Race for the Cure®: 15 Years & Running
In 2006 the Komen Portland Race for the Cure ® celebrates its 15th birthday. At our
Affiliate’s first Race in 1992, we had 6,000 participants. Every year the Race gains
momentum and the number of participants have grown to last year’s record of
45,730.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure® series is
the largest series of 5K runs/�tness walks in the world and the Oregon & SW
Washington A�liate’s Race is the largest on the west coast.
Since 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure ® series has grown from one race with 800
participants to a national series of more than 110 races with over 1.5 million people
expected to participate in 2006.
Portland Race for the Cure ® is a Success
• In 7 Years: We’ve become the largest Race on the West Coast averaging 40,000
participants per year.
• In 8 Years: We’ve generated over $2.5 million for breast cancer research
• In 14 Years: We’ve had 403,800 Race participants.
• Last year: we had our most financially successful Race ever, raising more than
$2.2 million dollars.
Surviving
2,910 of our Race participants were breast cancer survivors.

All in the Family
In 2005, Pondo Kosmas had the largest friends and family team with 422 team
members. Pondo’s team “Gina’s Believas” raised over $30,000 setting the record for
largest donations from a friends and family team.
