Komen’s largest grant is to the Oregon Breast & Cervical Cancer Program, totaling more than $650,000 for the 2005-2006 fiscal year. These funds enable women with no insurance or who are under-insured to access life-saving screening and diagnostic services.

Education & Grants: Fifteen Years of Community Support $400,822 Awarded in Grants for Education, Survivor and Treatment Support The Affiliate awarded grants totaling more than $400,000 this year to fund a variety of programs and services to improve breast health in Oregon and SW Washington and further our mission to “eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease.” Who do these grants serve? Low-income, Latinas, African Americans, Asians (specifically Chinese, Korean and Pacific Islanders), lesbians, and rural women with limited access to services. Komen Staff Goes on the Road: Rural Transportation Pilot Project Funded $33,078 Gail Brownmiller, Community Program Manager and Toni Mountain, Survivor Program Manager traveled the state in mid-2005 to talk with rural health care providers in our Affiliate service area. They found that some women must travel up to 400 miles round trip to the nearest cancer treatment center. Consider that some patients need weekly or daily treatment and you can see how this distance can be a tremendous financial burden. As a solution, we created a pilot project for transportation grants in Eastern Oregon, Southern Oregon, Douglas County and between Corvallis and the coast. We will continue to expand the program in 2006-07. How do we decide which Grants to fund? All Komen Affiliates are required to conduct a bi-annual Community Profile needs assessment to identify gaps in breast health services and determine where the Komen Affiliate grant funding can be most effective. For the 2005-2006 Affiliate Community Profile, Komen volunteers and staff spent 10 months gathering data about our service area and discovered the following facts: • Oregon and Washington have the highest incidence of breast cancer in the nation. • 28% of women in the region do not receive regular mammograms. • 15 counties are above the state average in either breast cancer incidence or mortality rates. • 57% of survey respondents could not access breast health information effectively. Non-pro�t organizations, tribal entities and government entities are eligible to apply for Komen Community and Rural Transportation Grants. In 2006-2007, we received 39 applications and funded 26 of them. We now have a much better picture of what our service area looks like, who lives there and what their needs are. The Community Profile will aid our strategic planning and will help guide us in how to serve the community. THE SUSAN G.
