snacks to food-insecure children, advocates for legislation
to improve the welfare of Ohio’s youngest citizens,
and teaches nutrition and physical education to
those they serve.
Visit childrenshungeralliance.org for additional
information.
The center is planning on moving those events to the
end of August or September.
During the pandemic, the center is trying to offer
community activities.
“Our instructors have been regularly posting fitness
videos on our Facebook page to offer easy to do fitness
activities at home,” Pollack said. “We also are offering
a virtual race where people can participate at any time
without having to gather.”
The fitness videos posted on the Facebook page
range from yoga to ball exercises to Tai Chi. The virtual
race is open to all ages and costs $5 to participate.
“Participants track miles and will receive an award
for their participation,” Pollack said. “They can send
pictures of themselves outside exercising and it promotes
physical activity while safely social distancing.”
Pollack said they have 15 to 20 people signed up
and the community response has been very favorable.
Pollack said some of the events the community center
was planning on hosting this summer are still
scheduled at this time.
rehabilitation facilities when requested.
The division of fire will continue to enter homes on
emergency calls if necessary, but asks that people meet
firefighters and paramedics at their door and wear
face-coverings when possible.
“Obviously we can’t do the six feet safe distancing
when caring for patients, so we’re trying to keep everybody
at the lowest risk we possibly can,” Wallace said.
Firefighters are wearing personal protective equipment
and disinfecting trucks after every emergency
call to reduce the possible spread of COVID-19.
“We’re still responding. We’re still fulfilling our mission
just like we always have. We’re just doing it in a
little different way,” Wallace said.

A message about the Westgate Home and Garden Tour
By Michael Blake
President, Westgate Neighbors Association
On behalf of the entire Westgate Neighbors
Association (WNA) board, thank you for nine years
of support of the Westgate Home and Garden Tour.
Without you, this tour would not be possible, and
your loyal support allows us to continue showcasing
our “Unexpected” neighborhood to all of central
Ohio.
The ongoing COVID-19 health crisis is leaving
many of us with an uncertainty of when we will
once again be back to our normal routines. Due to
current restrictions of group gatherings and social
distancing, the WNA must take responsibility to
keep our homeowners, volunteers and guests
healthy. We have made the difficult decision to cancel
our 10th annual Home and Garden Tour that
was scheduled for June 13, 2020. While this is
painful to announce, I know we made the right decision.
The Westgate Home and Garden Tour is more
than just an event. While we are proud to showcase
the neighborhood, it is also a moment to work
together as neighbors and realize how special our
community is. Community pride is strong in
Westgate so it’s no surprise that on tour day,
Westgate pride is abundant. The tour is responsible
for several new friendships among neighbors and
provides an outlet for many to give back to their
neighborhood. We are so proud and honored to have
such loyal guests, homeowners, volunteers and
overwhelming support from the community. To all
our homeowners, past and future, thank you for
allowing the WNA to share in your achievement as
a homeowner and the American dream.
Since the first Westgate Home and Garden Tour
launched in 2011, we have showcased 83 homes
and/or gardens and welcomed over 3,300 guests to
the neighborhood. While we have never considered
the tour a fundraiser, we have been fortunate to
have had proceeds from past tours fund several different
initiatives in the community. Proceeds have
funded and installed several benches and trash
cans in Westgate Park, and picnic tables at the
West Gate Masonic Lodge for our food truck guests.
Most importantly, as an extension to the WNA’s
mission, we have proudly awarded five scholarships
to local college students to invest in the future.
You can still show your support of the Westgate
Home and Garden Tour by purchasing a virtual
home and garden tour ticket at westgateneighbors.org/donate.
While this ticket does not grant
you access to one of our beautiful homes, your donation
will allow us to continue investing back into
our community.
Mark your calendars, next year’s tour is scheduled
for June 12, 2021! Thank you for your continued
support of the tour and the Westgate Neighbors
Association.
On April 27, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor
Jon Husted, and Dr. Amy Acton, made announcements
regarding Ohio’s plan to responsibly restart Ohio's economy
during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Health care
Beginning May 1, all medically necessary procedures
that do not require an overnight stay in a healthcare facility
or do not require inpatient hospital admission and minimizes
use of personal protective equipment may move forward.
