Bid to make children
care for the environment
Mrs Burney said they
have begun going into
several pre-schools and
primary schools.
“Research has shown,
particularly in caring for
the environment, that the
younger the children are
the more likely they are to
become more environmentally
conscious as they get
older.
“So if you can instil this
affinity for nature and taking
care of the environment
then it will stay with them,’’
she said.
The book Tock Saves the
Earth follows the robot as
he decides to travel back in
time to find out what happened
to all the plants and
animals.
“Along the way, the
children learn about little
In his submission,
Weedons Residents
Association chairman
Stephen Bain said he
thinks there should be no
rates increase in the next
financial year.
“Every resident and
business of Selwyn will
have suffered to some level
financially due to Covid-19
already. These same people
and businesses are now
proceeding into unprecedented
and extremely
volatile times, as is the
district council itself.”
Prebbleton resident
James Russell said in his
submission that he is very
strongly in favour of the
option to freeze rates.
“The downturn in
business activity and
household incomes is
stuff they can do to make
the world a better place and
a brighter future for everybody.
We wanted to show it
doesn’t have to be a chore,
it can be fun.”
The couple decided to
release the book online
recently and have been
receiving positive feedback.
“I know how children
can get engaged very easily
through puppets and characters
and things like that.
“It is better for them to
unprecedented, and
Selwyn households cannot
afford additional expenses
in the current economic
environment.
“If this means deferring
some projects, or downscaling
other activities, or
finding cheaper ways of
doing things, then please
do that,’ he said.
THE REVIEW of the
District Plan has been
pushed out until later
this year because of
Covid-19.
The plan was expected
to be publicly notified in
April but that will now not
be happening.
In a report the district
council said: “We are still
working through the implications
of the Covid-19
pandemic to determine
how long this delay may
be but we hope to be able
to notify the Plan later this
year.
“We will update the
public as soon as we have
more information,’’ it
said.
A district council
spokesman said it is unclear
at this stage whether
the delay will have an
get behind the character
and his journey and what
he learns than being bombarded
with information,”
she said.
Through reading the
book, parents can also be
engaged and learn from
Tock, Mrs Burney said.
Some submissions support rates rise
FEEDBACK: A proposal to freeze rates, which
help fund projects such as Rolleston’s new library
and community centre (Te Ara Atea), has received
support from the community.
Not all of the submissions
have been in favour
of maintaining rates at the
current level.
In Malvern community
board chairman John
Morten’s submission he
said the board supports the
option to seek to reduce
the planned 3.5 per cent
increase.
District Plan review delayed
impact on the cost of the
project.
In December, Selwyn
Times reported that the
budget for this financial
year is expected to
be exceeded by about
$400,000 in order to
deliver the proposed
District Plan for
notification in May.
The budget for the
project for the 2019/20
financial year is $805,000.
