On Tuesday, May 12, the
Semans and District Fire
crew responded to a grass
fire walking the CN tracks west of
Semans. With the wind and dry
A gust
and a rink
conditions, the fire grew and spread
quickly. With the help of local farmers,
they were able to contain and
control the blaze. Greenshields and
Sauls provided their discs, which
helped to stop the spread in the
fields along the tracks. Ryan Harley
of the Nokomis Fire Dept stopped on
his way by to assist the Semans crew.
We are fortunate to have such an
active fire crew to respond to these
situations. People in the area much
appreciate the time and effort of the
volunteers.
High winds went through Strasbourg Saturday
afternoon and damaged the roof at the Strasbourg
Recreation Centre. On Sunday morning, A crew was
assessing and working on the damaged area.
Winds in other parts of Saskatchewan reportedly
reached up to 80 km/h caused by an Alberta
descending from the Alberta area.
2019 Lip-sync Fundraiser
Giving back to the community has become a yearly ritual for Brennan Zurowski. He lives in
Regina Beach, but the volunteer work that he does benefits people everywhere.
It’s because Zurowski has committed himself to raise money to support the MS Society. He
feels it’s important to give back to an organization that has already offered so much support to
him personally.
Zurowski was diagnosed with MS in August 2013.
It’s why the following year, he got involved in what’s known as the MS bike tour. Essentially
he’d organize a team that raised money in pledges and sponsorship. They’d accomplish this by
hosting events like a steak night fundraiser at the local The Waterfront Beach Bar & Grill in
Regina Beach. Last year the fundraising included an energetic evening of lip-sync competition.
And of course, Brennan has taken part in the actual bike tour for several years now.
These efforts have raised anywhere from six to eight thousand dollars each spring for the MS
Agri-Food Pilot begins accepting
applications May 15
May 15, 2020—Ottawa—The Honourable
Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister
of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship,
announced that effective today,
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
Canada (IRCC) will begin accepting
applications to the Agri-Food Pilot.
The 3-year pilot will test an industry-specific
approach to help employers
in the meat processing, mushroom and
greenhouse production, and livestock-raising
industries fill ongoing
labour needs for full-time, year-round
employees. It will provide a pathway to
permanent residence for many temporary
foreign workers already in Canada.
A total of 2,750 applications will be
accepted annually throughout the pilot,
which applies primarily to people who
are already in Canada. Existing travel
restrictions continue to apply.
Canada is committed to attracting
the best talent from around the world
through the Temporary Foreign Workers
Program to fill skills shortages,
drive local economies, and create and
support middle-class jobs in communities
across the country that will benefit
all Canadians.
The Agri-Food Pilot complements
Canada’s existing suite of economic
immigration programs, which includes
the Atlantic Immigration Pilot, the
Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot,
the caregivers pilots, the Global Skills
Strategy, a revitalized Express Entry
and the Provincial Nominee Program.
The success of our Canadian farmers
and food processors depends on their
ability to recruit and retain the workforce
that they need. This pilot will
help to ensure that employers in the
agriculture and agri-food sector have
much needed skills and labour so we
can strengthen Canada’s food security,
grow our economy and improve living
standards for all of Canada.
Endorses Peter MacKay for Federal
Conservative Leader
Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan MP
Tom Lukiwski today announced his
endorsement of Peter MacKay in the
federal Conservative leadership race.
“I have known and worked with Peter
for a long time, since the reunification
of the Conservative Party, and I regard
him as a friend and trusted colleague.
After many long one-on-one discussions
with Peter, I have concluded that
he is the best choice to lead the Conservative
Party into the next election,” said
Lukiwski.
“While I am endorsing Peter, I firmly
believe that the most important principle
of this leadership race is party
loyalty and unity. No matter who wins
Reaching into the past for a better
pandemic supply plan
Some vital economic sectors require government support and
protection in order to grow and mature and not be held hostage to
foreign influence
An old and obscure
economic theory should
have shaped the Canadian
response to the COVID-19
global pandemic. Sometimes
we need to go back
to find the right path
forward.
