15 Years and Going Strong We are proud to share our affiliate growth and success with you, our supporters. Without your belief in our mission these accomplishments would not be possible. Your trust in our organization is demonstrated through your financial contribution and commitment to finding a cure. With your help, the Oregon & SW Washington Affiliate has become one of the largest affiliates in the country. We thank you for your support. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world... As the global leader in the fight against breast cancer, the Komen Foundation understands the complexities of this disease. More importantly, we recognize that unbelievable accomplishments can start with one person and a simple promise just as the Komen Foundation began almost 25 years ago. We are here for those people in our community who hear the words “you have breast cancer” and who may not have access to the services or information they need to begin their difficult journey against this disease. As the trusted resource, we continue the fight through research, education, screening and treatment. As you review our Komen Affiliate Annual Report, be confident that the money you entrust to us is targeted and utilized in the most efficient manner possible. It is the strength of our partnerships that enables Komen to address the many components of this disease. Lolly Champion, Oregon & SW Washington A�liate Co-Founder and breast health educator. Chris Mulder, Oregon & SW Washington A�liate Co- Founder Chris continues to serve on the Issues After Breast Cancer® Conference Planning Committee. She is motivated by the commitment of so many breast cancer survivors, and the health care professionals she works with, as well as the newly-diagnosed patients that she meets almost every day. Remembering Our Roots In 1991, Lolly Champion was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer in Portland, Oregon, when she noticed a client was reading a book by Nancy Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. ...Indeed, it 's the only thing that ever has.–Margret Mead The book’s message inspired Lolly to call the Komen National Headquarters in Dallas, Texas. “When I called I was very naïve. I had no idea what we were getting into or even how a Race for the Cure ® worked. But I just told them, ‘We want a Race here.’” Soon after that call Lolly, Chris Mulder and Raylene Dion, all survivors, visited Komen National Headquarters in Dallas. Each contributed $100 of their own money and signed the charter agreement that began the Oregon & SW Washington Affiliate. Spreading the Word It was then time to start building the first Komen Portland Race for the Cure ® . The women secured a sponsorship from Payless Drug Stores, joined forces with the Junior League of Portland and reached out to community groups. They also had an alliance with Ann Blaker at the American Cancer Society who helped spread the word. These three women were trained and taught breast health classes. Chris Mulder, who has been with Providence Breast Cancer Outreach Program since 1987, volunteered to speak to medical centers, businesses, and church groups within the city as the Komen Education Chair. “We literally knocked on the doors of every community group in the city–Kiwanis, Soroptimists, church groups, and any business groups we could to spread the message about early detection and breast cancer awareness.” In the midst of canvassing the city, Race coordinator Steve Hamilton guessed, “You’ll probably get about 800 people for your Race.” He was in for a surprise. The Affiliate’s first Race had 6,200 participants and raised enough money to fund $3,188 in mammography screening. “Now we look back at that comment and laugh.” The incredible force that the founders contributed to this Affiliate and their vision of educating the public has enabled us to move forward and expand our reach in the community further than we ever dreamed possible.
