The move, which was approved by the Canterbury Rugby Football Union Board and endorsed by the sub-unions will help clubs support their members by minimising barriers when participants return to play. The announcement has been welcomed by the Ellesmere Rugby Sub-Union. “Through discussions with clubs in Ellesmere, we are aware some face an uncertain future,” Ellesmere rugby manager, Michael Sheat said. “Access to grants and other funding has become restricted and a number of clubs face player uncertainty due to personal circumstance. “Rugby is an important part of rural communities. We want rugby to be accessible and endorse the decision the CRFU Board has made,” CRFU chief executive Tony Smail said he was eager for the season to begin later this month. The 30-year-old said the time off due to Covid-19 allowed him to heal some niggling injuries, so he was ready to get back to football. “The aging body certainly enjoyed the break. “I picked up a little knee injury late last year while playing for Canterbury so it’s been nice to rest that. “Knees and ankles need a rest at times and sometimes that’s not possible. “I’m not always the most enthusiastic trainer so doing it by myself during the lockdown was tough. “There might be some rust there but I think we are all keen to get on with it.” Round three of the Mainland Premier League is scheduled for Saturday and while the full draw is not yet known, Ede said he had heard all 21 rounds would be played. “From what I’m hearing a full season is likely going into late September so that’s a good thing, plus there’s talk about the English Cup knockout competition too. “If we have to play a few night games midweek then that’s fine because I’m pretty sure we have a good record in those.” Ede, who is in his seventh season with the Stallions, said he is just as motivated as ever. “My speed has always been a big attribute for me and at 30 it still works for me.
