Race for the Cure®: <strong>15</strong> <strong>Years</strong> & Running<br />

In 2006 the Komen Portl<strong>and</strong> Race for the Cure ® celebrates its <strong>15</strong>th birthday. At our<br />

<strong>Affiliate</strong>’s first Race in 1992, we had 6,000 participants. Every year the Race gains<br />

momentum <strong>and</strong> the number <strong>of</strong> participants have grown to last year’s record <strong>of</strong><br />

45,730.<br />

The <strong>Susan</strong> G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure® series is<br />

the largest series <strong>of</strong> 5K runs/�tness walks in the world <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Oregon</strong> & <strong>SW</strong><br />

<strong>Washington</strong> A�liate’s Race is the largest on the west coast.<br />

Since 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure ® series has grown from one race with 800<br />

participants to a national series <strong>of</strong> more than 110 races with over 1.5 million people<br />

expected to participate in 2006.<br />

Portl<strong>and</strong> Race for the Cure ® is a Success<br />

• In 7 <strong>Years</strong>: We’ve become the largest Race on the West Coast averaging 40,000<br />

participants per year.<br />

• In 8 <strong>Years</strong>: We’ve generated over $2.5 million for breast cancer research<br />

• In 14 <strong>Years</strong>: We’ve had 403,800 Race participants.<br />

• Last year: we had our most financially successful Race ever, raising more than<br />

$2.2 million dollars.<br />

Surviving<br />

2,910 <strong>of</strong> our Race participants were breast cancer survivors.<br />

All in the Family<br />

In 2005, Pondo Kosmas had the largest friends <strong>and</strong> family team with 422 team<br />

members. Pondo’s team “Gina’s Believas” raised over $30,000 setting the record for<br />

largest donations from a friends <strong>and</strong> family team.
