Percentage of households that have lost a job or
closed businesses during the pandemic
n IDB survey, conducted in 17 countries in the region,
shows that many Latin Americans have lost their jobs
or other means of subsistence as a result (Bottan, Hoffmann,
and Vera-Cossio, unpublished). And the situation is
much more serious in the most vulnerable households.
Among those surveyed who before the crisis had incomes
below half the minimum wage (which corresponds, approximately,
to the lowest decile), 59% report that some
member of the household lost their job due to the pandemic
and 43% of those who had businesses report having
closed them. Those who received income of more than six
minimum wages (which corresponds, approximately, to
the upper decile) reported job losses in 15% of households
and business closings in 21% of these.
