WELCOME
The
Issue 312
May 2020
Hello Welcome
AS we continue in lockdown, we
remain extremely grateful to the
NHS and other key workers for their
efforts in keeping us all safe and well.
The Garage would like to thank them
all for their dedication and hard work during
this period.
Last week, the Government slightly relaxed
measures and actively encouraged people
who cannot work from home to return to
work where safe to do so. This is good news
for our industry and of course the economy.
Throughout this pandemic, the automotive
industry has been hugely affected in all areas,
from parts distribution, manufacturing and
of course car maintenance. This has had a
profound effect on independent garages. Some
of who opened their doors to NHS and key
workers, but most were forced to close until
safe to reopen.
Now that it is possible for garages to reopen,
we feel that the Government should relax the
MOT extension that was put in place on March
30th. There will be an astronomical amount
of vehicles driving around with defects that
will be deteriorating daily whilst this extension
remains in place, endangering the lives of the
driver and other road users. With garages
to this issue of The Garage
now opening, it is the ideal time to reverse the
extension and support independent garages
and boost the economy.
During this pandemic, we will continue to
provide The Garage Magazine in digital format
for the next few issues. We feel that this is the
best form of delivery and we encourage you to
register via our website to continue to receive
the publication in digital form.
In this issue, we talk to Kyle Harris managing
director of Auto Logistics Solutions about the
use of green parts and how the current climate
could act as an unexpected catalyst of change.
Also in this issue, we look at rotating electrics
and Bill Fennel from The Motor Ombudsman,
give us his view from the top.
I hope that you enjoy the issue and please,
all stay safe and well.
Enjoy the issue!
NEWS
THE COVID-19 EFFECT
How a global pandemic could change parts supply in the UK
Kyle Harris, managing director of Auto Logistic
Solutions, looks at the current debate surrounding
the use of green parts – and how the Corona virus
could act as an unexpected catalyst of change.
ON the face of it, reusing
undamaged,
non-critical used
parts from end-oflife
and written-off
vehicles sounds like a good
idea. Given the huge pressure
from the EU in Brussels and
the public at large, it seems
an awful waste to throw away
perfectly adequate parts such
as bumpers, panels and other
non-core replacement only to
use brand new items which
add no discernible value. In
principle, a more widespread
use of these ‘green parts’ as
they are known is not the stupidest
idea to be considered
by the garage industry.
However, given the longstanding
rules and regulations
concerning driver safety
and spare parts, this idea is
fraught with difficulties when
looking to introduce the concept
to the UK motor trade.
Much of this challenge arises
from the historic relationship
between drivers, repairers
and insurers – and the very
specific nature of that relationship.
Moreover, even if
this contractual hurdle was
easy to jump, there still remains
the matter of safety.
Which parts would be okay
to re-use and which would
not? Could the adoption of
a ‘green parts’ culture lead
to a two tier motoring industry
– whereby the ‘haves’ enjoy
pristine OE parts, while
the ‘have nots’ make do with
‘greens’?
So who are the main protagonists
in favour of the green
parts initiative? First up is
insurance giant Axa’s MD of
underwriting and technical
services. He has been at the
forefront of the green parts
lobby, arguing that their use
should be more widespread.
David has been very open
about his support for used
parts. He recently said: “The
biggest thing stopping the
insurer’s adoption of green
parts in this country (as they
control the vast majority
of repair costs), is…people
saying that insurers are going
to make vehicles unsafe’.
Granted, when interviewed at
a leading industry conference
(ATF 2020) he went on to say
there is no proof of this, but
converting public opinion is
key to its adoption.
While there are challenges
to the use of green parts from
both legal and indemnity perspectives,
he believes that the
weight of opinion towards a
more environmentally aware
aftermarket is inevitable.
Thinking about greater
awareness of climate change
and the impact of Brexit, David
believes we are approaching
a tipping point for the
adoption of green parts. He
may be right and the impact
to the supply chain of the
Covid-19 virus can only add
further momentum to this
argument. On balance David
makes some very valid points
– highlighting the influence of
vested interests within the industry
to resist change.
My only observation would
be to question the interests
of the insurance industry
and whether a shift to green
parts would benefit the endconsumer
or insurers most?
I may be cynical, or simply
experienced, but the insurance
monoliths may be looking
to improve their own bottom
lines and shareholder
value as opposed to being the
motorist’s champion!
On the other side of this
debate are independent consultants
such as Tim Kelly,
who runs a business called
Motor Claim Guru, which
provides training and guidance
on a host of car insurance
matters.
Tim’s views on Green Parts
centre on a clearer understanding
of three terms that
are often used in the motor
trade – insurance, indemnity
and contract. He thinks these
well-established terms are
widely misunderstood – and
are being potentially undermined
by the introduction of
green parts.
Tim is something of an expert
when it comes to the ins
and outs of motor insurance.
He points out the following:
“Whether this be in home, pet
or motor insurance, the contract
of insurance is there to
provide ‘financial restitution’
for your loss. To do this, the
insurance ‘promises’ by way
of the contract to provide
‘indemnity’ for the financial
loss experienced. Often misunderstood,
Indemnity is
a contractual obligation to
compensate the insured for
the ‘financial” loss they have
sustained.
“This has nothing to do
with repairing cars as insurers
would have you believe,”
he says. “When an insurer
acts as the ‘agent’ of repair,
it ‘may’ be acting in conflict
with their own client’s interest.”
Tim reckons if you look
up section 8.3.3 of the Financial
Conduct Authority’s
booklet on general insurance
(ICOBS), it clearly states insurers
should take all reasonable
steps to identify (and
avoid) conflicts of interest.
Commentators such as Tim
clearly think that insurers
driving for the adoption of
cheaper, green parts crosses
a line here. “Doing this effectively
disadvantages their
customers,” he adds. ”It
may seem like I’m splitting
hairs, but if green parts become
widespread within the
industry, it could adversely
affect the rights of the endcustomer.
It would also have
a big impact on the potential
profits for garages as insurers
may seek to control this
part of the supply chain.”
Is there a win;win situation
for all involved? Could
we devise a system whereby
non-safety critical green
parts were available without
the potential to ‘disadvantage’
the end-customer?
I think if this were to happen,
there would need to be
regulatory change and new
contractual agreements with
drivers. If a new customer
was advised of the insurer’s
green parts policy at the
point of sale, prior to the
agreement, then it would be
a ‘legal’ contract. Even better,
insurers could develop a
new portfolio of ‘green’ products
- incentivising them to
drivers by offering a reduced
premium.
Innovation that address climate
change from the insurance
industry has to be welcomed
as a step forward. A
scheme to disadvantage drivers,
workshops and improve
insurer’s margins should be
treated with the suspicion it
deserves.