The infant industry argument
was first proposed
Constantine Passaris by Alexander Hamilton in
1791. He made a case for
the United States government to protect fledgling
industries against some imports from the United
Kingdom.
Implementing that argument as Canada’s response
to global pandemics could have saved us
a lot of sleepless nights and considerable
heartache when COVID-19
reached our shores.
There’s no denying that the worldwide
spread of the coronavirus
turned out to be a devastating and
destructive biological tsunami.
The infant industry argument
takes its name from the process of
raising a child from birth to adulthood.
Just like a child requires the
love, nurturing and support of its
parents in order to grow through
the phases of childhood, adolescence
and adulthood, some vital
economic sectors require government
support and protection in
order to grow and mature.
In effect, some industries need more time to
work out the kinks and problems in their production
process and become efficient in their economic
mission. In most cases, those industries
are central to the economic profile of the nation
and they need to be protected to ensure a domestic
supply chain of their products.
In the present context, the infant industry
argument is an economic theory about an
inconvenient truth regarding globalization and
unfettered international trade. It’s also a teaching
moment that reveals the importance of economic
history as our intellectual anchor and our public
policy compass. Referencing our economic history
allows us to avoid repeating the mistakes of
the past and chart an enlightened course for the
future.
Most economists embrace international trade
as distinctly beneficial for consumers, business
and government. These benefits manifest themselves
in the form of lower retail prices for consumer
products, employment creation, raising
our standard of living and growing our economy.
However, those same economists simultaneously
note that there are exceptions to this general
rule. Those special cases are sectors of the
economy that are vital to national security; areas
where we must ensure the uninterrupted supply
of certain products and services.
Canada and most provinces and territories
were caught completely unprepared when it came
to adequate supplies of personal protective equipment
(PPE) and the broken links in our supply
chains.
PPE is the first line of protection and the
medical armour for our doctors and nurses, who
rely on them to stay safe while treating highly
contagious patients. Across Canada, the pandemic
revealed an acute shortage of protective
garments, gloves, masks, face shields, respirators
and other medical equipment needed to fight this
aggressive virus.
Canada learned the hard way that the globalization
of production had exposed us to supply
chain vulnerabilities. Resorting to the infant industry
argument would have been our insurance
policy and the antidote to exposing our country’s
economy to supply chain uncertainty and unpredictability.
While we should embrace the benefits of international
trade, we should also continue to pay
premiums for insurance in the form of the infant
industry argument. This will prevent us from
facing the pitfalls of an inadequate supply of vital
products.
Our playbook for dealing effectively with
global pandemics should include an element of
self-sufficiency in the production of vital medical
equipment.
Never again should we expose our country to
the vulnerability of being dependent on foreign
products that are central to our health and
well-being.
Dr. Constantine Passaris is a professor of
Economics at the University of New Brunswick.
RCMP REPORT
Saskatchewan RCMP
officer injured near Biggar,
Saskatchewan
On May 14, 2020 at approximately
11:40 p.m., the Saskatchewan RCMP’s
Emergency Response Team (ERT) was
preparing to execute a search warrant
at a residence in a rural area, 27 km
north of Biggar, Saskatchewan, as part
of an ongoing investigation into drug
trafficking.
While the officers were preparing to
execute the search warrant, shots were
fired in their direction. One of the officers
sustained a non-life threatening
gunshot injury. The officer received
initial medical treatment from RCMP
officers with the Saskatchewan RCMP
Emergency Medical Response Team
(EMRT). EMRT officers are part of
the ERT and are trained to assist with
medical emergencies, such as gunshot
wounds, to get injured police officers
to the next step of medical care.
Officers continued with the execution
of the search warrant and an adult
male and an adult female were taken
into custody without incident.
