Kaiapoi’sSanta Parade could double in size<br />

welcome return to Kaiapoi this<br />

In ayearwhereevents have<br />
beencancelledorpostponed,<br />
the Kaiapoi Christmas Carnival<br />
and SantaParadeare returning<br />
on Saturday,December 5.<br />

‘‘It’s going to be big andwe<br />

Parade having alreadybeen<br />
cancelledbecause of<br />
uncertainty created by Covid<br />
19, Kaiapoi’s annual carnivalis<br />
likely to becomethe main event<br />
ahead of other Santaparades<br />
aroundtheregion.<br />

Mr Cook says he has received<br />
considerable interestfrom<br />
Christchurchbusinesses<br />
looking to enterafloat, forcing<br />
the parade’straffic<br />
management plan to go back to<br />
the drawingboard.<br />
‘‘Wehad alot of interestlast<br />
yearand now we’re getting alot<br />
more interest. Lastyearwehad<br />
60 floats andthis year we could<br />
haveasmany as 120entries.’’<br />

welcomes enquiries from<br />
community groups wantingto<br />

entertainers and buskers along<br />
Williams St andMrCooksays<br />
they will be venturing north of<br />
thebridge this year to engage<br />
morebusinesses north of the<br />
river.<br />
With the likely growth in float<br />
numbers, theparade routeis<br />
being reviewedand other<br />
changesare possible, he says.<br />
‘‘Weare actively looking for<br />
sponsors,soplans are going to<br />
getreviewedand maychange.<br />
‘‘Weare certainlyawareof<br />
theeconomicclimate.’’<br />
Mr Cook saysthe association<br />
is actively stepping up effortsto<br />
promoteKaiapoi to the<br />
Christchurch market,having<br />
signedacontractgivingit<br />
exclusiverights to aKaiapoi<br />
jinglebeingplayed on<br />
Christchurch radio stations.<br />
‘‘AslongasI’ve beenpart of<br />
KPA, it’s always beenthe thing<br />
thatnorthern Christchurchis<br />
ourtarget, butnow we realise<br />
thatpeoplearecomingfromall<br />
overChristchurch, Rolleston<br />
andSelwyn.<br />
‘‘It’s going off at the moment<br />
andIdon’t think that’sjusta<br />
local thing. People are<br />
spending.Most peoplehave<br />
hadsix weeksawayfromwork<br />
on full payand nowhereto<br />
spend themoney.Sothe<br />
opinion is it will slowdown,but<br />
when,we don’t know.’’<br />

local appears to have become<br />