BOGNOR AUTOMOTIVE GIANTS
TEAM UP TO HELP KEYWORKERS
GLOBAL automotive parts
supplier WAIglobal UK,
based in Bognor Regis,
has teamed up with
Bognor Motors to offer 100
emergency services workers and NHS
staff a free vehicle disinfectant clean,
using its new product STERI-7.
WAI’s latest product, Steri-7,
thoroughly disinfects the inside of a
vehicle and kills 99.99 percent of all
bacteria, viruses and spores on the
surface. Once the inside of the vehicle
has been left to dry, a reactive barrier
is created on the surface, which will
then regenerate to give up to seven
days’ added protection.
NHS staff and emergency workers
interested in the free vehicle interior
clean simply need to call up Bognor
Motors on 01243 865515.
Bognor Motors has been
instrumental, through its garage and
vehicle hire business, in keeping
many trades moving throughout
the pandemic and operates a
zero contact policy as part of its
adherence to government social
distancing measures. The garage will
also arrange collection of a vehicle to
undertake servicing and MOT work,
before dropping it back to its owner.
WAI, based in Durban Road,
Bognor, supplies automotive
components but, thanks to its global
supply chain links has been able
to source and donate much needed
personal protective equipment (PPE)
to charities, hospices and hospitals
across the UK.
Oliver Hicklin, director of Bognor
Motors said: “As part of government
guidelines, we are allowed to remain
open and have prioritised NHS and
emergency services workers. Through
this latest intiative with WAI, we are
delighted to be able to offer even greater
reassurance, in addition to our zero
contact policy, by sanitising the inside of
their vehicle.”
Richard Welland, WAIglobal UK
managing director, added: “The
automotive industry is playing an
essential role in helping to keep
keyworkers on the road and I’m
delighted to be partnering with Bognor
Motor on this fabulous initiative.
Furthermore, our global supply chain
expertise is enabling us to provide muchneeded
PPE to those that need it during
this very difficult time.”
VIEW FROM THE TOP
Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing
Director at The Motor Ombudsman, looks at..
HOW ADVERSITY CAN BE TURNED INTO
A SERIES OF POSITIVES FOR TODAY’S
GARAGES
AS we enter unchartered
waters due to the
proliferation of the
Coronavirus (COVID-19),
it’s important that, as a
business owner, we adopt a positive
mindset and look at how businesses
are going to navigate this period
of uncertainty. When facing an
unforeseen challenge that few would
have ever predicted or imagined,
there’s a need to step back and look
at what you’re offering customers now,
and what you can do to provide even
greater value once a stable trading
environment resumes.
With the government recognising
the important role that garages play in
helping to keep the country moving,
vehicle repairers and tyre fitters have
been classed as an essential business
in recent guidance. For those that
are struggling with their cash flow
in the immediate term, there is also
assistance to call on to help pay
wages, and loans to bridge any gaps in
income.
In fact, there’s a strong case for
beating the drum to show customers
that you’re open for business, and
maintaining relationships with them
during this temporary pause of
daily life is as crucial as ever. In the
modern age, we are fortunate to have
the advantage of technology to help
us stay in touch with consumers and
key stakeholders, all at the click of
a button, and often at very little or
no cost. Although non-urgent vehicle
maintenance work may have to go on
the backburner for the time being, this
is the time when a difference can be
made, and where thinking outside the
box can pay off in what is becoming a
‘contactless’ period.
New measures, if they are not
already in place, can be as simple
as having MOT and servicing e-mail
reminders or an online or phone
booking system, to make it easy for
consumers to arrange a service or
MOT without the need for personal
interaction, and to help keep a
continuous business pipeline. In
addition, a vehicle drop off and
collection service will be particularly
beneficial, as long it is of course safe to
do so, and the necessary precautions
are equally taken by staff. Reassuring
motorists that you have a clean and
hygienic environment whilst the car is
in your care, and that staff are acting
in their interests to protect both them
and their business from the risks of
transmission, may also prove to be
a good way of helping to maintain
custom in this more trying period.
And finally, once the work has been
completed, an online invoicing and
card payment system prior to the
return of the vehicle will once again
avoid yet another chance for what
could now be deemed an ‘unnecessary’
contact point.
Aside from the more process-driven
initiatives, there is also the need to
get more creative, in order to keep
your business front of mind and
balance sheets healthy. Cost effective
promotional activities can be online
video tutorials on things like vehicle
maintenance and its importance,
providing advice and regular updates
on social media and demonstrating
any USPs such as award wins and
local accolades.
Furthermore, your business will be
influential in ensuring key workers
stay mobile, and if there is spare
capacity to do so, lend a helping hand
to the emergency services, such as the
police, ambulance service and first
response paramedics, as their regular
repairer may have pulled the shutters
down.
To conclude my thoughts in what is
an unprecedented chapter of modern
society, it’s just as important to plan
for the future as it is for the present,
as a new era will emerge once the virus
has eventually subsided. By the time
you read my next quarterly column in
July, I would have hoped that there
will be a greater element of security,
and that something resembling
‘normality’ would have resumed. In
the meantime, if any of our accredited
businesses require our support, we
would encourage them to contact us
when they are ready to do so.

A SHIFT TOWARDS MOBILE
TYRE SERVICING WITH
E-CUBE LEADING THE CHARGE
ALTHOUGH the
COVID 19 Global
Pandemic continues
to suspend
normal positive
business activities in the
international tire and automotive
market sectors.
Netherlands based TechnoMarketing
Group (TMG)
are still working through
this extremely difficult trading
period to currently promote
their latest product
innovation the E-CUBE. A
revolutionary compact mobile
tire servicing unit which
has already captured the
profitable trading imagination
of the industry in Europe,
North America and
South East Asia.
At the same time the E-
CUBE was poised to be
launched in the UK market
during the first quarter of
2020 which has now been
delayed temporarily until
current restrictions are
lifted. In fact the COVID 19
situation has significantly
increased the number of tire
retail outlets in the UK and
Europe who are beginning
to fully recognise the value
of mobile servicing to their
business and the arrival of
E-CUBE is proving extremely
significant.
Ralph Dubbeldam, Managing
director of TMG says,
“The virus has seen a lot of
global tire retailers turn to
offering an increased mobile
service fuelling the popularity
of our E-CUBE unit through
its safety aspects including
the technician being able remove
and replace a worn tire
from its rim whilst inside
their service vehicle and also
the flexibility of offering other
profit making services including
battery charging and
re-charging air-conditioning
units during a visit to a customer.”