This includes regular doctor visits, well-care checks,
well-baby visits, out-patient surgeries, imaging procedures,
and diagnostic tests. Dental services and veterinary
services may also proceed if a safe environment can be
established.
Healthcare providers and facilities that plan to resume
providing these services must adhere to infection control
practices, have sufficient PPE, and talk with patients
Responsible Restart Ohio
The guiding principles of the Responsible Restart Ohio
plan are protecting the health of employees, customers,
and their families, supporting community efforts to control
the spread of COVID-19, and responsibly getting Ohio
back to work.
“We put this plan together based on all the information
we have about how dangerous COVID-19 still is right now,
balanced with the fact that it's also dangerous to have people
not working,” said DeWine. “COVID-19 is still
out there. It’s still killing people. We’re asking
Ohioans to be reasonable and rational. Please don’t
take huge chances, and please use common sense
when you go out and where you go out.”
Beginning on May 4, manufacturing, distribution,
these businesses can meet mandatory safety
Beginning on May 12, consumer, retail and services,
may reopen if these businesses can meet
mandatory safety requirements for customers and
employees. The full Responsible Restart Ohio plan
for consumer, retail and services can be found at
coronavirus.ohio.gov/ResponsibleRestartOhio.
The general safe business practices that all businesses
must follow as they reopen are:
•Recommending face coverings for all employees,
and recommending them for clients and customers
at all times
•Conducting daily health assessments or selfevaluations
of employees to determine if they
should work
•Maintaining good hygiene at all times such as
hand washing and social distancing
•Cleaning and sanitizing workplaces throughout
the day and at the close of business or between shifts
•Limiting capacity to meet social distancing guidelines
“I have an obligation as the governor of Ohio to get people
back to work and keep them safe. Opening everything
up at once would not be consistent with the obligation to
keep people safe,” said DeWine. “Our Responsible Restart
Ohio plan is the best guarantee that Ohioans will feel safe
going to stores and employees will feel safe going to work.
I’m optimistic about our future, but we can't be reckless.”
Continued closures
The following types of establishments are ordered to
remain closed due to their increased risk of potential
COVID-19 exposure:
•Schools and daycares
•Dine-in restaurants and bars (carry-out is still permitted)
•Personal appearance and beauty businesses
•Older adult daycare services and senior centers
•Adult day support or vocational rehabilitation services
in group settings
•Entertainment, recreation, and gyms
For greater detail on the types of businesses that must
stay closed, visit
coronavirus.ohio.gov/ResponsibleRestartOhio.
Stay at home order / large gatherings
Because the danger of COVID-19 still exists, Ohio’s
Stay at Home order will remain in effect to encourage
Ohioans to continue making reasonable, rational decisions
about leaving home.
Although anyone is susceptible to getting sick with
COVID-19, those who are 65 or older are encouraged to be
especially careful, as are those with high-risk conditions
such as chronic lung disease, moderate to severe asthma,
heart conditions, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or liver
disease, as well as those who are immunocompromised or
obese.
Large gatherings of more than 10 people are still prohibited.
The Franklin Township fire levy has
failed. Officials will now go back to the
drawing board to determine how to proceed.
According to the unofficial results from
the Franklin County Board of Elections,
the Franklin Township Fire Department
levy failed with 491 against and 379 in
favor of the levy. This equals 56 percent
against the levy. The 19.5-mil levy would
have been permanent.
“I think the biggest reason the levy
failed was because a dark-money group ran
a campaign aimed at defeating the levy,”
said Aryeh Alex, township trustee. “The
group sent out mailers, had a website, ran
digital ads and had paid canvassers that
went door-to-door across the township.”
Alex said the other reason he believes
the levy failed was because of the economic
issues the country is facing. Alex said that
when people are unsure how they are going
to pay their bills, it is hard to ask them to
vote in favor of a levy that would increase
expenses.
“When there is economic uncertainty,
like we are all facing right now, it is a lot
tougher to ask people to pay a little more in
property taxes,” Alex said. “When we originally
approved adding this levy to the
March ballot, we had no idea what was in
store. Now everything has changed.”
