Mrs. Gruwell tries to borrow books for the children, but the<br />

librarian says she will not get it back. Or she suspects that she<br />

gets the books broken again or paint the students purely. Mrs.<br />

Gruwell also says students can compare with Anne Frank.<br />

Mrs. Gruwell plays a line game with the kids. She asks the<br />

children to ask and they have to go to the line if they answer yes<br />

and stop if they want to answer no. Each of the students is lost<br />

to at least one friend by the gang war. Mrs. Gruwell brought<br />

books to the students. She wants students to write something in<br />

every day. You can write about the past, the present or the<br />

future. You can also write song lyrics or poems. They should lead<br />

it like a diary. If Mrs. Gruwell is allowed to read the notebooks,<br />

the students should place the notebooks in a closet, if they are<br />

not allowed to read it, then the students should take the<br />

notebooks with them. The closet is unlocked each lesson and<br />

completed at the end of the lesson.<br />

At the rst she was happy when she was in front of the class, but<br />

when the students came in and didn't listen to them, she was<br />

Mrs. Gruwell reads the children's notebooks. There were a few<br />

notebooks in the closet, but not all. A girl in the class writes that<br />

her mother was brought out of the house before her eyes and<br />

she was beaten to death. She herself was beaten and she says<br />

she still feels it. Marcus wrote that he was sitting on a bench<br />

with a friend. This friend showed him a gun and he was shot.<br />

Marcus sat next to him until the police arrived. His friend lay<br />

next to him as a corpse and Marcus went to jail. She has read<br />

several other books and all have a cruel story.<br />

Ms. Gruwell went out to dinner with her dad and told me about<br />

the notebooks. She tries to convince the headmaster that she<br />

can take a trip with the students at the weekend. She wants to<br />

show the students the world behind the place of residence. She<br />

wants to give this excursion as a reward for good work and<br />

grades. At rst she does not get the permission, but the next<br />

morning he says yes.<br />

Part 6<br />

Ms. Gruwell wanted the students to take a glass and say<br />

something. A few students have done it and they have become<br />

more self-con dent and believe more in themselves. There was a<br />

boy coming forward who wanted to read from his diary. The<br />

students wondered who that is and they don't even know the<br />

name. He wrote that he is homeless and he has no more.<br />

Nevertheless, he goes to school and since Ms. Gruwell is there,<br />

everything is better for him. Meanwhile, he feels at home in<br />

school. He wears old hair and thus he feels uncomfortable.<br />

5. Who is a character you like or relate to the most so far? Why?<br />

How so?<br />

I like Eva the most because she is a strong person.<br />

6. What are ways Ms. G tried to engage (make them interested)<br />

the students?<br />

She plays a line game with the students and gives them<br />

notebooks as a "diary".<br />

7. What are some reasons the students do not respect Ms. G at<br />

rst? What do they say to her when she confronts them? Maybe<br />

they didn't learn otherwise.<br />

8. Why does Eva "hate the white people"?<br />

She means that the white people have more rights and they are<br />

allowed everything. She also thinks that white people can do<br />

whatever they want.<br />

9. Describe Ms. G husband. What is his attitude towards her<br />

teaching career?<br />

A girl from the advanced course wants to switch to Ms. Gruwell.<br />

Her husband is offended and says she can't teach the student<br />

because the level is too high. In the end, he still apologizes to<br />

her.<br />

The students read the book of Anne Frank and Eva goes to Mrs.<br />

Gruwell and asks her things about the book, but she should<br />

continue to read. Eva does not want Anne Frank to die because<br />

that doesn't t the book and Marcus says she isn't death to him.<br />

He also says that Anne Frank understands the situation of the<br />

students. Ms. Gruwell wants students to write a letter to Miep<br />

Gies, what they think of the book, and explain their situation.<br />

Marcus absolutely wants to accompany her purely. The students<br />

want Miep Gies to come to them, so they do a "Taste for Change"<br />

event and collect donations, Ms. Gruwell sent the letters to<br />

Amsterdam, and Miep Gies came to Longbeach, and then<br />

Marcus was allowed to accompany them purely Telling the<br />

students that she tried to bribe jewellery to bribe the soldiers,<br />

any of the Jews kept hidden was shot or sent to a concentration<br />

camp, she was held a gun to her head, Marcus says she is a hero,