A perfect example of how
the E-CUBE is starting
change the way mobile tires
are fitted can be found in the
imminent partnership (with
their US partners – Gaither
Tool) at Gomobile based in
Portland, Oregon in the USA
who are about to commence
using the E-Cube onboard
their mobile tire servicing
fleet of vehicles.
Derek Naidoo, Founder
and CEO of Gomobile say,
“Up until now, traditional tire
workshop machines did not
belong in the back of a van as
they were too bulky and run
the risk of constant vibration
when driving from one customer
to another. Whilst the
E-CUBE has been specifically
designed and built for the
automotive industry around
the world as not only is it
seriously ‘space saving’ but
also emits no noise or fumes
meaning it is completely environmentally
friendly. As far
as Gomobile are concerned
E-CUBE is the ‘game-changing’
mobile tire servicing
product we have been waiting
for.”
Additional innovative
products that TMG are
currently working on include
a new-style mobile lift that
clears four wheels in seconds

DENSO REVEALS DIVERSE PRODUCT
UPDATE – STRENGTHENING VEHICLE
PARC COVERAGE
DENSO Aftermarket has released a
comprehensive new-to-range update, covering
thermal system, spark plug, wiper blade and
fuel pump component categories
plus an EV emergency charge
solution (mile per minute)
that uses E-CUBE as a power
source. Finally for the future…
TMG is developing an initial
prototype model for a totally
unique mobile alignment
solution which in due course
will further the amount of
tire related services available
MOT Wallets from
to mobile technicians. Ralph
concludes, “Companies like
Gomobile are definitely the
way forward for the worldwide
tire and automotive market
sectors and ‘post’ COVID
19’ TMG will be ready
and waiting to support
the industry as much as
possible.”
MORE than 70 new references are spread
among the product groups, which increases
the choice available to distributors and
technicians, and expands DENSO’s UK and
Ireland vehicle parc coverage.
Focusing on thermal systems first, specifically compressors
and parts for the air conditioning system, DENSO Aftermarket
has updated its range with 46 original equipment (OE) quality
part numbers – 12 compressors, two actuators, 10 resistors,
11 pressure switches and 11 expansion valves – linked to 89
OE numbers to cover an additional 2,325 vehicles.
Switching to spark plugs, a sector where DENSO has
been one of the world’s pioneers for more than 60 years,
DENSO Aftermarket has increased its Iridium Power offering
by another five OE quality references; therefore, stretching
coverage to another 61 vehicles.
Iridium Power requires a small amount of voltage to
achieve high ignitability, which greatly improves combustion
and also provides an economical benefit to the motorist;
when comparing a standard plug (W20FS-U) with an Iridium
Power (IWF22) on a two-cycle 50cc engine, for example,
tests showed a 5% improvement in fuel consumption.
On the wiper blade front, there are 19 new references
within the OE adapter flat blade range, providing coverage
to more than 800 applications and linked to 40 OE part
numbers. Flat wiper blades hug every windscreen closely
and evenly, thanks to precise tailoring to the curvature of the
windscreen, to wipe away rain and debris in even the worst
weather conditions. With sleek styling and long life, they offer
all-round appeal to every
motorist.
Each and every one of
these new part numbers is
available now, from either
DENSO’s E-catalogue or
TecDoc.
AUTOPARTS UK & MIDWEST MOTOR FACTORS
ANNOUNCE GRADUAL REOPENING
AUTOPARTS UK & Midwest
Motor Factors have slowly
started to reopen branches,
as they look to provide
clarity and continue to
support customers carrying
out essential repair work.
First on the list were
Autoparts Glasgow and
Midwest Bilston, with both
branches opening again on
27 April.
Autoparts Inverness,
Newcastle, Stoke, Aberdeen,
Trafford Park Manchester
and Sighthill Edinburgh
then followed suit, opening
on 4th May. All branches
and staff will adhere to full
social distancing measures
and government guidelines.
Craig McCracken, group
factor manager, said: “The
safety, health and wellbeing
of our staff are paramount
and we are gradually
reopening our branch
network to ensure we
continue to meet demand
from independent garages.”
Over the past few weeks,
the company has made
an enormous amount
of resources available,
providing 400 vehicles to
NHS and frontline workers
free of charge to help them
get to work.
Employees have
also responded to the
government’s call for help
and have been volunteering
within the NHS, while also
providing roadside recovery,
emergency repairs and parts
for all emergency vehicles
where necessary.
Autoparts UK, Midwest
Motor Factors and Monmore
Auto Parts have also
supplied 10,000 disposable
seat covers for use by NHS
staff.
At Autoparts UK, a team
of 10 specialist parts people
remain in place to assist
blue light workers. Each
individual will identify the
parts required, collect stock
from the branch and deliver
it to their premises or be
available for collection.
At every Arnold Clark
rental location, there are
two vehicles being used by
essential community groups
to assist local people with
food and supplies.
COVID-19 devastates motorcycle
registrations in April
“The full effect of dealership closures was felt in April
2020 with a -83.5% drop in registrations against April
2019,” said Stephen Latham, Head of the National
Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which
represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.
Just 1,623 new motorcycles were registered in April,
down from 9,820 in the previous April. Year-to-date, the
market has declined by -31.1%, from 36,951 in 2019 to
25,451 in 2020 so far.
All sectors of machine were negatively affected, with
‘touring’ motorcycles plummeting -96.3%, while even
the least affected ‘scooters’ registered a loss of -69.2%.
Honda once again was the best-selling brand with
312 new motorcycles, but preference for low powered
and cheaper vehicles allowed Lexmoto to climb to
second with 177 registrations.
Latham continued: “Most of the small number of
registrations in April are likely to have been from online
sales, with many being sold to key workers as a safe,
independent option to travel to work.
“With the ongoing lockdown, many motorcycle
businesses are looking to having a digital presence to
sell new and used bikes online. This will help them
weather the storm against them as we reach almost
two months of closures, and the NMDA will continue to
support their businesses throughout.”

IGA’s flexible
furlough scheme
proposal supported
by Chancellor
Stuart James, IGA Chief Executive
“We welcome the Chancellor’s update
and extension to the furlough scheme,
which will allow businesses to bring
staff back to work on a part-time
basis.” said Stuart James, Chief
Executive of the Independent Garage
Association (IGA).
The IGA wrote to Chancellor of
the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak on 29
April, requesting a partial furlough
scheme that would allow employees
to return to work part-time to
support businesses throughout their
reopening.
“We thank the Chancellor for
listening to the IGA’s proposal to
implement a flexible furlough scheme.
As highlighted in our letter, many
independent garages have suspended
activity since the coronavirus crisis
escalated due to the decrease in
work volumes caused by lockdown
restrictions and the MOT extension.