The levy would have combined all the
township levies into one levy, as well as
replaced the timed levy that will expire in
early 2021. The levy also would have collected
property taxes from the entire township,
including properties that were
annexed with a type II annexation.
“In 2003, the Ohio legislative government
passed laws to allow townships to
conform our boundaries to include properties
that were annexed with a type II
annexation,” said Franklin Township Fire
Chief James Welch. “What this means for
Franklin Township residents is that this
would have spread out the expense(s) for
fire services to include all properties that
were annexed since 2003.”
Properties like the Hollywood Casino
Columbus that annexed out of the township
would have had to pay their portion
for the levy. As a result, the increase for
township residents would have been minimal,
according to township trustees.
Township leaders wanted the levy to be
permanent so they could avoid constantly
coming back to taxpayers for levy renewals.
Due to the levy failing, the township will
likely come back to taxpayers for a levy
renewal in November. The township has
not determined how much they will ask
voters for in November and if they will
At a recent Franklin Township meeting,
the board discussed things the township is
doing to help those suffering during the
COVID-19 pandemic.
“Among the things we are doing is helping
pass out 20 to 30 sacked lunches on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” said
Mark Potts, administrator for Franklin
Township. “We are working with
The lunches include deli sandwiches,
need it when they come up for a lunch,”
Potts said. “We are getting a lot of homeless
people, as well as others who just need
a lunch during these tough times.”
The township also continues to work
with Central Baptist Church to offer
monthly produce to help those in need. The
food distribution event takes places once a
month on the second Saturday of every
month at the church from 10 a.m. to noon.
Related to the township operations during
COVID-19, Potts said it continues to be
business as usual.
“We are continuing to work on road projects
while practicing social distancing and
the police and fire department continue to
go on runs,” he said. “We do have a new fiscal
officer who started at the beginning of
April and she is busy setting up her new
office. We are trying to limit how much
staff come into the office and if they are
able to work from home, we are encouraging
them to do so.”
The township is having its bi-weekly
board meetings via Zoom conference calls
so the trustees can work from home as
well, Potts added. Potts said this will continue
until the stay at home order has been
lifted and the board can meet regularly
again.
During the last meeting, the board
approved administrative leave for staff
who would be exposed or contract COVID-
19, allowing them to have paid time off
work without having to use their vacation
or sick time.
“Trustee (Ralph) Horn wanted some
regulations around this, so the board
agreed to give employees up to 30 days
administrative leave and an additional 30
days if they would need it,” Potts said.
Potts added that the additional 30 days
would need to be approved by the board
first before the employees could take it. He
said it is up to each jurisdiction in Ohio on
if they want employees to use vacation or
sick time.
In Entertainment
“Extraction” heavy on grunts and gore, light on depth and story
In the 1980s, a slew of manly man
action movies graced (?) the silver screen,
showcasing bullet proof muscle bound
hunks who could mow down a wellequipped
army and rescue any and all
hostages with nary a slicked back piece of
hair out of place. Throughout the succeeding
decades, these B-films have lost their
standing with the general audience but
have managed to cement their place in the
world of problematic film nostalgia.
Occasionally, movie studios have tried
to revive this questionably beloved subgenre
with little successes here and there.
Lately, they have found their niche with
films that feature a leaner assassin who
sports a wry grin and a wink at the audience
as they both poke fun at their more
muscled relatives.
But “Extraction,” the latest film to try
its hand at B-movie action lore, is not like
those movies. It is a more sincere throwback
to the greats (?) of the 1980s and really
goes all in on the pointless violence without
the wry grin. Like its counterparts, it
tries to offer moments of depth while
simultaneously refusing to examine human
emotion.
In this more pointedly serious look at
the manly man film, Chris Hemsworth
plays Tyler Rake, who, despite his name, is
not the hero in a series of romantic novels.
Instead, Tyler is a mercenary who struggles
with hidden grief through a combination
of pills and booze, plunging off of steep
cliffs and accepting kill contracts for a
hefty sum.
Upon coming home from minutes of
quiet, underwater contemplation, he is
offered a new and different contract by his
handler: rescue the son of a jailed crime
lord and receive the biggest payload of his
career.
