Burnham tyre plant plan goes flat

A LARGE-SCALE plant
designed to break down end-oflife
tyres is no longer proceeding
at Burnham.
The district council approved
leasing land at the Pines
Resource Recovery Park, in
Burnham, to allow Eneform Ltd
to construct a
tyre pyrolysis
plant in 2018.

energy-rich oil and gas.
Eneform Ltd chief executive
Andrew Simcock said they will
no longer be going in at the
recovery park.
“We had plans to build the facility
in Christchurch but recent
developments mean it still could
potentially go in somewhere else
in the district,” he said.
District council solid waste
manager Andrew Boyd said he
has recently been in discussions
with a new company, H2 Solutions
Ltd, about its containerised
French pyrolysis technology.
“The appeal of H2 is that it is
European technology, which has
strict environmental standards,
and has been commercialised
for approximately 15 years, with
plants operating in Western
countries as opposed to prototype
machines,” she said.
H2 Solutions Ltd is interested
in leasing the area of the Pines
Resource Recovery Park originally
set aside for the Eneform
Ltd lease.
Mr Boyd said conversations
are centering around processing
farm plastics, local dairy industry
plastic and potentially other
soft plastics from commercial
sources.
H2 Solutions Ltd’s system
would be able to separately
process materials such as
plastics, paper, cardboard,
wood, biosolids, and tyres.
The type of outputs of the
system can be varied according
to demand including gas, oil and
hydrogen.
Mr Boyd said: “With the
ongoing international recycling
situation continuing to look
very fragile, onshore processing
options such as H2 could form
part of the solution.
“This is all at its very early
stages and the council is meeting,
as it does from time to time
with businesses, to learn about
their services. There is no firm
commitment attached,” he said.
Currently, tyres are landfilled,
exported as waste, stockpiled
or used as silage cover in the
agriculture industry.
About a fortnight ago a fire at
the Diggalink yard on Weedons
Rd spread to a large pile of tyres
which was near State Highway 1
in Rolleston.
•A six-week delay is expected
on the first stage of the project
to upgrade the Pines Resource
Recovery Park due to Covid-19.
The first stage includes
relocating and expanding the
recycling and reusables drop-off
area, with a canopy, parking
and operational area. Further
stages of the project will be
built form 2021-2024 and will
include a reuse shop, salvage
materials yard, education centre,
microenterprise units and a
multi-purpose waste hub.

EV CHARGERS PLANNED
Electric vehicle chargers are
set to be installed across the
district. The first sites are
planned at Arthur’s Pass, Castle
Hill, Springfield, Dunsandel,
and Leeston. A district council
spokesman said proposed
locations have been identified but
these are subject to consultation
first with relevant township and
community committees. The
spokesman said the chargers are
expected to be installed by the
end of the year if not earlier.
2000 LIGHTS REPLACED
Work on replacing older street
lights with more efficient LEDs
is progressing well with nearly
2000 lights replaced so far. The
Ellesmere and Malvern zones
have been completed apart
from a few errant lights that are
being addressed. The Selwyn
central zone is the next area to
be finished. The district council
is spending about $3.3 million
on the project to replace 5800
streetlights across the district.
COMEDY EVENT RETURNS
The annual Live in Lincoln
comedy night at the Lincoln Event
Centre will return on Saturday,
October 17. The comedians
will be announced next week,
promoter David Parlane said.