This support from the Government
will help independent garages with
a gradual, stable approach when
reopening.”
With the government advising commuters to
avoid public transport, people will now need
their cars more than ever.
There may be 6 months grace on MOTs, but this
doesn’t mean that cars due a test are safe and
roadworthy. There is now a backlog of tests,
servicing and essential repairs, so it’s time to
get back to work - safely and professionally.
BRIDGESTONE LOCKING DOWN
TYRE ADVICE FOR MOTORISTS
AS motorists navigate
their way
through lockdown
for more days and
weeks to come,
Bridgestone is offering some
simple tyre maintenance tips
to ensure vehicles are still
roadworthy once restrictions
are lifted.
Bridgestone’s Technical
Manager Gary Powell is already
looking ahead to the
prospect of regular driving
journeys in the future and
has devised a simple tyre
checklist for drivers to adhere
to in readiness. Many of
the checks take just minutes
to carry out and should ensure
that each tyre is in good
working order for when they
finally come in contact with
highways again.
Gary reiterated that good
tyre maintenance is an essential
activity - especially
when vehicles are parked up
for long periods.
He said: “With the Coronavirus
pandemic and extended
lockdown being announced,
it’s extremely important that
tyres are continuously maintained
during these challenging
times.
“For vehicles that are
parked up for long periods
of time, it’s essential to follow
the simple guidelines
below, so that your tyres are
maintained in good condition
during this time. Your
tyres should be checked on
a regular basis, ideally every
seven to 14 days.”
Gary’s lockdown automotive
advice in as follows:
Tyre tread:
Tyres should be visually
checked for abnormal
wear and damage (e.g. cuts,
bulges, screws, etc.). If you
identify any concerns, get the
tyre(s) inspected in more detail
by a qualified tyre technician,
when safely permitted
to do so.
Tyre inflation:
Ensure that the tyres are inflated
to their optimum operating
pressure. Tyre pressure
recommendations can
be found in the vehicle handbook
or door pillar of the vehicle.
Tyre pressures should
be checked in cold condition
with a calibrated pressure
gauge.

15 NEWS
Valve caps:
Check that valve caps are of
good quality and fitted correctly.
The valve cap prevents
dirt and moisture from getting
in and causing damage
to the valve core/stem.
Check where you’re
parked:
Ensure that your car’s tyres
are not standing in pools of
water or contaminates. Oils,
petrol and diesel, can severely
damage tyres. If you
spot these contaminates on
your tyres, then you should
remove using plenty of water
and a mild detergent. Ensure
that the tyres on your vehicle
are parked in an area where
water pooling and contaminates
are eliminated. Also,
ensure that the tyre footprint
for all tyres on the vehicle are
sitting on a flat road surface
where practically feasible
and ensure tyre sidewalls
for all tyres on the vehicle
are not depressed up against
kerbs or raised iron works,
as this could result in premature
removal due to stress or
deformation damage.
Do you have a garage?
If feasible, store your car in
it, as this will protect your
tyres from direct sunlight. If
you cannot garage your vehicle,
then try and park your
vehicle in the shade, as this
will protect the tyres from
accelerated ageing caused by
extended sunlight and UV exposure.
And finally…
When safely permitted to
travel, check the visual condition
of your tyres (e.g. cuts,
bulges, screws, etc.) and tyre
pressures before your journey.
If you identify any concerns,
please get your tyres
inspected in more detail by a
qualified tyre technician immediately.
Gary concluded, “If you follow
these simple guidelines,
then this will ensure that your
tyres are maintained in good
condition during this lockdown
period and that your
tyres are safe for when you
resume your car journeys.”
Multigrade oils from MAHLE
ensure air conditioning
compressors are
cost-effectively
and reliably
lubricated
MULTIBRAND workshops
often face challenges
during the A/C service
when it comes to
keeping a multitude
of different PAG compressor oils in
stock. Because of their hygroscopic
properties, they soon absorb water
when opened or improperly stored
and must then be disposed of.
PAO 68 oil from MAHLE is a far
more practical and cost-effective
solution for workshops. It’s suitable
for many types of compressor,
nonhygroscopic, and compatible
with numerous other lubricants and
refrigerants. Reliable lubrication
of the air conditioning compressor
is thus guaranteed whenever this
product is used.
During manufacture, special
additives are added to the base PAO
(polyalphaolefin) to ensure the oil’s
outstanding characteristics. As a
result, PAO 68 oil from MAHLE is a
unique combination of highly refined
synthetic oil and performanceenhancing
additives.
PAO 68 oil is also compatible
with many other lubricants
and refrigerants. When used in
combination with PAG oil and
refrigerants, it can be mixed with
other oils as required, but only to a
certain extent. Its molecular structure
and density mean that it separates out
again when it settles.
This means that PAO 68 oil doesn’t
form permanent bonds, with the
result that the necessary viscosity of
the oils is maintained and changes to
their overall viscosity are excluded. In
view of these characteristics, PAO 68
oil can be used both when topping up
and when changing the system’s entire
oil volume.
“Of course, we also offer PAG oils
in all the usual grades for those
workshops that specifically ask for
them. But one thing’s certain: we’ve
yet to observe any disadvantages when
changing from PAG oils to PAO 68 oil
in practical use. So, the advantages of
making the switch are clearly evident
as far as workshops are concerned,”
says Olaf Henning, Corporate
Executive Vice President and General
Manager MAHLE Aftermarket.
Simplified storage is not the
only benefit of MAHLE’s PAO 68
compressor oil’s nonhygroscopic
nature. When used on its own,
humidity-related problems, such
as the icing up of components or
the formation of acids, can also be
combated.
In comparison with conventional
oils, PAO 68 oil thus offers
considerably improved possible uses,
protects against wear, and ensures the
proper function of the air conditioning
compressor.

Schaeffler postpones REPXPERT Academy
LIVE at Blackpool & The Fylde College
SCHAEFFLER has postponed the
REPXPERT Academy LIVE event
planned for June 20th at Blackpool &
The Fylde College.
“The current restrictions on social
distancing and mass gatherings
mean that we have had to put all
REPXPERT Academy LIVE events
on hold for now, so we are looking
at other ways to help garages get
‘back on track’” explained Schaeffler
Training Manager, Alistair Mason.
“This includes the creation of a
brand new online training platform,
plus the distribution of Schaeffler
‘back on track’ support packs to
help workshops show they are well
prepared and ready to deal with the
backlog of MOT testing and urgent
vehicle repairs that have built up over
the last few weeks.”
