Pupil elated with PM’s
personal response
• From page 1
Jack, along with his classmates,
was tasked with writing a thank
you card to someone who had
helped him during Covid-19.
Ms Ardern’s comfort and leadership
was what came to mind,
something he aspired to emulate
when he grew up as a leader himself.
“I told her ‘thank you for
stopping Covid-19.’ I just wanted
to tell her that she’s doing a great
job,” he said.
He stood up in front of 127 children
and proudly showed off the
letter, which he said he planned to
frame and hang in his room.
His teacher, Hayley Young,
said most of the children chose
parents or grandparents, but Jack
was the only one who thought of
someone outside of his family.
“He’s a bright kid and thinks
outside of the box. He thinks
globally and is interested in
humanitarian issues, the government,
geography and likes to go
that extra mile about issues he
feels passionate about.”
Miss Young said she was not
aware he had actually sent the
card until he came to school with
to Mairehau Primary School pupil Jack Gregory, 9, after he
wrote to her praising her response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ms Ardern’s response.
“We were very impressed, we
all felt very proud of him.”
The purpose of the exercise was
to instil the importance of celebrating
the positives, especially
in the first weeks back at school
following the lockdown.
Said Miss Young: “Before we
can address literacy or numeracy,
we have to give them those basic
concepts of what it is to be a good
person – being thankful is a part
of that.”
Traffic woes continue
• From page 1
“You’ve got to be so careful, it’s
dangerous near the entrances (of
Northlink).”
The recently installed nostopping
restrictions encouraged
even more people to park on Mr
Williams’ side of the street as it removed
additional parking spaces.
They were placed there instead
to improve visibility when
customers and staff were exiting
Northlink.
Langdons Rd resident Ian
Wilkie said he previously complained
to the Papanui-Innes
Community Board which have
worked with the council to provide
a safer solution.
“It’s like taking your life in
your hands to even cross the
road now. If it doesn’t get any
better then we’ll be taking our
concerns to the streets at peak
traffic periods,” he said.
In addition, he wanted pedestrian
lights to be installed
safety hasn’t been
improved.
The city council previously
rejected the idea to put restrictions
where the residents had
originally wanted as it was not
normal practice to place them on
either side of driveways.
They said resource consents for
this development showed onsite
parking “well exceeded” District
Plan requirements, providing
754 spaces – 52 of which were
allocated for staff.
Said city council transport
operations manager Steffan
Thomas: “Changes to on-street
parking included white lines to
guide people away from driveways.
The developer has marked
the road incorrectly and will be
rectifying this.
“Council staff are also due to
monitor traffic levels in the area,
including volume and speed, and
will install traffic lights at Greers
Rd intersection in the event of
expansion.”