With orders that he can kill anyone in
his way — just as long as the boy is not
harmed, that is — Tyler and his small crew
undertake the dangerous mission to
extract Ovi Mahajan (Rudhraksh Jaiswal)
from the clutches of a rival drug lord in a
major city center in India. Naturally, it
takes the highly skilled Tyler only minutes
to perform this task. (And he even dispatches
a foe with a rake!)
But as the duo are making their barelya-sweat-broken-escape,
they are accosted
by a seemingly endless amount of police,
soldiers and ordinary citizens on the payroll
of rival drug lord and kidnapper Amir
Asif (Priyanshu Painyuli). Tyler, quickly
realizing that this is proving to be his most
perilous mission yet, has to examine that
sliver of feeling he has left and determine
whether the innocent Ovi is worth the risk.
Disregarding the faux depth presented
in the film, the action scenes in
“Extraction” are top notch. While I’m not a
big fan of shoot-em-up movies, I do appreciate
a highly choreographed knife fight and
that is what “Extraction” gives. The director,
Sam Hargrave, cut his teeth choreographing
battle scenes in the Marvel comic
movies and his skill really comes through
but in a much bloodier way.
But action is really all “Extraction” has
going for it, that and missed opportunities.
While billing itself as a more serious action
offering, it skimps on the examination of
the harmful cycle of violence and the physical
and emotional damage loss can have on
a person. I’m not looking for an honest look
at the horrors of violence in a violent action
film, but a little awareness and reflection
would have gone a long way.
Another real loss is the decision to put
Randeep Hooda in a secondary position. In
the film, he plays Saju Rav, a subordinate
of Ovi’s father who is tasked with rescuing
the kidnapped teen. While he would have
been willing to do it anyway as he does care
for the boy, Ovi’s father ordered him to do
so under threat of the lives of his own wife
and child. Saju is a morally complex character
and this film would have been a great
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
vehicle for Hooda as
the primary character.
That is not to say
that Hemsworth is a
bad choice, however,
but he is a strange
actor in the sense
that his charisma waxes and wanes with
the type of role he is playing. In this role as
the great Tyler Rake, he comes across as
the dull stoic and not the damaged stoic I
think was meant for his character. He can
pull off the “manly man” persona though.
With all of that said, if you don’t mind
your B-movie throwback action flick to be
full of bullets and grunts in the place of dialogue,
I think you’ll find some enjoyment in
this film. But if you’re looking for something
with a bit more humor or depth, you
might want to skip past this one.
State tax due date extended
The Ohio Tax Commissioner announced the state of Ohio and
all Ohio municipalities will match the extended July 15, 2020 federal
income tax due date for returns and taxes originally due April
15, 2020.
This deferment applies to all taxpayers, including individuals,
trusts and estates, corporations and other non-corporate tax filers
as well as those who pay self-employment tax.
Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the
IRS, the municipality or the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA)
to qualify for this automatic tax filing and payment relief.
Business and individual taxpayers who need additional time to
file beyond the July 15 deadline can request a filing extension by
submitting Form 4868 through their tax professional, tax software
or with the IRS. Businesses who need additional time must file
Form 7004 with the IRS. Please note that any extension granted
to a taxpayer who files a Form 4868 or Form 7004 is based on the
original due date of April 15; i.e., a six-month extension would
make the new filing due date Oct. 15 with a pay due date of July
15.
Taxes due prior to April 15, 2020 are not affected by the automatic
extension and should be paid.
First and second quarter estimated tax deadline has been
extended to July 15, 2020. Penalties and interest will begin to
accrue on any remaining unpaid balances as of July 16, 2020. You
will automatically avoid interest and penalties on the taxes paid
by July 15.
Visit the IRS coronavirus web page at www.irs.gov for additional
information.
A graduation to remember
A local family with six high school seniors graduating in the class of 2020, the cousins, who were graduating
from area high schools on the same day, were heartbroken because their family would not be able
to see them in their caps and gowns. Then an aunt scheduled a photo shoot for all of them. This not only
provided their grandma and aunts - Jewell Tilley, Jodie Sanders and Rhonda Snyder - with the opportunity
to see them in their caps and gowns, but also to capture a record of their memorable 2020 graduation.
The graduates are from left to right: Cree Tilley, Bishop Ready; Alex McCafferty, Highland; Chris
