BY LUCY HILL, Trustpower 2019 Apollo Graduate LIFE ON THE INSIDE OF TRUSTPOWER The Apollo intern and graduate experience TRUSTPOWER IS IN ITS SECOND year of running the Apollo Programme, which takes on seven people each year for two years of learning and experiencing life at Trustpower. People of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, whether they are fresh out of university, already employed at Trustpower, or looking for a career change. The Apollo programme rotates participants through different areas in the business, to learn a variety of skills and gain industry and business knowledge. Throughout the programme, each participant is encouraged to give feedback on business operations, team dynamics and experience from the perspective of a fresh set of eyes. Each participant is assigned a manager and buddy for each team they rotate through, alongside a mentor for the duration of the programme. Participants are permanent employees of Trustpower. At the conclusion of their 2 year programme, Apollo participants will go on to work in or develop a role that best matches their career goals and interests within business life at Trustpower. Flexible workplace environment Trustpower’s working style is very different to most. The Tauranga headquarters in the CBD was built to facilitate activity-based working (aka innovation, communication and connectivity). The company has areas specifically designed for all kinds of work, be it highly focused, private conference calls, scheduled and spontaneous meetings. Name the kind of space needed and it probably exists. The flexibility continues into the workload and work time. Workload is overseen by managers to ensure work-life balance is just right. And if you forgot to feed the cat it’s all good, you can go and work from home and make sure Roger is doing okay. Helpful colleagues It would be unusual to walk past someone in the building and not smile or say hello (there are about 700 people here), and if you needed help from one of those 700 people, they will help you often more than you thought possible. There is a huge variety of specialists and talents at Trustpower, so help with your work or for your personal life is very easy to come by. Opportunities for personal growth Trustpower has shown the Apollo interns they value personal growth and encourage staff to seek training and new roles if they’re of interest to them. Training workshops are hosted on site for staff, teaching things of interest such as Te Reo Maori, how to work in an Agile APOLLO PROGRAMME: ENCOURAGING YOUNG PEOPLE. PHOTO/TRUSTPOWER. way, and even yoga. Staff members organise influential guest speakers such as Jason Gunn, Dr Tom Mulholland and Judith Collins for the business to listen to and ask questions. Weeks of the year are dedicated to special causes such as mental health, and Recycling Week where staff groups organise activities, permanent changes to the office and the way Trustpower works to improve the workspace. Living a healthy life is also supported through free sports team sponsorships to staff, gym and pool memberships, free fruit Mondays, discounted medical insurance, onsite reflexology and massage services and many, many more. Our Apollo interns report: “We think it’s pretty awesome, if you get the chance, give it a go.” 0800 36 98 45 WWW.TRUSTPOWER.CO.NZ YEAR BOOK 2020 | 41