The Schaeffler ‘Back on Track’
support pack will contain essential
health and safety items such as social
distancing tape and floor sticker,
mask, gloves, hand sanitiser and
hi-vis vest etc., all designed to help
technicians maintain the 2m social
distancing guidelines in the workshop
and reception.
SAFE AND
(SOUNDLESS)
Schaeffler (UK) Managing Director,
Nigel Morgan, is behind the plan; “We
are really keen to continue engaging
with professional technicians at this
time as, despite the negative impact
the restrictions are having on all
businesses, we know that they will be
looking for ways to stay ahead of the
game for when things start to get back
to normal.
“Schaeffler remains open and able
to deliver parts, and we want to help
garages to also get ‘back on track’,
working safely to provide essential
repairs and maintenance for key
worker vehicles.”
Schaeffler continues to provide
updates via both the automotive trade
media and on REPXPERT, Schaeffler’s
workshop portal.
FAG wheel bearings are approved for OE fitment
and engineered for a smooth and silent drive.
We also deliver wheel bearings to mechanics
wanting genuine quality and reliability to
protect their customers and their reputation.
Fitting bearings that have not been designed,
engineered, tested and approved to VM
specifications and quality standards is a risky
business, so for safety’s sake fit FAG.
The Parts Alliance encourages battery
testing during lockdown and beyond
THE Parts Alliance is encouraging
garages to proactively offer
a battery testing service to their
customers and have produced
a range of marketing materials
to help.
Vehicles across the country have
been standing idle since the lockdown
began in late March. One consequence
of low vehicle use is the decline in the
condition of batteries.
The continual drain from in-vehicle
electrical systems and alarms, along
with natural loss in charge could result
in significant numbers of batteries
requiring recharging or replacement in
the coming months.
“Field research in 2017 conducted by
Yuasa, one of the world’s leading manufacturers
of batteries, showed that in 1
of 10 vehicles in the UK had a battery
that needed replacing ,” said Simon
Moore, Head of Marketing at The Parts
Alliance. “As many as 1 in 4 batteries
needed recharging.
“It’s anticipated that the percentage
of batteries requiring replacement or
recharging is likely to be considerably
higher following the lockdown so we
encourage garages to test as many batteries
as possible.”
The Parts Alliance has developed a
suite of marketing materials for garages
looking to promote testing. These
include posters, a test form and digital
marketing resources too.
Garages that embrace battery testing
could increase their sales significantly.
“Yuasa estimated a typical garage that
sees 100 vehicles a month could earn
£15,000 per year from new batteries
and charging pre-coronavirus,” said
Simon. “Since lockdown the potential
to increase revenue testing is likely to
be much higher.”
This period of short, infrequent journeys
can cause a battery to fail more
rapidly. The Parts Alliance reminds
garages that problems due to vehicle
inactivity are not covered by warranty
as they’re not due to ‘manufacturing
defect’.
Garages keen to develop their knowledge
of batteries are encouraged to
enrol on the GS Yuasa Academy at
https://academy.gs-yuasa.eu/. Free
of charge training resources include
over 20 detailed training courses to
complete at any pace. All courses are
accredited by the CPD Certification
Service.
FEATURE Rotating Electrics 24
ROTATING
ELECTRICS
It is commonly known that parts professionals
categorise starters and alternators as “rotating electrics.”
Alternatively, mechanics refer to them as part of the
starting charging system.
THE last decade has seen a major
evolution in the design of starting
and generating systems to more
computer controlled systems and
so, its always a good idea to gain
a better understanding of the so-called
“basics” of each operating system and so
avoiding any potential warranty situations
arising.
For almost half a century, the starter
motor was triggered by turning a key
in a spring-loaded ignition switch that
cranked the engine by activating the starter
solenoid. More recent designs reduced
the electrical load on the ignition switch
by inserting a starter relay between the
ignition switch and the solenoid. Later
models which incorporate a starter button,
directly issues an instruction to the
Powertrain Control Module (PCP) to engage
and release the starter motor as required
Starter motors have evolved from
weighty full-field products to the much
lighter permanent magnet, reduction gear
designs. The main problem with the fullfield
starters was, they often failed due to
excessive brush and armature wear. Most
permanent magnate starters fail because
the electrical contacts in the solenoid
wear out.
Why do alternators fail?
DENSO’s expert reveals all
DENSO first introduced
its automotive alternators
back in the 1960s and,
since then, it has pioneered
a variety of new alternator
designs, which are capable
of producing more electrical
power, more efficiently –
but in a smaller and lighter
unit – therefore, its technical
expert is perfectly-placed to
reveal what causes repeated
alternator failures.
Alternators can fail for
many reasons. The symptoms
vary from a faulty battery
warning light to intermittent
charging or no charging
at all. In troubleshooting, it
is essential to start identifying
the symptoms first in
order to narrow the possible
causes. A visual inspection
of the system and its components
will also help.
DENSO Assistant Manager,
Aftermarket Network
UK and Ireland, Mike Sadler,
said: “One of the common
causes for alternator
failure is a bad diode, burnt
out due to an open circuit or
high resistance between the
alternator output (B+) and
the positive (+) battery connections.
In these circumstances,
charging current
will flow through the diodes
from an alternative route towards
the battery.
“This alternative route will
cause excessive flow through
the diode, resulting in the
alternator overheating and,
ultimately, failing.”
Should this issue arise,
DENSO’s best practice advice
is for technicians to perform
a thorough inspection
and conduct voltage drop
tests to isolate any problems
and avoid alternator failures
in the future.
Mike continued: “A similar
effect may occur when the alternator
is forced to charge a
discharged battery or when
the battery can be charged
but can’t be set-up to normal
resistance.
“In such cases, the alternator
will be instructed to
charge the battery to the
maximum rate and be overloaded
for prolonged periods
of time, which will cause
the alternator to overheat.
As a result, the diodes, as

25 FEATURE Rotating Electrics
well as the stator windings
and connections inside the
unit, can become damaged
and fail.”
Once referring to DENSO’s
best practice procedures,
technicians should check
the battery and replace if
necessary.
Mike concluded: “Overheating
can also occur if the
alternator is positioned in
a space with poor airflow,
especially when the component
is working under full
load at slow speed and in
conditions where cooling is
insufficient. This may result
in an early alternator failure.”
THE DENSO DIFFERENCE
As mentioned, DENSO
launched its first alternator
back in the 60s and hasn’t
looked back; for example,
in 2000, it introduced the
world’s first segment conductor
(SC) alternator using
a rectangular conductor for
its stator coil.
By raising the winding
density from 45% to 70%,
DENSO was able to make
the SC alternator 20% lighter
and achieve 50% more
output than a conventional
type.
