Pet Cancer Leads to “One Medic<strong>in</strong>e”<br />

Like humans, dogs <strong>and</strong> cats develop spontaneous cancers.<br />
The similarities lend to “one medic<strong>in</strong>e” where novel therapies<br />
developed for companion animals may prove helpful to humans,<br />
<strong>and</strong> vice versa. Here, veter<strong>in</strong>arians at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wiscons<strong>in</strong>-<br />
Madison School <strong>of</strong> Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Medic<strong>in</strong>e exam<strong>in</strong>e a Boxer with<br />
non-Hodgk<strong>in</strong>’s lymphoma, a cat with squamous cell carc<strong>in</strong>oma,<br />
<strong>and</strong> aspirate bone marrow to diagnose cancer.<br />
Cancer is common <strong>in</strong> companion animals. Fully a quarter<br />
(25 percent) <strong>of</strong> the approximately 18,000 cases seen annually at<br />
the School <strong>of</strong> Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Medic<strong>in</strong>e are cancer-related. Nearly half<br />
<strong>of</strong> the patients seen by the school’s well-equipped Cancer Service<br />
are enrolled <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials seek<strong>in</strong>g new <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative cancer<br />
therapies.<br />
