Dr. Maoquan Zhou, a postdoctoral fellow <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jon<br />
Thorson’s lab at the UW-Madison School <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy, is<br />
exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a vial with the anticancer drug mitoxantrone. He<br />
is develop<strong>in</strong>g novel chemistries to direct known anticancer<br />
drugs (such as mitoxantrone) to specific tumors via<br />
attach<strong>in</strong>g sugars.<br />

Elizabeth Stower, 22 from Amery, Wiscons<strong>in</strong> receives<br />
radiation therapy for breast cancer. Elizabeth, a UW-<br />
Madison college senior major<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> political science<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational studies, admits 2008 was a tough<br />
year. Her mother died <strong>of</strong> ovarian cancer, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> March,<br />
Elizabeth discovered a lump <strong>in</strong> her own breast.<br />

Carolyn Foster laughs at a joke while be<strong>in</strong>g treated with<br />
chemotherapy. Diagnosed with breast cancer <strong>in</strong> 1996,<br />
Carolyn’s cancer recurred <strong>in</strong> 2003. At the <strong>time</strong>, her life<br />
expectancy was only four years. More than five years<br />
later, Carolyn acknowledges “ownership <strong>of</strong> her treatment”<br />
<strong>and</strong> says she enjoys everyone at the UW because they<br />
“all take a personal <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> me.” She is already mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
camp<strong>in</strong>g plans for this summer.