To illustrate its prowess
and quality of its SC alternator,
DENSO conducted a
product comparison, testing
the DENSO SC alternator
against an unnamed
competitor, which will be
referred to as Brand X. The
Brand X alternator is sold
in the aftermarket as an alternative
to the DENSO SC
alternator.
Three tests were carried
out to scrutinise performance,
durability and welding
composition – against
the same DENSO Design
Standards (DDS), all of
which DENSO’s original
equipment quality aftermarket
alternators adhere to –
but the Brand X alternator
failed all three.
In terms of performance
analysis, the alternator is
hot stabilised at 5,000rpm
for 30 minutes, then a speed
sweep is carried out, from
1,000rpm to 10,000rpm
in 60 seconds, at 25°C and
90°C ambient temperatures.
Rpm values are related to
alternator revs, of which
1,800rpm represents approximate
engine idle speed
and 5,000rpm represents
approximate normal engine
driving speed.
To pass this test, the component
must meet or exceed
DDS for output amps in
each of the four highlighted
scenarios, and in each of
them, Brand X’s output fell
below DDS; whereas, DEN-
SO’s alternator exceeded
the performance criteria.
As well as failing the output
test, Brand X’s alternator rotor
resin melted – a common
cause of premature failure.
To assess durability, DEN-
SO applies ‘up and down’
analysis, which involves acceleration
and deceleration
between 0-22,500rpm. The
alternator is tested at 90°C
in 20-second cycles, with
one second for acceleration,
nine seconds at 22,500rpm,
one second for deceleration
and nine seconds at 0rpm.
After 45,000 cycles, the
alternator should be ‘electrically
operating’ with a maximum
of 10% reduction in
output. There should be no
mechanical damage, such as
detaching or cracking of the
fan welding; however, Brand
X’s alternator ‘electrically
failed’ after just 1,227 cycles
due to rotor coil wire breakage.
The test, therefore, could
not be completed. After the
component was disassembled,
interference between
the rotor O/D and stator I/D
was noted, which was due to
rotor claw pole deformation
and a crack in the field coil
fusing point resin.
continued on page 26 >

FEATURE Rotating Electrics 26
> continued from page 25
As a result, Brand X’s alternator
did not meet DDS.
The faults discovered illustrated
that the unit tested
had a short lifetime, the
equivalent to approximately
six months of service. In
contrast, DENSO SC alternators,
typically, show no
signs of failure until around
90,000 cycles, the equivalent
to more than 15 years
in service.
Brand X’s alternator was
also tested to analyse the
chemical composition of the
welding alloy using scanning
electron microscopy (SEM)
and an energy dispersive
x-ray analyser (EDX). SEM
provides detailed high-resolution
images, and EDX is
used to identify the elements
that make up the sample.
The welding should be
lead-free in order to comply,
not only with DDS, but also
with European legislation,
as lead is a harmful material.
The examination discovered
lead and tin present
within the welding alloy of
Brand X’s alternator. European
legislation bans these
heavy metals from use in
parts, such as alternators,
due to their poor mechanical
strength and low melting
points, which pose a fire
hazard.
Previously, nearly all welds
contained lead, but safety
concerns have increasingly
dictated the use of lead-free
alloys. In addition, the use
of soldering to join the stator
phase and rectifier terminal,
as well as the regulator
frame, reinforces the
poor quality of Brand X’s
alternator.
In contrast, DENSO uses
tungsten inert gas welding
for the SC alternator stator
phase and spot welding for
the regulator frame, always
with lead-free alloys.
Parts manufacturer, WAIglobal
UK, has strengthened its range
of ever-growing rotating
electrics by introducing five new
starter motors.
The new starter motors cover a range
of makes and models, with part
number 33236-OS covering Ford C
Max, Focus, Galaxy, Kuga, Mondeo
and S-MAX 2.0 TDCi (2014>); 30846-
OS being applicable with Volvo S60,
S80, V40 and V40 2.5T (2010 – 2017);
30844-OS offering coverage across
Vauxhall Adam, Astra, Corsa and Viva
1.0 (2014>); 16424-OS covering BMW
1, 3, 5, 6, 7 Series and X3 2.0 (2015>);
and finally, part number 30584-OS,
which is suitable for BMW 1 and 3
Series 1.6 (2012-2017).
The new to range products
are listed alongside all-inclusive
cross referencing, and each
product is marked with WAI’s
traffic light ordering system where
green identifies as fast-moving
and therefore distributors are
recommended to stock the product.
If the product is marked Amber
however, WAI recommends stocking
it in a central warehouse, and if
marked red suppliers will have the
part in stock should the distributor
require next-day delivery.
WAIglobal has one of the leading
ranges of rotating electrics available
in the exchange with over 5,000 part
numbers in total.
A complete technical support
service that delivers full guidance
on fitting procedures and in-service
issues is available as standard when
ordering each part.

Advice for
staying in
business during
the coronavirus
pandemic
Peter Dobson, Managing Director at PMD
THE coronavirus has hit the
business sector hard, with
most businesses feeling
adverse effects to varying
degrees. Some garages have
stayed open but with lockdown and
fears around contracting the virus,
garages have struggled to produce
decent levels of income. This has been
compounded by the government’s
decision to extend MOTs for six
months from 30th March 2020. There
are various cost saving measures open
to you that your accountant should be
able to talk you through, including:
VAT and tax deferrals, staff furlough
scheme and payment holidays for
bank and finance agreements.
CBILS or BBILS
which one is right for you?
If the business still needs extra cash
to function, then you may be entitled
to either the Coronavirus Business
Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS)
or the Bounce Back Loan Scheme
(BBLS). If you only need up to
£50,000 then BBLS is a much easier
route. The loan can be up to £50,000
or 25% of turnover, whichever is
lower. It is quick to arrange, with
most banks having website portals
for this. Rates are inexpensive at
2.5% p.a. and there are no capital or
interest repayments in the first 12
months.
If you need more than £50,000,
then a CBILS loan is for you. There
is more paperwork to complete and
you must evidence that your business
was viable before COVID-19 and looks
likely to continue in the same vein
beyond the crisis. Some businesses
have already made the mistake of
assuming they can apply for both, but
this is not the case.
continued on page 28 >

FOCUS Finance 28
> continued from page 27
CBILS loans are available through
brokers as well as high street banks
and generally service levels are much
better through NACFB accredited
brokers. There are no capital or
interest repayments in the first 12
months and rates are competitive.
They do, however, vary from lender
to lender. Initially the banks struggled
to cope with the demand but BBLS
has eased the pressure and lenders
are now getting through more CBILS
applications.
Please be aware that CBILS and
BBLS are loans. They are not grants
and must be repaid at some point.
The lenders have a government
guarantee, not the client, and your
business is fully liable for the full loan
amount and interest.