RCMP - Found human remains
confirmed to be missing youth
On May 7th, Punnichy RCMP
received a report of human remains
located on a small island on the Muskowekwan
First Nation. It was reported
that two male youth were paddling
a boat in a small body of water on the
Muskowekwan First Nation looking
for geese eggs when they stopped to
explore a small island. While they
were looking around the island the
youth discovered human remains.
Officers from Punnichy RCMP went
to the location, confirmed the presence
of human remains, and secured the
scene for further investigation. Investigators
from the RCMP Historical
Case Unit – South deployed to the location
to assist with the investigation.
An autopsy was completed on May
13 by a Forensic Pathologist and
Anthropologist and the remains were
confirmed to be Cody Ridge Wolfe who
went missing in April of 2011. Based
on information gathered during the
investigation and autopsy Cody’s death
is not considered suspicious.
Since Cody went missing, many
searches were conducted on foot,
horseback, boat and ATV by the family,
Muskowekwan First Nation community
and the Saskatchewan RCMP.
The area where the Cody was discovered
was surrounded by water and had
become submerged intermittently over
the years, with the water level remaining
high, and only recently became
exposed.
Note: RCMP news is distributed
hourly by the RCMP Media
Centre in Regina, based
on reports submitted by local
detachments throughout the
province. If no reports are received,
SPORTS
CFL’s future may hinge on Gov’t assistance
The risk is real: The CFL may
FROM THE become Canada’s Forgotten
SIDELINES
League. Out of sight, out of mind.
That’s the observation made
BRUCE PENTON
by Lyle Bauer, former Canadian
Football League player and
executive with Winnipeg Blue
Bombers and Calgary Stampeders,
after Commissioner Randy
Ambrosie gave ominous state-ofthe-CFL
comments as they relate
to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Ambrosie met with federal
government officials in early May
to plead his league’s case for a financial bailout. The
league is hanging by a thread, he said, and a full season
with no football — or a truncated schedule played
in front of reduced crowds, or no crowds — would be
disastrous.
He asked for $150 million. A decision is apparently
pending, but public opinion seems to be on the side of
‘no’. A sports league’s future in the midst of a global
pandemic where thousands of people are dying is low
on a priority list of a government dealing with life
and death matters, not to mention the basic economic
foundation of our country.
Still, isn’t the CFL a major part of our country’s
economy? Don’t millions of people make weekly treks
to football stadiums across Canada to watch professional
football players provide terrific entertainment
for those in the stands plus millions of others
watching on TV? Doesn’t TSN pay a few million a
year to the league to broadcast games to the masses?
Aren’t the nine CFL teams responsible for thousands
of jobs for Canadians — not even counting the football
players themselves, more than half of whom are
born-and-bred Canadians? And what would become
of Grey Cup Sunday, almost a national holiday in
Canada?
The Trudeau government in the past has been
quick to shell out big dough to huge corporations like
Bombardier; why not a big corporation like the CFL?
If Gymnastics Canada can receive $72 million in
government funding, shouldn’t the CFL’s request be a
non-brainer?
One year with no football could be a death knell
for the CFL, which lives and dies by people paying
money at the gate to watch the action. A media report
suggested six of the nine teams — Calgary, Edmonton,
Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Ottawa
— scrape by with little or no profit, while the other
three — Toronto, Montreal and B.C. — lose millions of
dollars. A Postmedia story in the Winnipeg Sun had
Bauer saying that the league lost $20 million last year
“when there were no disruptions.” He feared for the
league’s future if the 2020 season is wiped out.
Millions of Canadians who are out of work these
days are sitting at home collecting government assistance
cheques. A bailout for the CFL makes sense if
the alternative is the league’s extinction.
RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Eight years ago
Canada began phasing out its penny. Thus ended
great Canadian traditions like penny jars, penny-ante
poker and CFL signing bonuses.”
Advice from Jack Finarelli, The Sports Curmudgeon:
“Any golf writer who focuses on anything Tiger
Woods says or does in a tournament where Woods is
15 shots off the lead should be banned from covering
golf and made to cover camel racing in Saudi Arabia.”
