Century acricketing milestone<br />

Alan Burgess is theworld’soldest<br />

survivingfirst classcricketer.<br />

He is not shouting the factfromthe<br />

rooftops.<br />

Instead,Alanisquietlycelebrating his<br />

100th birthday fromhis third­storey room<br />

at Charles Upham Retirement Village in<br />

Rangiora.<br />

Alan,who has lived in thevillage since<br />

April 2017,has beenbestowedthe honour<br />

of being the‘‘oldestsurviving’’ cricket<br />

player afterthe recent death of Indian<br />

player Vasant Raiji,who was also100.<br />

He played at Lords, known as the home<br />

of cricket, threetimes, againstsuch<br />

players as Len Hutton, an English<br />

openingbatsmanofdistinction.<br />

Alanwas aright­handed batsman and<br />

left­arm bowler. He playedfor<br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> from 1940 to 1952, though the<br />

war intervened, affecting his provincial<br />

cricketingcareer.<br />

He joinedthe armywhen he turned21<br />

in 1941 and servedinEgypt, as did<br />

Charles Upham, VC,afterwhomthe<br />

villageAlan now calls home is named.<br />

He servedinItalyasaShermantank<br />

driverinthe Tank Brigadeofthe 20th<br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong>­Otago Battalion.<br />

Duringthe war, Alan drove atankas<br />

partofthe Italiancampaign andwatched<br />

the huge damage doneduringthe Battle<br />

of MonteCassino, withthe monastery<br />

suffering fromheavy bombingbyAllied<br />

forces.<br />

Americanplanes dropped1400 tonnes<br />

of bombsonthe historicabbey, which was<br />

later rebuilt.<br />

He returned to Monte Cassinoto<br />

commemorate a70threunion of someof<br />

those whoserved in 2004.<br />

He visitedVeniceinthe laterstages of<br />

war.Restaurants werestillopen,and a<br />

few beersweredrunk, he says.<br />

“That’s where we finished(thewar).”<br />

Thereare sad memoriesalso,<br />

especially of those who “walkedthrough<br />

that door” and didn’t come backfromthe<br />

war.<br />

of Monck’s Spur, near Sumner,where<br />

there is aBurgess Streetnamed after<br />

Alan’s uncle, Charles Gordon Burgess.<br />

Thesedayshis mobilityissomewhat<br />

limited,giventhat his knees givehim<br />

trouble. Butheis still quick on his<br />

delivery when visitors pop in to see him.<br />

At his birthdaylast month,hekeptsome<br />

of the currentBlackCaps, who gavehim<br />

celebratory phone calls, ‘‘on therun’’with<br />

hisrepartee.<br />

Alan recalls someofthe well­known<br />

sports reporters,including Dick<br />

BrittendenofThePress,considered New<br />

Zealand’s most prominent cricket writer<br />

in the day,and Larry Saunders,from the<br />

ChristchurchStar.<br />

He loves achat and enjoysrugbyand<br />

keeping an eyeonCrusaders player<br />

EthanBlackadder, ason of hisgreat<br />

nephewTodd Blackadder.<br />