Use your BBLS
money wisely
We have seen some garages use
BBLS money to repay existing finance
agreements. This is not a wise move
as they may only get a marginal
discount on their existing finance
agreement, which means they will be
paying double interest. It is perhaps
better to apply for payment holidays
on the existing agreement(s) and
keep the BBLS, should they have
any issues with cash flow at a later
point. If they can manage without
using the BBLS money then this
can be repaid within the first
12months, without penalty.
We have also seen some clients
use BBLS money to purchase
new equipment, for example MOT
equipment. This might not be the
most prudent way to use BBLS
money. The scheme was intended
to bail out SMEs who were short
of cash to ensure survival. More
traditional funding methods like
leasing and hire purchase may
still be the best option. Businesses
always need cash, so keeping
the BBLS money in the bank
safeguards your business for the
future should there be problems
ahead, as you can only have the
BBLS money once. The biggest
cause of insolvency is cash flow, not
profitability.
The extension to the MOT
deadline has not helped garages
but eventually the government will
cancel the extension, which should
produce a spike in business.
With the economic situation
deteriorating many people will
decide not to buy or replace
vehicles and this should bolster
work for garages over the coming
year. Finance packages are still
very much available for MOT
installations and all other garage
equipment, with little or no deposit
required. MOT installations can be
justified on the basis that around
four MOTs per week should cover
the finance cost and all MOTs after
that are profit.
PMD is a specialist garage
equipment broker working in the
sector and can assist clients with
information and support should
they be looking at CBILS, BBLS or
new equipment facilities.

NEWS
Schaeffler to distribute 2,000 FREE
workshop essentials packs to help garages
get ‘back on track’
IT looks like a light has appeared
at the end of the tunnel, as some
of the lockdown restrictions
begin to be eased. The latest
government advice is that those
who are able to work, but not from
home, should now return to work.
They are also advising commuters
that it is their civic duty NOT to use
public transport, and cycle, walk or
use the car instead. As the average
UK commute is almost an hour, lots
of people will start to use their cars
again.
This means that getting garages
back open, and vehicle technicians
working again, is crucial to helping
the country get back on its feet,
as there will be a backlog of MOT,
servicing and urgent repairs to catch
up on. However, all this work must be
done safely and professionally.
To help garages get back on track,
and make vehicle owners feel safe
when they visit, Schaeffler has created
an essentials pack that will help
workshops get up and running again:
it includes a floor sticker and tape to
mark out the reception and workshop
area into two metre blocks to help
maintain current social distancing
rules. There is some personal PPE; a
washable mask, hand sanitiser and
hi-vis vest, along with some prominent
A2 posters and some mirror hanging
air fresheners to remind both staff
and customers about the guidelines.
The pack and posters are visible
tools to make vehicle owners feel safe,
the hard work
will be in getting
them to book
their cars in. A
key message here
is that the 6-month
MOT delay does NOT
mean that the car is
roadworthy. Garage
owners and technicians
have a duty of care to make
sure that all vehicles leaving
the workshop are in a legal,
safe and roadworthy condition.
Drivers could get fined with nonfunctioning
lights and wipers, or if
tyres don’t meet legal requirements. If
a vehicle isn’t roadworthy, the driver
also may find that their insurance is
invalid if they have an accident.
Workshops could promote free
visual safety checks with any repair,
using every available channel to reach
current and potential customers.
Emails, text and social media are
sure-fire ways to maximise reach
while lots of people are still at home.
Alternatively, placing an old fashioned
ad in the local paper saying that your
workshop is safe and open for work
again can only help.
It is also a good time to advertise
health-related added value servicing –
such as fitting HEPA cabin filters and
disinfecting air-conditioning systems.
Off the back of the free visual check,
garages can also offer ‘enhanced’
safety checks for a small charge -
including fluid top-ups, a battery
condition check, plus a visual check
of all drive belts and the steering &
suspension system.
It is vital that all garage staff are
invested in following the current
guidelines; Minimise contact with
customers and suppliers / use new
disposable gloves, seat covers and
mats for every job / wipe down all
contact points as you go / try and
keep access to each car to just one
technician / turn off all climate control
systems / respect high risk customers
by setting up a no-contact drop-off
and collection system.
All these actions will help customers
see the care and attention workshops
are taking in providing the best safe
and professional service possible.
The Schaeffler REPXPERT team will
also be getting back to work in June,
distributing the ‘BACK ON TRACK’
workshop essentials and poster packs
to selected garages, whilst abiding by
all social distancing rules of course.
REPXPERT members will receive
an email with a pack request link, or
they can visit the news page at www.
from there.

EDT AUTOMOTIVE EMERGES FROM APRIL
TROUBLES FOR OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD
MULTI-AWARD
winning engine
decontamination
specialist
EDT Automotive
has battled through its
toughest ever month as the
effects of the coronavirus hit
home hard.
Trouble flared when their
invoice factoring provider
blocked access to funds without
notice.
“We were trading at only
around 30% of our agreed
facility,” said EDT founder
and Managing Director David
Holmes. “Yet we suddenly
couldn’t access our own
funds.
“We had a five figure amount
showing on their own system
as available but they wouldn’t
release the money, leaving us
with zero income.”
EDT had already responded
to COVID-19 by placing
staff on furlough and taking
directors’ salary reductions.
This has enabled them to
meet lower levels of demand
for garage support with a
skeleton operation.Despite
being a loyal customer for
six years of successful trading,
EDT Automotive was expected
to argue the case for
why they needed their own
money. This ‘cash crunch’
quickly made a difficult situation
perilous.
“April descended into flat
out business administration,”
said David. “We had to
find a new invoice factoring
company, negotiate payment
holidays with several of our
asset finance providers and
seek a CBILS loan.”
The Coronavirus Business
Interruption Loan Scheme
(CBILS) approved EDT’s
borrowing within 10 days
thanks to the strength of the
underlying business but the
application process itself
proved very complex.
“We had to try and explain
not only our operating model
and sector dynamics but
also the long term impact of
this pandemic,” said David.
“These are questions no one
knows the answer to!”
David urges all aftermarket
business to ‘keep fighting’ to
access the support that’s out
there and believes our sector
is relatively fortunate in being
poised to bounce back.
EDT received orders in
March that are now being delivered
and there’s a gradual
uptick in enquiries too. At
garage level, there’s strong
latent demand ahead from
deferred MOTs and delayed
maintenance work.
“The enforced break in
trading has actually allowed
many garage owners to take
stock,” said David. “Coming
out of this, there’s going to
be an older profile of UK cars
needing servicing, MOTs and
more repairs.”