The late Doug Sanders, who famously missed a
30-inch putt that would have given him the 1970
British Open: “‘They still ask me if I ever think
about that putt I missed to win the 1970 Open at St.
Andrews,’ he said years later. ‘I tell them sometimes
it doesn’t cross my mind for a full five minutes.’”
Norman Chad of the Washington Post: “Kristin
Cavallari and Jay Cutler are getting a divorce. She
finally looked at his NFL stats.”
Chad, on the many differences between himself
and Tom Brady, now of the Tampa Bay Bucs: “Brady
advocates drinking 1/32nd of one’s body weight in
water each day. I buy Orange Crush by the keg. He
launched his own line of vegan snacks. I eat Fritos
and Bugles.”
Brad Dickson of Omaha, who lives in a state where
COVID-19 is rampant: “Nebraska’s no COVID-19
plan: All citizens are going to line the border
throughout the state and scream “GO BIG RED” to
scare the virus away.”
From ESPN, via fark.com: “New Cowboys quarterback
Andy Dalton eyes the upcoming season as a
setup to ‘second half’ of career, which means he may
bounce around a few teams sitting on their bench.”
Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Spotted in
Lady Gaga’s bizarre shoe collection: a pair of high
heels with toes made from horses’ hooves. On the
Mind The Gap
Ever felt that sense of disengagement
that seems to sap
your strength and stamina
hindering you from feeling free
to pursue more in your relationships,
your work, and even in
your own mind and heart? It’s a
general sense of feeling distant
from the things that you know
are better but just have a hard
time stepping into. . .
On a small scale, it’s when
you know you shouldn’t buy
that bag of chips and dip and
binge-watch the latest Netflix
series, but you just don’t seem
to have the necessary will to
go and treadmill instead. Or
on a bigger scale, it’s when you
know that you shouldn’t speak
that harsh word to your son or
daughter because it won’t help
anyone in the long run. Still,
that sense of disengagement
causes you to express your frustration
instead of moving into
something far more productive
and nurturing.
Disengagement from better,
more wholesome, productive
and life-giving things...we all
experience it, and we all sometimes
feel helpless to avoid it.
Brene Brown, a sociologist
and cultural observer, suggests
this important idea to help us
to overcome this ‘gap’ between
what we often feel/do and what
we should feel/do. She says:
“We can’t give people what we
don’t have. Who we are matters
immeasurably more than what
we know or who we want to be.”
(Daring Greatly, page 176)
Who we are matters the most.
Not what we have learned or
what we think we know, but
who we are.
And who we are is so much
more than just the name we
have and the accomplishments
or influence we exert. ‘Who we
are’ goes right down to the essence
of what makes me, me.
Maybe the most important aspect
of discovering who we are
is found in those who have the
capacity to create who we are.
How long do you think that list
is? In my mind, it stops right
around .1. God made each of us.
He desires that each of us find
ourselves in our true identity,
and that true identity is in relationship
with Him.
And so Jesus makes a way
back into real life.
When you admit that to Jesus,
MINISTERIAL MESSAGES
that you want more out of life
that you can’t get on your own,
then you begin to open the possibility
of living engaged!
It says in Romans 8:39 that
nothing can separate a person
from the love of God. That is
His fundamental attitude toward
you and I. But, our experience
of that love is hindered by
the fact that we have disengaged
from Him.
If you want to overcome that
sense of disengagement in your
life, then maybe it’s time to
consider engaging with Jesus
and letting His love transform
you into everything you were
designed to be!
Many blessings on you on
your journey.
Society. That money supports on-going research
into a cause for and finding a cure for the disease.
The funds also help provide low-cost treatments
for those who live with multiple sclerosis and
activities which provide education about the
disease as well as other programming.
Things are different in 2020. Because of concerns
about COVID-19, there will be no physical
bike tour and no social gatherings like hosting
fundraising events.
