Eyes to the sky for duck shooting
Hunters wereout in huge
numbers, as weretheir
feathered targets, at the
opening of the duck shooting
season on Saturday.
NorthCanterbury turned
on pretty good weather, with
established pondsproviding
some goodhunting, with bags
of around 30 to 70 birds per
pond being reported.
The threeweekdelaytothe
season due to theCovid19
lockdown failed to dampen
the enthusiasm of hunters,
with all of them just grateful
to finally be out theredoing it.
Hunters reported the best
numbers of birdsseen
frequenting ponds in many
years.
NorthCanterbury Fish and
Game rangers coveredawide
area to check for compliance,
whichthey found was high
across the region.
Hunters said the
Government’s decision to
delaythe startofthe game
bird seasonuntil after New
Zealand movedinto alert
level2,enabled the cultural
fabric of what is opening day
to be maintained.
Hunters were positive
aboutbeing able to enjoya
game bird season and grateful
to be able to get out hunting.
Fish &Game New Zealand
chiefexecutive MartinTaylor
said the weekend was an
important opportunity for
thousands of New Zealand
families to harvestsome
organic freerangefood for
the table.
‘‘In these economic times,
being able to provide good
wholesome wildfood may
takethe pressureoff some
families in the months
ahead,’’ he says.
New Zealand has many
places for hunters to gather
gamebirds, and many regions
benefit from the resultant
‘‘Duck Tourism’’.
Gamebird seasons vary in
lengthacross the country, so
hunters can travel to a
different region to increase
hunting opportunitiesand
support the regional
economy.
No agreement over Amberley tyre mountain
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Aplan to get rid of atyre mountain near
Amberley has hit aspeed bump.
The landownerisnot buying into aplan
by AccountabilityAction (AA) to shred
and ship the tyresoff the property.
AA members Julia McLean andBruce
Gledhill outlined their plan to the
Hurunui District Council last week. The
council agreedtohold funds if its
application to the Waste Minimisation
Fund was successful.
Richard Smith, the lawyer for the
RacecourseRoad landowner, says AA’s
business plan is the most ‘‘amateurish,
unsophisticated, and contradictory’’ he
has ever seen.
Hesaysuntil aviableformal business
plan is received by the landownerhe
cannotconsider endorsing an application
by AA to the Waste Minimisation Fund. A
plan has not been received.
Mr Smithsays the landownerdoesn’t
rule out working with AA, but it must be
collaborative rather than the ‘‘adversarial
approach’’ that had prevailed.
Meanwhile, adetermination as to who
owns the tyresisbefore the court, Mr
Smith says.
Until this was determined no progress
could be made by any party.
Mr Smith saysthe landowner alsohas
concerns over the shredder to be used to
processthe tyres before packing them
intocontainers to be shipped north to
Golden Bay Cement to fuel afurnace.
Mr Smith saysheand the landowner
are working with Environment
Canterbury to find away forward in both
legal and practical terms, including its
own application to the wastefund.
‘‘That application was drafted
collaboratively between the applying
party and the landowner,’’ Mr Smith said.