David believes those garage
owners who used to say
they were ‘too busy’ to offer
engine decarbonising will become
fewer.
“We’re looking forward to
working within what will be
a keener and more proactive
sector,” said David. “We suspect
garages will not be taking
anything for granted and
will not want to miss out on
any market opportunities.”

headlights come on, when the driver
is within six metres, the interior lights
turn on and finally, at two metres, the
car unlocks, side mirrors unfold and
the seat adjusts to the driver’s preset
measurements.
However, for complete peace of mind,
the engine can only be started when the
smartphone is inside the car, it relocks
the doors when the driver is two metres
away and users can still unlock their
vehicle even if their phone battery is
flat.
Moreover, for even greater security,
the precise UWB connection ensures
complete protection against relay attacks,
meaning hackers cannot steal
the digital key.
Naturally, drivers share their cars
with others and for this, HELLA has
created the ability for users to give their
key to other smartphones, by simply
swiping it across.
Ultimately, HELLA’s Smart Car Access
technology is the future of vehicle
access, providing comfort, security and
safety to drivers.
Expanded Pro-Align product range offers workshops
further cost savings and efficiency gains
Workshops, bodyshops and tyre
retailers looking to cut their operating
costs and reduce vehicle repair times
can now call upon two new systems that
have been added to an expanded range
of workshop equipment from leading
supplier Pro-Align.
The Teknel Butterfly and Teknel
Dragon 300 are two powerful induction
heaters that allow technicians to heat
ferrous materials and aluminium in
a matter of seconds. The incredible
performance of the systems means that
a host of regular workshop operations
such as unlocking joints and bolts,
removing sealants and paints, and
the straightening of rigid axles, can be
carried out quicker and easier than ever
before. What’s more, in addition to the
speed and efficiency gains, workshops
using the induction heaters can typically
save more than 50% of the cost of using
gaseous based heating equipment.
“In the current climate, it’s critical
that workshops can operate as
efficiently as possible and minimise
their ongoing running costs,” comments
Clive Seabrook, CEO, Pro-Align.
“Our Hunter alignment systems
have long been recognised for these
characteristics, but we wanted to offer
even more support and assistance to
workshops. The addition of the Teknel
induction heaters is the first step on
this journey and one which we are sure
will help workshops overcome their
profitability and efficiency challenges.”
Thanks to the absence of flames and
the fingertip accuracy of the heating
wand, the Teknel induction heaters can
be used near pipes and cables without
the risk of damage normally associated
with gas-based systems.
Both induction heaters are capable
of heating required areas up to a
maximum of 800 degrees Celsius. The
Butterfly has a maximum power of
3.5Kw and the Dragon 3.9Kw, which are
both selectable on 10 different output
levels.
The Butterfly is the smallest, highpower
induction heater with a liquid
cooling system ever. It provides more
than 30 minutes of continuous working
time and with a weight of just 7kg,
makes it an extremely portable and
convenient unit.
Meanwhile the Dragon 300 induction
heater can bring a red-hot temperature
of 800 degrees Celsius to a material
depth of 5mm in just eight seconds.
“The induction heater range
expansion is just the start of a
number of exciting initiatives we will
be launching over the coming weeks,”
adds Seabrook. “From new products,
to new ways of doing business, we’re
committed to supporting our industry
partners through the challenging times
ahead so that we can all continue
to prosper regardless of the wider
economic conditions.”

Autogem appoint Adam Livett
as business development manager
AUTOGEM is promising to
provide even more solutions
for its customers after
appointing a new specialist
business development
manager to complement its range of
industry leading aftermarket products.
Adam Livett will bring 23 years of
main vehicle dealer experience to the
new role and is already pledging to
‘fulfil customers’ needs and look after
them’, rather than simply sell them
products alone.
Adam already had favourable first
impressions of Autogem after selling the
brand’s consumables solutions when in
a similar role at Vauxhall.
The 42-year-old, who has also worked
as a parts manager for Toyota, said:
“I have always been struck Autogem’s
overarching portfolio of products. So
many of them save time and improve
engagement. And also importantly, they
Bridgestone North Region appoint
Vice President
BRIDGESTONE, the world’s
largest tyre and rubber manufacturer,
has appointed Andrea
Manenti as Vice President
for its North Region,
encompassing the UK and
Ireland.
Andrea joins Bridgestone
from Trelleborg Wheel Systems
where he was Global
OE Senior Director. He joined
Trelleborg in Italy as Sales Director
and has held Managing
Director and Country Manager
positions in the UK and
Ireland, China and Asia.
The appointment arrives after
Bridgestone restructured
its consumer and commercial
sectors, with Brett Emerson
assuming the Consumer
Business Unit Director role
assist in increasing revenue streams on
the forecourt.
“I have a number of years’ experience
on the main dealer side of the industry
and I do believe that the insight I have
will help me as I begin work here.
There are so many opportunities for
Autogem to maximise and I am already
putting plans in place to make sure that
we do, by speaking to the right people
and building strong relationships from
there.”
Autogem’s Managing Director
Prashant Chopra said: “We are
delighted to have Adam on board. He
brings a wealth of experience to the
role and his enthusiasm and pro-active
attitude shone through when we first
spoke many years ago.
“Adam’s main dealer experience will
be invaluable and we look forward
to generating more interest in our
products as a result, which will help
and Greg Ward fulfilling the
same position for the commercial
side of the business.
Andrea said: “To work for
the world’s largest tyre and
rubber company is an honour
and in this fast-changing environment
I look forward to getting
to work with a fantastic
team on many strategic and
exciting initiatives.
“Bridgestone is moving towards
a position of being a
mobility solutions leader and
the work being doing here excites
me enormously, as seen
in the recent acquisition of
Webfleet Solutions.
“But in the shorter term,
there are some big projects to
bring to fruition too. We will
continue to work to re-engage
our customers and drive our
performance with our impressive
portfolio of products
and services. Opening new
routes to market will also be
an area of focus, anticipate
trends and find innovative
ways to serve our customers
remain paramount.
provide them with greater opportunities
to engage with their end-users and also
create extra demand themselves.
Andrea also touched upon
the unprecedented challenges
posed by the COVID-19 outbreak
and remained confident
about the future.
“We live in uncertain, times
which are history defining in
many ways. From both a personal
and professional perspective,
we will have to remain
strong and will need to
do so for some time to come,
however I’m confident that
our proactive approach, team
work philosophy and focus
on customers make us robust
enough to deal with whatever
challenges lie ahead.
“We are only as strong as
the people who represent us,
and I already know that the
team at Bridgestone is one of
the very best in the industry.
It is this team and the desire
to better serve our customers
which will drive us forward.”