That isn’t stopping Zurowski and his team, who
call themselves the C&C Realty MSaries. They
are committed to continuing to raise money for
MS as they have done for almost a decade now.
But, since they won’t be heading out on the road
as usual, Zurowski has come up with a new idea.
Along with his sister Jinelle this year’s plan is
to produce and sell local cookbooks that contain
recipes of family-favourite meals. Jinelle says the
book should be ready for sale sometime in June
and that the name of the book will be - Recipe
for a Cure. “We plan on using social media as a
platform for selling the cookbooks that will cost
$20 per book. We will provide contactless pick
up in the Regina Beach area and will also have a
scheduled drop off in Regina.”
Jinelle put out a call on Facebook asking that
tried and true recipes be sent to her via email
jinellezurowski@gmail.com. Within just a couple
of days, she says the response was great and
that people continue to send in ideas on how to
prepare their best-loved meals. “And keep them
coming,” she says, “we are always looking for
more recipes to include.”
She’s confident that the cookbook will be a
success and that people in the community will
support this effort by purchasing one. Already
she says pre-orders for the book have been placed
and that local businesses in Regina Beach have
agreed to sell it in their stores once it is produced.
“We’ll do our best to reach our goal just as
we’ve been doing for years.”
Winner, Mackenzie Van Damme
Mackenzie was raised
on a farm just outside
of Imperial, Saskatchewan
and has always had a
passion for agriculture.
Mackenzie is part of a long
farming family history. Van
Damme farms was established
over a century ago, in 1908.
It began as a mixed beef and
grain operation and today it’s a
grain-only operation. With over
7,000 acres of land, Mackenzie’s
family grows several crops,
including oilseeds, cereal grains
and pulses.
In Mackenzie’s award winning
essay submission, she highlighted
the impact of agriculture on
Saskatchewan, specifically on
her own community, Imperial.
“This industry has benefited our
community in numerous ways
and without agriculture, Imperial
would be little more than a
ghost town,” she writes. Mackenzie
also raises an interesting
discussion in her essay about
the use of genetically modified
organisms, new technology in
the agriculture sector and how
innovation has modernized
farms and increased sustainability
across the industry.
Mackenzie will be furthering
her education at the University
of Saskatchewan. She plans to
obtain a Bachelor’s of Science
in Agriculture with a focus on
Agronomy.
Voices railing against science
lmtimes.ca
Overheard at the coffee shop
7
AG NOTES
CALVIN DANIELS
It was interesting, although
hardly surprising, to see a recent
article in the agricultural
press suggesting growth
in Ag technology coming out
of the COVID-19 pandemic.
That is a statement that
could be applied to a host
of sectors post COVID-19,
from the obvious medical
research, the logistics of food
distribution to in-store bio-security
and more.
Of course, a spike in technology post-crisis is
very much the norm for humanity. We, as a species,
have always done a rather admirable job of
creating solutions to problems through science.
When our backs are to a wall, science becomes
focused on solutions and is generally rather
successful.
While those solutions might be to a rather
specific problem, the knowledge gained through
the process often opens doors to more discoveries
and foster new solutions to a myriad of other
issues.
Little discoveries made on the path to creating
a COVID-19 vaccine, or treatment, will ultimately
be used to aid in the research into other diseases.
Similarly, solutions to the range of problems
COVID-19 has thrust on us will go into dealing
with other things, once the current situation is
under control and the journals filled with new
science can be studied and applied to other situations
and problems. That is why remaining true
to science is so critical to our future. It is our only
hope in dealing with whatever crisis we face as a
species, whether that crisis is one emerging from
the world around us, or one we have created by
human blundering.
Recognizing that science is at times our folly
as a species, it is also the only avenue to salvation,
whether that means a bold new discovery,
or merely the creation of enough knowledge that
we learn from our mistakes and change our ways
toward a better future.
That is why few things in our world today are
scarier than the voices railing against science.
