BACKYARD CRITTERS
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in
entomology (insects and other invertebrates).
Native cockroaches
not a household pest
COCKROACHES are one insect
group that most people detest.
Their flattened, oval shape, spiny
legs and scuttling nature is quite
distinctive.
The main exotic species which
are pests in New Zealand houses
are the American cockroach
Periplaneta americana, the
German cockroach Blatella
germanica, and the Australiannative
Gisborne cockroach
Drymaplaneta semivitta.
Many of the native cockroach
species in New Zealand do not
pose any health risks.
At least 20 species of native
cockroaches are known in New
Zealand, most of which are in
the genus Celatoblatta.
These natives are not
household pests, but rather are
found in damp, dark habitats
under wood or leaf litter.
They are
omnivorous,
feeding on organic
material which
can include dead
wood, which is
digested with the
help of symbiotic
gut flora.
Female
cockroaches carry
eggs in a cluster
called ootheca
at the rear and
deposit them
under cover to
develop.
Ransley gets ace ring-in
for eSport Cup finale
• By Jacob Page
PREBBLETON’S Jaden Ransley
will have a V8 Supercars driver
on his side as he pursues the
eSports Cup virtual motorsport
title tomorrow night.
The 18-year-old sits second in
the points standings heading into
the two-hour endurance race finale
at the famed Bathurst track.
With each competitor needing
a co-driver, Ransley has called in
Kiwi V8 Supercars driver Andre
Heimgartner to help him in his
championship push.
Ransley was able to maintain
his spot in the standings in round
nine thanks to two fourth place
finishes in each race at Imola,
Italy.
“We probably didn’t have the
speed to win both races but we
stayed clean and got good points.
“I was really happy with how
everything turned out.”
Ransley will try to chase down
MOMENTUM: Jaden Ransley (left) will team up Kiwi V8
driver Andre Heimgartner for the final round of the eSport
Cup tomorrow night.
SPORT
competition leader, Australian,
Harley Haber to take the crown.
Haber has a 30-point advantage
on him.
The Bathurst enduro race will
see the 40 regular competitors
in the series chose their own codrivers
for the event, with double
points on offer that will ultimately
determine the champion.
Using iRacing software, two
drivers will share one car, regardless
if they are sharing the same
simulator.
Ransley said Heimgartner’s experience
would prove invaluable.
“This is a case of Kiwis helping
out Kiwis and I know I’ll lean
on Andre’s experience when it
comes to tactics and pit-stops.’’
Ransley said he was confident
in his ability at a familiar track
to overhaul Haber of things went
his way.
