During the national 2006 Komen Mission Conference, two survivors representing the local Affiliate of the Komen Foundation joined up with two research fellows to enrich the understanding of the relationship between breast cancer researcher and breast cancer patient. Lisa Domenico, Vice-President of the Board of Directors for the OR & SW Washington Affiliate and five-year survivor, and Toni Mountain, Survivor Program Manager for the OR & SW Washington Affiliate and 28-year survivor, were selected among 15 other survivors to serve as Ko-Mentors. By pairing survivors with research fellows, the Ko-Mentor program gives survivors a better understanding of breast cancer research and provides fellows insight into their vital role of providing information and professional support. During the conference, each duo discusses the patient and survivor perspectives of research and clinical endeavors and team up during oral presentations and a poster session. At the awards luncheon, the survivor helps the fellow don his or her Komen lab coat.