To abandon science is to leave us with no base
on which to expand our knowledge. It would be a
slow and dangerous decline into some new dark
age where we have lost sight of how to best assure
new solutions to existing and future problems.
The voices against science are, of course, a
curious lot, using as they do social media to rally
people to their cause. Few people, especially in
Canada and the United States, go through a day
without utilizing what science has created, from
pasteurized milk, open-heart surgery, to electricity,
fibre optics, computers, the internal combustion
engine, and the list goes on.
Science is not always successful, and not every
discovery is as positive as we might hope once in
our hands, but it is the place from which our best
future can emerge.
Parkdale’s columns add European flair
By Associated Designs
Two sleek columns lend a classic
European look to the Parkdale,
a contemporary ranch-style home
with nearly 3,000 square feet of
living space. The 14-foot columns
support a lofty porch roof.
Just inside the door, two narrow
columns echo their exterior counterparts
while bounding the wide
passageway that links the foyer
and great room. Both of these areas,
plus the dining room, have
10-foot ceilings.
Multipaned windows fill most
of the great room’s rear wall. A
that lead out onto a covered patio
are also capped by a wide transom.
A large home entertainment center
spans most of one wall. On the opposite
mark the wide opening to
the dining room. This, too, is a
Wanuskewin Welcomes
Mother’s Day Surprise
Wanuskewin is delighted to once
again announce the birth of a baby
bison … three baby bison to be exact.
Incredibly, these babies arrived on
auspicious days, with the first calf arriving
on Earth Day, the third arriving
on May 5th Red Dress Day, and the
last calf arriving on Mother’s Day May
10th. This new generation of bison is
comprised of three females and one
male and are the offspring of a new
herd of bison with ancestral ties back
to Yellowstone National Park.
This remarkable group of four calves
is the first generation of bison babies
to be born on this land since the signing
of Treaty Six in 1876. Bison nearly
became extinct in the late 1800’s
dwindling from some 30 million
throughout the Great Plains to fewer
than 1000. It is the descendants of
these last remaining animals that have
found a new home at Wanuskewin as a
conservation herd.
Wanuskewin Chief Executive Officer,
Darlene Brander, is quoted: “Already,
based on their birthdays we know
these bison have an incredible sense
of timing! It is an honour for our park
to welcome these magnificent creatures
back to their natural territory.
We lay down tobacco to give thanks
for their arrival and look forward to
sharing this herd with all of the world.
They have become a powerful symbol
of hope and resilience during these
trying times of isolation.”
Bison are a keystone species and
are essential in the health and establishment
of the Grasslands ecosystem.
Wanuskewin has undertaken a
Grasslands restoration project that has
reclaimed a full section of land previously
used for agricultural practices
within the park border. Native Prairie
Grasslands are the most endangered
ecosystem in the world and require
bison to act as a critical link in the
food chain.
Wanuskewin Board Chair and co-
Chair of the Thundering Ahead Capital
Campaign, Felix Thomas stated: “By
introducing bison back to the land we
will be adding that essential element
needed for balance in both a cultural
and scientific sense. We aim to grow
the park to act as a natural oasis within
the city limits that will offer a place
for families to come and connect with
the land once again.”
We kindly remind the public that
all of Wanuskewin’s trails and facilities
remain closed due to COVID-19.
Wanuskewin will reopen during phase
four of the Re-Open Saskatchewan
Strategy.
pickup in history has, is a long slide-out compartment to hold rifles or fishing
poles. I’ve seen cars that come with luggage, umbrella holders, golf club pockets,
but nothing like this. Sadly, the Powell brothers hardly got started and had
to shut down with many orders left undelivered. Not because they ran out of
money, and not because of labour issues, but because they ran out of junkyard
parts. I guess it was bound to happen, but I kind of wish they’d have kept with it
and emptied the junkyards of the next best thing. Not sure what that would have
been, or what they would have used it for, but it’s a better way to recycle than
just sending everything to the crusher.
