HAWKINS
Building the Bay of Plenty
ONE OF NEW
ZEALAND’S
LEADING
construction
companies is making
its mark in Tauranga
and Rotorua.
Noticed the number of quality new
buildings that have gone up in the Bay
of Plenty recently?
Whether it’s Zespri’s head office in
Mount Maunganui, the Tauranga
Crossing shopping centre at Tauriko,
the University of Waikato’s campus in
Tauranga’s CBD, or the new Farmers
development in downtown Tauranga,
they all have one thing in common. They
have all been built by the local Hawkins
team.
Hawkins built Stage 1 of Tauranga
Crossing, which opened in September
2016. On the basis of this work, Hawkins
was also appointed to deliver Stage 2,
which opened in April 2019. “Our client
is extremely happy with the quality of
work we delivered,” said Hawkins GM
Central Peter McCawe. “There were
1200 people working on the site in the
lead-up to opening day. They pulled
out all the stops so that it looked fantastic
when the first shoppers walked through
the doors.”
And anyone who had been to the
University of Waikato’s new Tauranga
campus would tell you it was an
awesome building with a very highquality
finish, said McCawe.
“It brings new learning opportunities
into the heart of Tauranga, which is
something we’re proud to be a part of.
Based on the quality of our work, the
University then asked Hawkins to do the
specialised fit-out of the laboratories
within the building as well.”
Just down the road in Mount Manganui,
there’s a new office building that stands
out from the crowd. Zespri’s head office
is distinctive because it has the green
leaves of a kiwifruit vine woven into its
design.
“The Zespri project required building an
office in two stages, right next door to
the client’s existing office,” said McCawe.
“Once the first stage was complete, the
client moved in and we demolished the
old building to make way for the second
stage.”
As well as delivering a great building, the
project team went above and beyond to
divert construction waste from landfill.
“The project team, client and
subcontractors were all on board and
keen to see what we could do,” he said.
As well as having multiple bins on site
to separate waste, the team came up
with the idea of a Recycling Kiosk, where
the public could access good, useable
building materials that might otherwise
go to landfill.
